The merits of the film are noticeable against the background of its continuation. Quality music, interesting characters and a completely unexpected twist with the military - that's what I appreciated. And if a set of charismatic characters is sort of the standard for zombie movies, then the rest really made this movie stand out. The idea expressed by the military at the table - crowds of people kill each other, so everything goes as always. This is a really interesting observation. We are not dealing with just a horror movie, it is to some extent a reflection of the depression of humanity, fears of antisociality, viruses, the collapse of society. Now, 11 years after the release of the film, we see many things around us, similar to what is shown, but naturally in a less explicit way. All these national hysteria, constant mythical pig, chicken, beaver wheezing, terrorist acts ordered by the authorities in their own countries, a fake war in Ossetia, massacres in embassies because of the film “Innocence of Muslims”... To all this put the paws of various “residences of evil”, and zombies snatch from the screens, and then kill each other. And if you read about how the film was made, it is clear that the authors knew what they were shooting. The problem was visible even then. Although, of course, the horror film remains a horror film and one should not expect a full and explicit disclosure of this topic from it. It's a primal action game after all. But he succeeded. I can't say that about the totally useless sequel to 28 Weeks Later.
