The film is 40 years old and lasts 2 hours and 42 minutes.
The film is based on Shakespeare's tragedy "King Lear". But here Grand Duke Hidetora distributes his possessions to three sons. The youngest son does not support the father’s decision and predicts disastrous consequences for the family. And then everything goes according to Shakespeare, but with Japanese flavor and specificity.
I did not like these “freedoms”. Overall, I didn't like the film. Also, because of the names that you only know who they belong to by the end of the movie.
The battle scenes are luxurious, but if it were not for the flags on the backs of the soldiers, it was hardly possible to understand who was fighting with whom, i.e. to which the son belonged military units. Moreover, they move in a chaotic order with endless repetitions of frames, and you do not always immediately understand who is attacking whom.
For those of you who don’t know Shakespeare’s masterpiece, I think you’ll love it.
