City of Bones I remember when this film was in theaters, I really wanted to go to it, but, scared of low ratings and negative reviews, I did not go. You did the right thing.
I'll start with the pros. Despite the pink snot climbing from all the crevices, the plot of the film is quite interesting. A teenage girl suddenly discovers that she is special, chosen, with superpowers and just the salvation of humanity, as a result of which a love triangle (or even a square) develops around her. The originality of this creation does not shine. Something similar could be seen in “Twilight”, “The Guest”, “The Hunger Games” and much more. I am not tired of this story, so this stamping did not affect my opinion of the film. In addition, the film pleased me with numerous fights and cute monsters, which distinguishes it from the same “Guest”, for example.
Another plus is special effects. They are now in every second film and this will not surprise anyone. "City of Bones" can not boast of unusualness or special spectacle of special effects - it's just a beautiful picture, which is pleasant to look at. Which is also good.
That's where the pros end. Then there are the downsides.
The first thing that catches the eye is the abundance of love triangles, tears, snot and other sentimental scenes designed for romantic teenage girls. Of course, the genre of melodrama obliges, and romantic girls can not be disappointed, but still there are too many of them here. From here comes the next minus - stretching. Two hours for melodrama, even with elements of fiction, is a lot.
The next downside is the main character. She doesn't look good. She is worn from stage to stage like a cotton doll, and she only slaps her eyes and builds a perplexed face. Maybe this is a minus in the work of the writers, maybe the actress could not express emotions clearly enough, but the main character, around which the plot is built, turned out to be almost the weakest point of the film.
However, the main, in my opinion, the minus is not the soap of the work, and not even the main character in the spirit of the “Twilight saga”. They're characters. There are no complaints about the main characters, except for their too clear division into bad and good. For a teenage film, that’s forgivable. And here are all the others. I haven’t read the book, and I can only judge it by the movie. And if you rely only on what is explained in the film, then often the behavior of secondary characters is striking in its illogicality. For the same reason, many events and phenomena mentioned here in passing and probably explained in the book remained a mystery to me, which also spoils the impression.
Overall, the movie went well. There is nothing unusual in it and I will hardly review it. But he left positive impressions. I will be waiting for the second part.
