On creators and geniuses The film
Dunkirk can be appreciated only for the fact that it finally allows you to understand which of the Nolanov brothers is a smart creator, and who is just a talented artisan.
Everyone is used to the fact that in the paintings of Christopher Nolan we are always amazed by incredible concepts and amazing ideas. People are fascinated by the stunningly simulated black hole with cabinets inside, the spectacularly curved tragically dead actor, the car falling in the rapid from the bridge and the wonderful tricks performed by Hugh Jackman. Wow, that's masterpiece. That’s the first emotion of everyone watching Nolan’s movies, and that’s usually the only impression. Few people bother to think that behind beautiful ideas and images hide banal stories and clumsyly presented stupid message about the all-saving power of love.
Dunkirk is Chris Nolan’s first film in years that was not made by his brother Jonathan. As you know, it was his brother who was always responsible for the scripts in his works, and the elder Nolan directed the production. Dunkirk, for Christopher, seems to be a deeply personal project: because it is strikingly different from his previous works, and therefore, probably, his brother did not participate in the creation of the script.
And so now we can point out that without Jonathan, the elder Nolan is not very much. Judge for yourself: Dunkirk turned out to be absolutely uninteresting and detached near-war film, in which there is not a single interesting character with at least the rudiments of character, and not a single impressive idea. Of course, Christopher had the right, after so many pretentious epics, to make a chamber movie without breathtaking concepts. This is exactly what intrigued Dunkirk: will Nolan be able to make a regular movie, without all this visual tinsel? But the director decided to add to the picture, sorry, 'nolanovshchina' (I will not patent the word, use). The script of the picture is deliberately overloaded with completely alien for such a story ' games with time ' All this nonlinearity and chaotic scenes added solely to the delighted cosmic book words fans of the Director, again vying to shout what a genius he is.
But he is, as we have seen, no genius. He is just a skillful not deprived of talent pop director, who spectacularly embodies on the screen the ingenious concepts of his brother. The next time someone shouts that Nolan is a genius & #39, ask them to specify which one. This word in our time, unfortunately, stuck to holes and fans of everything and all thoughtlessly call the genius of every third, and the god of every second. Jonathan Nolan isn’t a genius, but he’s certainly a very smart screenwriter who comes up with very extraordinary concepts. This is confirmed by 'Westworld' - a project in which the younger brother separated from the supervision of Chris and began to work independently. It’s not a perfect show (a naked woman, with impunity, arranging anarchy for several episodes in a well-guarded building – it’s wonderful of course), but Westworld is still the only series with a cunningly twisted script (although the rules of the game are constantly violated). But the older brother, Christopher, without his colleague could not deal with his ambitions and bombast.
