"Witch Delivery Service" is somewhere in the middle of his creative career. Before that, there were both successful and unsuccessful films. From his most unsuccessful project, in my opinion, Nausicaa of the Valley of Winds, to one of his mini masterpieces, My Neighbor Totoro. There were also masterpieces like Princess Mononoke after it, but I didn’t notice any bad movies there. This film, light adventure genre, sometimes comedy. In the story, the young witch Kiki at the age of 13 must live a certain time among people. Kiki, along with her cat Gigi, goes to the city, where she meets a kind baker who helps her start her own business - Emergency Delivery Service. There is nothing special, as in the film itself. It’s not those melodramatic parables like Gone With Ghosts or The Walking Castle, it’s just a light, entertaining movie. But I personally liked it, although it doesn’t make much sense.
Miyazaki likes to make masterpieces out of nothing. The same “My Neighbor Totoro”, well, there is nothing, a primitive plot, but in fact everything turns out to be like that. It's not in this movie, although I've been waiting a long time. It would be foolish to call this film experimental for this master, because before that there was a film of a similar genre “Heavenly Castle of Laputa”, but in that film everything was done more qualitatively.
In this film, as in many other Miyazaki films, he creates a clean, flawless world where all people are like saints, and in this case the negative characters are animals. I think he's doing all this to show that even in our brutal reality, there's room for all the good things on earth. All this is embodied in this film, in a city without a name, which is also very important, which shows that kindness is everywhere, and after all the films about Ultronassil, such as Clockwork Orange and many others, you always want to plunge into the world of Miyazaki, for which I thank him very much.
