I love Terry Gilliam’s films, although it would seem that he often shoots in a genre that I am not particularly fond of – fantastic, so I watched a lot of his films. But somehow all the time out of my sight fell quite a famous film “12 monkeys” / Twelve Monkeys, 1995, which he shot on the basis of the short film Chris Marker “Runway”, 1962. I watched it and the film was very interesting. In the utopian world of 2030, humanity has almost all died out due to some virus, the epidemic of which began in 1996, there are only 1% of the population living underground, and there are no people on the surface, only wild animals walk freely there. A handful of scientists try to figure out how this terrible epidemic started and send a volunteer to find out in order to try to stop the process. This time it's the prisoner James Cole (Bruce Willis), if he's lucky, he could be pardoned. But the first time there is a mistake and he falls into 1990, where he is, of course, declared insane and sent to a mental hospital, where he meets a young psychiatrist Katherine Reilly (Madeline Stowe), who, of course, does not believe in his story, as well as a young psychotic Jeffrey Koins (Brad Pitt). But those who sent him follow him and bring him back, and the matter does not end there, and a second and third attempt is made, in which he continues to contact Katherine. In the end, it turns out who actually carried this virus around the world, and it is not an army of young psychotic 12 Monkeys, but we will never know if we can stop it this time. The action takes place in the past, then in the future, the main character sometimes begins to doubt whether what is happening is his fantasy, he enjoys life in this past, which appears in his memory only in the form of childhood memories, but most likely not. Currently, the film on this topic looks quite relevant and does not inspire much optimism.
