Krzysztof Penderecki is an outstanding Polish composer and conductor, author of large forms, as well as music for cinema, for the composition of which he was twice nominated for an Emmy Award, and also won the prize of the Polish Film Academy (for the drama Katyn).
The composer, born on November 23, 1933 in the family of a lawyer, joined music in childhood, studying the violin and piano. He studied at the Academy of Music in Krakow, graduating in 1958 and then teaching there.
For the first time he made himself known by winning the Composers Competition in 1959, later he gained a reputation as an avant-garde composer, often representing Poland at international festivals. Over time, the composer grew into a major figure, a master recognized as one of the largest not only in Poland, but also among the world's modern masters of music. He owns four operas, eight symphonies and other orchestral pieces, many instrumental concertos, choral works mainly on religious texts, chamber and instrumental works, as well as music for cinema, including the drama of Alexander Sokurov.
