Another film that received wide popularity last year and deserved very high critical acclaim is the film called “My Sun” in the Russian box office, which sounds somewhat more high-pitched than the original title “Aftersun”, 2022. The film is the debut feature-length film by Scottish director and screenwriter Charlotte Wells, who described it as emotionally autobiographical. The plot is simple - father Calum Paterson (Paul Mescal), amicably separated from his former wife and, as we understand, left Scotland (as he tells his daughter, because there is too little sun), goes on a rather short vacation in Turkey with his daughter Sophie (Frankie Corio). The girl is 11 years old, her father is about to turn 31. We see that they love each other, the girl is very curious to learn something about her father, even about what he dreamed of at her age. The father, apparently, there is some mental discord, the reasons, probably not one, here and the instability in his personal life, and financial problems, he tries to work on himself, we see books on meditation and work on himself, and the fact that he is engaged in tai chi, his state he tries to hide from his daughter, trying to organize her a full rest, but still once breaks down. What we are seeing is essentially the memories of a now-grown daughter watching videos she and her father were filming. We don’t know, maybe it was her last meeting with her father, we don’t know how the fate of the heroes developed, but these memories are deeply embedded in Sophie’s memory. I would not look for a special depth in the film, this is such a sketch from life, this kind of memories from childhood and youth will be found in each of us, but it was filmed well, the actors, and there are almost two of them, play really well, so I watched not without interest.
