Screenwriter, are you serious? I expected intrigue from the film. And I saw a movie in which the characters really do not have motivation and in which the plot moves are possible only in a parody. And the main characters. The protagonists and antagonists are criminals. It is not clear why some are better. The negative protagonist must be ambiguous. (Robin Hood eventually takes from the rich and gives to the poor.) There's nothing like that here. The main character as a hero is unpleasant.
The second collaboration between Radford, Newman and director George Roy Hill.
The scam tells us about two Chicago scammers 30-ies of the last century, Johnny Hooker and Henry Gondorff. Their mutual friend was killed by a powerful mafia boss, and they decided to take revenge on an adventure for a huge amount of money. In the course of this case, Hooker will have to hide from a corrupt cop who wants to also have his share and run away from the murderers of the mafia boss.
The film was released a year after the Godfather and it is clear what the studio was aiming for, to repeat the box office success, but the picture still can not be called mafia It is more about scammers, scammers. It's more of a criminal adventure than a gangster movie. I’m pretty sure it was a sequel to Butch and Sundance for many people at the time, because of the same cast and director. The only funny difference in the first joint tape mustache wore Radford, here the same honor went to Newman.
One of the greatest strengths of the film is the script, the author has been collecting materials for almost a year and when he first presented it to Radford, he immediately approved it, but with one condition that a more experienced director is still needed. Because it's one thing to write a story, for a movie you have to be able to tell it. And that's how the script got to George Roy Hill. And it should be noted that his contribution is very strong in this picture. Starting with the idea of activity, and sketching before each act, this story reminded him of the time when the states produced comics with 5 pictures following from left to right. He also proposed the idea of using Ragtime as the basis of the soundtrack. Yes, in fact, he was a few years before the events of the tape, but first of all, you will learn about it only from facts on Wikipedia, or if you are a music historian. And secondly, the soundtrack is so organically inscribed in the tape that you can not even imagine the picture separately without it. The most funny fact is that the soundtrack is turned on only in moments when no one is talking on the screen, so it is so strongly imprinted in the memory of the viewer.
If in the last film there was a benefit of Newman and Radford, then here we have a great ensemble and secondary actors. Yes, of course, the main attention is stolen by 2 main characters and antagonist, but each of them is memorable and has even significant scenes.
The atmosphere is transmitted not only through music, but also the slang of those years, the environment of scammers in which the film takes place. Well, what to say about the scenery, almost everything was filmed in the pavilions, but transmitted with excellent reliability. The same can be said about the costumes, how good Newman is in the jacket, and it is impossible not to say about the detail. In the opening scene, you can see how people did not have enough money in that era and a simple passerby sticks out of his shoes newspaper, instead of filling holes.
As a result, the scam even now looks very easy and in one breath. I came across it for the first time purely by accident on TV, and only then I watched it completely from the very beginning. The film immediately captivates with its story, atmosphere and characters, yet the duo of Newman and Radford is extremely charismatic. And the tape laid the foundations of adventurous criminal comedies, because after it there was a more famous we Bluff with Celentano and its influence on the genre she hardly less than the Godfather on Gangster. A great movie that I recommend to everyone.
Chicago is a model of the criminal-glorious 1936. Here, two friends-shulers – Kelly and Shaw – who met after the death of their mutual black friend-mentor, decide to punish the common offender-mafia Doyle Lonnegan. Punish not with a banal robbery or even murder, but with a virtuoso scam. A plan with a lot of multi-movements, pitfalls and an unexpected impromptu. That’s just friends do not have the right to make a mistake, because people can afford to contact Doyle Lonnegan himself either very ignorant or very insolent.
In truth, to call "The Hustle" a milestone film is not what in the movies, but even in the 70s of New Hollywood can not. Yeah, stylish and witty. Also colorfully stylized for the era of gangsters and bootlegging. But still it is a film-robbery, which has already been filmed in the States and in Europe a wild number. Well, stylization for the past era in Hollywood came into vogue at the same time when color cinema became not a luxury, but a natural way of transmitting images. Moreover, the “Crazy” itself in the plot plan is very well overloaded. Not all the plans of the cheaters are caught from the knuckle, which, however, does not aggravate the general tone of the entertainment plot.
But thinking about the very unexpected success of this film in 1974, which won the main Oscar, it is worth noting the phenomenal luck of director George Roy Hill, who over the past decade managed to accustom the audience and critics to his very subtle sense of style. After all, Hill is not only the creator of the very overrated Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. He is also the author of such underrated productions as "Very Modern Millie" and "Adjustment Period", where Hill was the king of the atmosphere. And that's the atmosphere of "The Hustle" with its decouplingly cynical mise-en-scene, like the card confrontation of two incredibly insolent cheaters, and pushed this film to the very top. Although the same "Exorcist" in the 73rd in terms of phasing and influence on world cinema, left a much larger mark than "The Scam". And what is especially interesting, the competitors of the film academicians on the Golden Globe Hill's work nominated already in one nomination for best screenplay, as if hinting that this film is a typical one-day film. And in many ways, the “globusers” were right.
