Mikhail Chekhov was born in Russia in St. Petersburg on August 29, 1891. He was the son of Natalia Alexandrovna Golden and Alexander Chekhov, brother of Anton Pavlovich Chekhov.

At the age of sixteen, the young man began to study at the theater school of the St. Petersburg Maly Theatre. His mentors were Boris Glagolin and Vladimir Sladkopevtsev. Five years later, he was enrolled in the branch office of the Moscow Art Theatre at the invitation of K. Stanislavsky. For several years of work in the troupe, he managed to establish himself as a very talented and diverse young actor. In 1921, Mikhail played the role of Khlestakov in Gogol’s comedy The Inspector, and his work was recognized as one of the best among those who created this image.
In 1922, Chekhov headed the First Studio, which two years later was transformed into the Moscow Art Theatre 2nd.
Circumstances forced him to emigrate to Germany. In 1930 he tried to create a theater in Czechoslovakia, but did not have enough funds, and had to move to Paris. Until 1939, Chekhov played on the stages of various European theaters, and then left for the United States, where he already remained until the end of his life.
In America, he organized his acting school, through which such stars as Clint Eastwood, Marilyn Monroe, Anthony Quinn, Yul Brynner and many others passed.
From time to time, Chekhov starred in films. Among his works are roles in such films as “A Song of Russia”, “The Ghost of the Rose Texas”, “Brooklyn and Heaven”, “From the Heart”. For his role in the film directed by A. Hitchcock “Bewitched” he was nominated as the best supporting actor for the Oscar.
In addition, he is the author of famous books "Character and Character", "Reflections on Don Quixote", "The Way of the Actor", "Letters to Viktor Gromov".
He died in Beverly Hills on October 1, 1955.
