Director, screenwriter, producer and actor Gavin Hood was born on May 12, 1963 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Growing up in a theater family, he nevertheless graduated from the law faculty of the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa’s leading educational institution. But the creative family roots took their toll. While practicing law, Gavin Hood faced a criminal case that developed in his head as an entertaining screen story.
In 1991, he left law and went to Los Angeles to study screenwriting at the University of California. The first feature-length film, where Hood is both a writer and a director, was the thriller The Intelligent Man (1999). While still at university, he received an award for this screenplay from the jury, which was attended by Steven Spielberg, Michael Douglas and famous producer Kathleen Kennedy.
Widely known Gavin Hood received after the release of the Oscar-winning
film "Tsotsi" . This is a film about the inner struggle between cruelty and feelings of love, compassion and mercy of the leader of street bandits from the suburbs, the native director of Johannesburg. In 2005, the film won the Audience Award at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Subsequently, Hood directed the films Version (2007) and X-Men. Start. Wolverine (2009).
Gavin Hood is married to actress Janine Ether and shares his life between London and Johannesburg.