And yet “The Hustle” is a cool movie, in many ways the pace of which is set by a hot couple of friends Robert Redford and Paul Newman. Redford for the role of constantly running from trouble Kelly Hooker even received his first Oscar nomination. In terms of the time of his presence on the screen, Redford definitely had the main role in this film, but whether his performance pulled for the nomination is a controversial issue. As far as I'm concerned, Redford was nominated more in aggregate. The actor is already 37 years old, a lot of bright roles behind his shoulders, and “individual” has never been pulled up. Although Redford was pretty in the frame, so was his older friend Paul Newman, who solidly played card cheat Shaw Gondorff. It is also interesting that in the film there are no pretty and just young girls. Pure water Buddy Movi.
But if it was almost possible to do without women here, then without bright antagonists in no way. Especially when two sex symbols and Hollywood favorites play on the same side of the field. And in many ways, the film was successful thanks to the cool play of Robert Shaw, who played the mafia cheater Doyle Lonnegan. Shaw's game is not as noticeable as Redford and Newman, but it is thanks to her that the film recreates the entire intensity of the confrontation. And it's very strange that Robert wasn't nominated for an individual Oscar nomination for playing in the background.
Yes, and in the same film, we first meet the very colorful 50-year-old Charles Durning, who played a corrupt police lieutenant. Durning quite late began the professional play of the actor, but for the next two decades will be entrenched in cinema very tightly. And by the way, Durning is a real World War II hero. Military orders and medals, landings in Normandy, battles at the Ardennes... The guy was reviled before he dropped anchor in Hollywood.
I think it was the best film between the two parts of The Godfather. In Hollywood, there was a trend for cynical crime, and George Roy Hill just made this topic much easier, bringing everything to the level of funny showdowns.

I believe that connoisseurs of gangster tapes of the 30s - 50s will easily guess quotes from the already classic paintings. But such a brilliant stylization, where all the elements of the genre are not only observed, but also perfectly sustained, will hardly be remembered by any synephile.
If you add the name of the director - George Roy Hill, as well as the names of the main actors - Paul Newman and Robert Redford - who had already noted three years earlier in the stylish western of the same director Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, then it was easy to predict the success that fell to the lot of the creators.
The story is simple. Two small swindlers, what is called easily divorced the courier of the mafia, pulling 11 thousand green. Easy money went as easily as it came, and one of the heroes had to pay with his life. And for the sake of revenge to the boss of the mafia, on whose order the partner was killed, the young swindler goes to the apprenticeship to a large swindler who was on vacation until then.
As with every job, the main thing is calculation. And the calculation of the scammers that the mafia boss will buy with easy money turned out to be true, and the main thing in a large scam is the search for top-class cheating professionals. So, in fact, all films with such a plot are built. “Ocean’s Twelve Friends” (whether old or new) even has an accurate score of the participants in the scam. But as long as the client does not part with the money, nothing should resemble a failure. You can fail many times. Then on the heels of the swindler is a cop, then on his trail is a killer, then the mafia decides to check the cheating office. And in all cases, it is necessary to act quietly, without attracting unnecessary attention, so that a large fish does not jump out of the net, so deftly placed. The whole deception boils down to a simple thought: a thief stole a baton from a thief, but as you know, in the cinema, it is not what the picture is about, but how well it is made.
So excellent - with amazing acting, camera solutions, classic - a la 1930s - editing and dashingly twisted intrigue of films there are few.
To all fans of adventure and gangster cinema. As well as fans of Newman and Redford.
I watched it for the first time in 2018. Gradually, film after film, I get acquainted with the heritage of humanity in the part of the cinema of the twentieth century. In recent years, there is not much to watch in theaters, so attention is switching from what is now to what was. And then it was wow.
Everything is great in this movie, so I’ll start with the script. He's here. Yeah, you know, they used to write a script for a movie. It turns out that each character is a part of the story, inevitably woven into it. There is nothing superfluous, there is no fan service, here all the stories are part of the overall plot. And such that pull one and the plot will fall apart. Here are a few unexpected twists that surprise and give food to the mind. You sit there and think, and how did it happen, then add up all the terms and rejoice: "Wow, it was fun."
