Alex De La Iglesia is a Spanish independent filmmaker from Bilbao. Alex studied at the University of Deusto, in his youth was fond of comics, for a certain time worked on television, then became a production artist for the short film “Mama” directed by Pablo Berger. In 1991, De La Iglesia took part in the creation of the crime thriller Anything for Bread.
In the same year, he directed the short film Mirindas Asesinas. The hero of the picture was a bored man who became a killer maniac out of boredom.

In the same year, he directed the short film Mirindas Asesinas. The hero of the picture was a bored man who became a killer maniac out of boredom. A close friend and regular co-author of Alex was Jorge Gerrickahevarria, who later participated in the writing of scripts for each director's film.
In 1993, the director made a real breakthrough – the producer of his first feature film “Operation Mutants” was Pedro Almadovar. The film was an incredible success and collected many awards at international festivals, as well as won three Goya awards. No less successful was the comedy horror film “Day of the Beast”, which received six national awards, including “Goya” for best director. In this film, Alex also starred himself.
In 1999, the black comedy Laughter of the Dead was released in Spanish, well received by the audience and nominated for three Goya awards, winning two of them. In 2000, the crime film Kommunalka was released, which received fifteen nominations for the national film award.
In 2002, De La Iglesia made a picture.
