The quality of the film is evidenced by the fact that it is essentially a student work (although completed to a full-length film with the money of investors). Therefore, it is very important to underestimate your expectations before viewing, otherwise it will be completely painful. No matter how good a director you become in the future, if you have a budget of $60K and mid-1970s technology, you’re not going to make a second Space Odyssey. However, Carpenter’s task was rather different – to ridicule the cliches of fantastic cinema that existed at that time. With such an introduction, only a strong script could save the film. But... it turned out not at all witty, not funny, but very, very boring. I never got over it. Sometimes it's just some ridiculous buffoonery (like Mr. Bean in space). Plus, the demonstrably terrible animatronics of an alien pet finished off; it was seen that this was done to kind of sneer: “Look, in our film the alien depicts a spotted balloon with paws!” Why aren't you laughing?
