Rustam Khamdamov was born on May 24, 1944 in Tashkent. After school, he entered VGIK at the directorial faculty of the studio of Grigory Naumovich Chukhray. While still studying in the third year, he made the film “In the mountains my heart”, which shocked even the masters of the film world and was included in the list of the best films of our cinema. He received all the awards at the internal festival of VGIK. It was in this film that the talented Elena Nightingale first appeared on the screen. Alas, the film did not survive and was not at the box office.
In 1968, Khamdamov as a costume designer worked with A.S. Konchalovsky on the set of the film “Noble Nest”. From 1972 to 1974, Rustam shot his first full-length film - "Unexpected Joy", which starred Elena Solovey, Natalia Leble, Oleg Yankovsky, Tatiana Samoilova. But this film suffered the same fate as the first film. Censorship banned the show, and the picture sunk into oblivion.
For 15 years, Khamdamov did not shoot anything, doing a completely different job - he designed performances, sketched costumes for the theater, ballet and Western high fashion houses, drew posters and secretly worked in the cinema.
In 1991, Rustam Khamdamov’s third full-length film Anna Karamazoff had an almost detective story. The film participated in the competition in Cannes and caused a storm of enthusiasm. But he did not receive official awards, and his French producer refused to return the picture to Russia.
In 1992, Khamdamov received a grant from Jacques Chirac - until 1995, the artist lived in Paris, where he secretly worked for Milanese and New York, as well as French haute couture houses. Eight years later, Rustam’s works were officially accepted into the modern collection of the Hermitage – this happened for the first time in the history of Russian culture. The works of Khamdamov can also be seen in the National Gallery of Rovenna (Italy), in the Zimmerli Museum of Rutgers University (USA), the collections of the State Tretyakov Gallery.
In 2005, Rustam Khamdamov released a film.
