Journalist.
Vladimir Yakovlevich Motyl says: I was not interested in shooting a purely detective picture, this genre did not attract me. The script, of course, was good. But it was necessary to find a highlight, which was the love of the experienced Red Army soldier Sukhov to a simple Russian woman. I saw Katerina Matveevna as a Kustodiev type woman. It was supposed to be in the body, the dream of a soldier starving for the flesh. . . ?
Despite the fact that Sukhov’s wife is not the main character, the performer was selected for this role with special care. In search of the heroine, the authors of the film had to travel a lot to the cities and villages of the USSR. Until one day Vladimir Motyl ran into journalist Galina Luchai. The spiritual face and mysterious smile of this young woman conquered the director, and from that moment on another wife for the Red Army soldier Sukhov could not be considered.
However, the figure of Galina Lucai was significantly different from the planned Kustodiev type. And if the shoulders and thighs could be compacted with the help of special linings, then this cannot be done with the legs, and in the opinion of the director, full legs should correspond to full hips. It was decided to shoot Katerina Matveevna in parts, or rather to remove the legs separately. I had to pick up a couple of thick but beautiful legs. This task was assigned to the director’s assistant Nikolai Konyushev, who, walking around St. Petersburg, looked not at the faces of the ladies he met, but at their “travel” part. The owners of suitable legs, he offered to star in the movies. Many ladies, learning that to shoot in the movie will be “from the belt”, very rudely expressed in response, and one even “attempted” on the face of Nicholas.
