She studied directing at the Munich School of Film and Television. During her studies she published film reviews in the daily newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung.
From 1973 to 75 she studied at the University of the Pacific (Stockton, California, USA) in the department of drama and at the New York “New School of Social Research”.
Doris Deury's first work as a film director was documentaries, melodramas and family films for TV (since 1976). Her picture Mitten ins Herz (translated as “Through the Heart”, 1983) won the audience prize and a special award at the national German film festival Max Ophüls Festival.
The popularity of Doris Deury brought the film “Men” (Männer, 1985), which won second place in the competition of the Guild of German arthouse cinemas and was a great success with the audience at the box office. "Men" is a film about the extraordinary decisions of middle-aged men in search of a new life, as well as the boundaries of friendship and love.
In 1989, Doris Deury founded her own production company Kobra Produktions GmbH with her husband Helge Weindler and Thomas Müller.
In 2001, Doris Deury made her stage debut with Mozart's "Così fan tutte" for the Berlin Opera.
In 2005, she staged Verdi’s opera Rigoletto at the Bavarian State Opera. The production of "Rigoletto" caused a negative reaction from critics.
In 2006, he again directed Mozart's "La finta giardiniera" as part of Mozart's week in Salzburg.
Doris Deury is the author of several best-selling novels: Was machen wir jetzt? (2000) and Das blaue Kleid (2002).
In 1999, Doris Deury's Am I Beautiful? (?Bin ich schön?, 1998) won the Best Screenplay Award at the Bavaria Film Awards. On the set of this picture in Spain died of meningitis husband Doris Deuri cameraman Helge Weindler. This picture consists of many episodes in which the minor characters of one scene become the main characters of the next. All heroes look for their happiness and pass by it, and when they are really happy, they do not realize it.
The film "Naked" (Nackt, 2002) participated in the competition program of the Venice Film Festival. (The film starred a young actress – Alexandra Maria Lara – “Control” (Anton Corbijn, 2007), “Youth without youth” (F.F. Copella, 2008)).
"Sakura Color" is a free remake of the film by the famous Japanese director Yasujiro Ozu "Tokyo Story", the picture that received the greatest fame among all his films. The film was about the relationship between old parents and adult children. There is no direct repetition of this plot in The Color of Sakura, but there are a lot of reminiscences, not to mention the fact that the second part of the film takes place in Tokyo, Japan. A trip to Japan for the protagonist Rudy, a cancer patient (even if he does not know about his deadly disease), turns out to be a way to learn more about the world and find peace and happiness.
"Sakura Color" (Kirschblüten - Hanami, 2008) participated in the IFF competition in Berlin, in the competition of the German Film Academy, in Valladolid (Spain). The Bavaria Film Academy (Bavarian Film Awards) awarded actor Elmar Wepper, who plays the main role, the award “Best Actor”. The German Film Awards also named Elmar Wepper “Best Actor” and awarded the film “Best Feature Film”. The film was recognized as "Best Film" at the international film festival in Seattle (USA).
Doris Deury is a member of the 1999 Cannes IFF jury.
