"Over the Rainbow", often referred to as "Somewhere over the Rainbow", is a classic ballad song to music by Harold Arlen and lyrics by Edgar Harburg. Written specifically for the 1939 musical The Wizard of Oz, the song was performed by Judy Garland and became her "calling card." The song was awarded an Oscar in the nomination "Best Song for a Film". In June 2004, the American Film Institute published a list of the 100 best songs for films, in which "Over the Rainbow" took first place. The American Recording Association and the National Endowment for the Arts also placed the song at the top of their list of Centennial Songs. The song acquired the status of a gay anthem (it is clear that because of the rainbow - a symbol of the gay movement). "Over the Rainbow" has been sung by other artists countless times.
