I have not read the original book, but it quickly becomes clear how the picture in such a promising setting failed miserably.
The advent of chaos lures with a promising description. It is interesting to see how noise visualization is implemented and what the male population of the new colony is doing about it. However, it quickly becomes clear that it does nothing. As with their lives in principle.
The noise was leaked - only in a couple of cases it is somehow interesting to use, all the rest of the time it is just an excuse to squander the insanity of the inhabitants of the colony. Although, to be surprised, the colonists here, obviously, were not the most progressive part of the human race.
In just a generation and a half, they managed to blow all the technical achievements of their ancestors and roll back to the technologies of the Wild West, along the way overgrown with semi-religious cults and the Amish worldview. It is strange that at all managed to build supports for the monorail, which now rot in the woods.
Prentisstown is generally the quintessence of warring ignorance. It seems that the neighbors should be smarter, but they are not far away. Although there are sages on their home planet, they sent a second wave of colonization to a planet with which the first wave, it seems, never came out.
All these plot features (holes) do not leave any chance of serious perception of what is happening on the screen, which is doubly sad because of the budget of the film and excellent acting.
Only one can admire the views and marvel at the skill of the actors who manage to convincingly play in this circus.
The ending is completely crumpled and fused. Apparently, there was hope for a sequel, although most of this film is already superfluous. Just watch the first half an hour to get acquainted with the mechanics of noise, and you can safely wrap.
