Born in Rouen in the family of a wealthy merchant. Due to poor health, he studied mostly at home. In 1889 he decided to devote his life to literature, music and travel.
Gide's first publication was the novella The Diaries of Andre Walter (1891). In the same year, Gide met Stefan Mallarme and came under the influence of the symbolists, which is clearly felt in his poems of the time. In 1893-1894, he visited North Africa several times, where he met Oscar Wilde, who was traveling along the African coast.
The main book of Andre Gide is considered the novel "Fruits of the Earth" (1897) - it is curious that this novel gained popularity among the public only after the First World War. The Jew traveled a lot around the world, in 1936 he visited the USSR - and returned far from a rosy impression, disappointed with the Soviet system.
During the Second World War, he left France and moved to North Africa, where he wrote the allegorical story Theseus. In June 1947, Andre Gide was elected Honorary Doctor of Oxford University. In November of the same year, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for his contribution to literature.
