Joseph D. Pistone is a former FBI agent who worked undercover for six years. His goal was to expose the Bonanno Mafia family and the Colombo clan, two of the five major crime families that control New York City. Joseph later wrote a book about his work, which was the basis of the biographical tape.
"Donnie Brasco" , where the main role, an undercover detective, was played by Johnny Depp, and his opponent Benny Ruggero – Al Pacino.
The future special agent was born in 1939. He studied anthropology at William Paterson University, graduating in 1965 and enrolled in the FBI in 1969.
Donnie Brasco was an undercover pseudonym for Pistone while working in a mafia family. For this operation, he was chosen because of his Sicilian origin, good knowledge of the Italian language, as well as sufficient acquaintance with street gangs from childhood and youth. It was assumed that the task he will have to perform, will take about six months, but it lasted for six years.
Under the guise of a petty jewel thief, Pistone won the trust of a number of high-ranking mafia figures, and when the operation was completed, the result was about 100 convictions handed down across the US. The mafia announced a bounty for Pistone, who was forced to continue to hide his location and live under fictitious names.
