Vasily Vasilyevich Katanyan was born on February 21, 1924 in Tbilisi. The son of the famous literary critic V.A. Katanyan; stepson Lily Brick. In 1950 he graduated from VGIK, where he studied on the same course with Eldar Ryazanov and where his teachers were G. Kozintsev and K. Khokhlov. Since 1950 he worked at the Central Documentary Film Studio. In 1954, together with E. Ryazanov, he filmed the documentary “Sakhalin Island”. Later he created a number of films dedicated to outstanding representatives of art and literature: Sergei Eisenstein (1958), Paul Robson (1959), Maya Plisetskaya (1964; 1982), Arkady Raikin (1967), Anna Pavlova (1987), etc. Among his friends were Sergei Parajanov and Yves Saint Laurent.
Honored Worker of Arts of Russia. Winner of the Lenin Prize. He is the author of “Touching Idols.” Already after the death of Vasily Katanyan in the publishing house "Vagrius" came the book "Clutch blanket", dedicated to people of art and composed of diary entries of the author, which he kept from childhood until the end of his life. His long-standing impressions are supplemented by later commentaries, forming a continuous account of people not only close to him, but who expressed the spirit of the era.
