In 1993, upon graduation, Richard won a grant to study at the University of California and in 1997 graduated from the director's faculty at the University School of Film and Television. While still at university, Richard tries himself as a screenwriter and director and makes two short films.
In general, Richard was pushed to cinematic art by watching the comedy Brazil directed by Terry Gilliam. As Richard Kelly later admitted, it was Terry who was grateful for his training in detailing the shot so that each individual frame of the film could become a beautiful and wonderful photograph.
