He was born in Santiago de la Vegas, Cuba. During the Second World War he participated in the resistance movement, after the war he graduated from the University of Turin. Collaborated in the newspaper "Unita", from 1959 to 1966 was the editor-in-chief of the magazine "Il Menabo di letteratura". The first novel “The Path to the Spider’s Nest” was published in 1947. In the 50s, Calvino's fantastic novels, which brought him international fame, were published - "The Forked Viscount" (1952), "The Baron on the Tree" (1957) and "The Knight Who Was Not" (1959).
