Italian director and screenwriter Dino Risi worked as a psychiatrist before he got into the film business. In the early 40s he was an assistant director, and towards the end of the Second World War he found himself in Switzerland, where he studied the basics of the profession under Jacques Fader. Returning to Italy, Dino began with documentary shorts and by the early 50s completely abandoned psychiatry to seriously engage in directing.
