The famous French actor of theater and cinema Gerard Philipe (Gerard Philipe), who received stunning fame and popularity of the multinational film audience in the 50s of the twentieth century, was born in Cannes on December 4, 1922 in the family of a successful lawyer.
Young Gerard was prepared for the profession of his father, but his son became interested in the theater. After graduating from acting courses in 1942, Gerard Philip began his stage work at the Jean Vilar Theatre, and already in 1943 he made his debut in the film “Baby from the Embankment of Flowers”. In 1946, the film Idiot was released, in which J. Philip brilliantly played his first big role of Prince Myshkin. And although the film itself did not shine with high directorial creativity, but was only a mediocre adaptation of the novel by F. M. Dostoevsky, it brought the actor first fame and popularity among the French public.
The Soviet audience learned and sincerely fell in love with Gerard Philip in Christian Jacques’ stunning film Fanfan-Tulip. The actor made his hero impulsive, intelligent, gallant and ironic, giving him French lightness and charm. This film brought the actor worldwide fame. Later, with Christan Jacques, the actor still met on the set of “Parma Monastery”. In total, during his incomplete 37 years, Gerard Philip performed more than 20 roles in cinema and played 18 roles in the theater. Gerard Philip was able to play the heroes of Stendhal, Musset and Cornell so vividly that the best Julien Sorel, Sid and Lorenzaccio French audience will have to wait for a very long time.
Gerard Philippe was the most expensive artist in France (for the film he received a million old francs), but refused to act in Hollywood. He hated journalists, indifferent to women and novels on the set. And only Nicole Fourcade (Anne Philip) became his favorite woman, wife and mother of his children, a faithful assistant in acting.
For many years, Gerard Philip headed the Union of French Actors and led a great public work. The great French actor died of cancer on November 25, 1959 in Paris, just a few days before his 37th birthday. Every year on the French Côte d'Azur, in Ramathuel, a theatrical festival of his memory is held. /
