Born in Ferradas, he grew up on a cocoa plantation. He studied at a Jesuit college in El Salvador, then studied law at the University of Rio de Janeiro. He published his first novel at the age of 20. In 1930, he began working as a journalist and at the same time became involved in politics and joined the Communists, the result of which was the election of Amadou to the Brazilian Parliament in 1946.
