Bryan Singer in 1998, long before the X-Men and Operation Valkyrie, became interested in what it felt like to be in the position of a person endowed with some privileges before the rest of the world. He can command others, as Todd masterfully does, or burn others in gas chambers and escape punishment, or possess anomalous abilities, like "X-men." In each case, the gift leaves a terrible scar in the soul of its owner. Moreover, Brad Renfro, who played a boy, after the film went into all seriousness and as a result died of a heroin overdose. Probably the role of the book by Stephen King left an imprint on his life.
