Born in Moscow in a merchant family. In 1898 he graduated from the Faculty of Law of Moscow University. He has been in print since 1895. The best pre-revolutionary works of Shmelev are characterized by a deep knowledge of urban life and the national language, attention to the “fairy tale”. These are the stories "Disintegration" (1907), "Citizen Ukleikin" (1908), "Man from the Restaurant" (1911). In 1922 Shmelev emigrated and went to Paris. In exile he published stories, pamphlets, novels; his best work of those years, of course, is the Summer of the Lord (1933).
