Born 2.3.1943 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin (USA). In early childhood, he was hit by a car and for some time was on the verge of death; the horror of the experience haunts Straub to this day, appearing to him in nightmares. This event is perhaps the main reason that prompted Straub-writer to turn to horror. In 1965 he graduated from the University of Wisconsin, in 1966 – Columbia University, having received a master’s degree in English literature in both educational institutions. He taught at school for three years, and in 1969 he and his wife left for Ireland to prepare for their doctoral thesis. It was there, in Ireland, that Peter Straub's first novel "Marriages" (1973) was written. Straub moved to London in 1972 and returned to America seven years later. The dissertation was forgotten, and Straub devoted himself entirely to a writing career. She now lives in New York. Peter Straub is a member of the Pen Club and the Horror Writers Association (HWA). His hobbies are jazz, opera and classical music.
