Joanne Harris was born on July 3, 1964 in Yorkshire, UK, to a French mother and an English father. She was educated in Cambridge, where she studied modern and medieval languages at St. Catharine’s College. After graduation, Joanne worked as a salesman, then 12 years taught French at the school for boys Leeds, taught French literature at the University of Sheffield. The first novel by Joanne Harris, The Evil Seed, was published in 1989, but, like the second, Sleep, Pale Sister, had little success.

He was shortlisted for the prestigious Whitbread Awards, and the rights to his film adaptation were bought in Hollywood. Thanks to the success of the film of the same name, directed by Lasse Hallstrom, and the main role was played by Juliette Binoche, the novel gained even more popularity in the world.
