Chapaev .
Gavriil Nikolaevich was born on September 12, 1904 in Novocherkassk. After studying in 1917-1922 at the Don Conservatory, he continued his education in Leningrad, where he took skills lessons from leading teachers of that time.
Popov’s early writings immediately demonstrated his extraordinary composing talent, but in the future, wanting to get away from the popular accusations of formalism at the time, he began to write works that the Soviet government needed, odes about the Soviet way of life and the communist hero. Among these works are his symphony No. 4 with the subtitle “Honor of the Motherland” and a cantata poem called “Honor of our Party”. Despite this, the list of his works there are several that testify to the almost unclaimed creative talent of the maestro. He also wrote music for several dozen films, where, in addition to Chapaev, Sergei Eisenstein’s short film Bezhin Meadow, the war film She Defends the Motherland, the melodrama Unfinished Tale and the magical story stand out.
"The Tale of King Saltan" .
The composer died on February 17, 1972.