The story begins with the fact that small scammers steal from a random passerby, and then it turns out that they threw a large gangster on the money. However, such an uncomplicated beginning through certain rehearsals leads to a complex con scheme, heavy in execution and requiring remarkable skill from the heroes. And despite the two-hour duration, the viewing time flies absolutely imperceptibly. The movie has just begun, but it is over. How quickly and pleasantly time has passed!
The film is filled with unexpected twists that fire Chekhov's guns, and are not far-fetched fictions of the authors' sick imagination. When watching, you enjoy the details, while constantly following the general plot, the play of the main actors, interesting dialogues.
After such films, sometimes I do not want to go back to modernity, where there are almost no adequate screenwriters left, and from year to year we are shoved into our mouths a stamped conveyor from Mickey Mouse without a hint of common sense and at least some sense.
Chicki, 1936. Two street crooks Johnny Hooker and Luther Coleman accidentally rob a mob courier working for Doyle Lonnegan. Lonnengan's men kill Coleman, and Hooker enlists the help of Henry Gondorff, an extra-class con man. Together they play a masterfully planned performance, drawing a gambling gangster into a sweepstakes scam. The situation is complicated by the fact that Hooker is being hunted by the FBI and the police.
This crime retro comedy became a triumphant at the 1974 Oscars, receiving 7 statuettes, including for best film of the year. The picture became one of the most famous films about scammers and scammers and greatly influenced the genre. All this world of swindlers, adhering to a certain code of honor, ingenious multi-step scams are still found in various variations. Of course, “The Hustle” is not the first such film, but one of the most striking.
Director George Roy Hill again after “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” will use the brilliant duet of Paul Newman and Robert Redford. Charming and cunning fraudsters in their performance are real artists of their business. They also adhere to a code of ethics. Robert Shaw also played the role of gangster Lonnengan. The other actors are good here.
Beautifully recreated retro stylistics of the 1930s, light humor, the spirit of adventure, Newman and Redford in the lead roles, pleasant music (especially Scott Joplin’s rugtime The Entertainer arranged by Marvin Hamlish), dynamic plot, drawn screensavers, dividing the film into small chapters – all this together is a classic of the genre. Yes, the modern viewer picture will seem outdated in terms of shooting, and the plot moves seen in many other films. But it's one of those tapes that created all these stamps. The film has a 1983 sequel, but without Newman and Redford, it's very much so-so.

- Doyle, I swear I gave him four Cs. He turned the cards. Will you let him go so easily?
- What are you offering me? Should I tell him he's better than me?
I’ve heard about this movie for a long time, but I haven’t seen it before. Now is the time to catch up.
I will not write a synopsis from myself, because it is difficult to do without spoilers. So let me focus on the movie itself. Well, let's just say, not exactly what I expected to see. The film is a great representative of its genre, but something is clearly lacking in it. Technically speaking, the movie is still there. Which, by the way, is rare these days. I usually turn my nose at movies made over forty years ago, but there’s nothing to complain about. Everything was done perfectly.
It’s hard to judge actors because I don’t know any of them. I can mention the really good acting work of the main characters Paul Newman and Robert Redford. Really completely surrendered to their roles, constantly braking in front of the screen of the viewer, which from the monotony of the narrative gradually fades.
As everyone says, it has its time, and by 2017 it is hopelessly outdated. But that doesn't make him bad. Quite the opposite. It's not bad. If you haven’t seen it before, I don’t think you should watch it. I don't think I'd like it. Referring to the fact that the film is almost forty years old, I gave quite a high rating. Still, for 1973 it was done interestingly, qualitatively and originally. And the main thing is new (for those times).

I know a lot of people who judge movies by their novelty. If I am asked for advice on which film to watch, then the main criterion for choosing is not even the genre, but the year of release. Well, it is very important for many that the film was completely fresh, which just came out in the theater. And yet it has to be good. Personally, I believe that every year there are somewhere 10-15 quality films that deserve attention, but it takes time to watch them all, preferably at least a year. In this regard, it will be easier for me to recommend an old film, they can also include those that came out long before the arrival of the 90s. One day, a friend asked me to recommend a movie like Ocean's 11 Friends, and I called it "The Hustle." However, as soon as a friend heard that the film was 1973, he immediately fell into a stupor and flatly refused to watch it, because if you see it is very old, the fifth ten went after all. After this incident, he did not seek my advice again, although in my opinion he lost a lot. Dear friends, before rejecting this amazing film, it is better to think carefully again, because “The Hustle” is much cooler than even “Friends of Ocean”.
The action of the picture takes place in the 30s in Chicago. Johnny Hooker and Luther Coleman rob the courier of a powerful New York mobster. The hunt begins, after which Luther was killed. Desperate Hooker decides to avenge his friend, and turns to the famous scammer Henry Goldman for help. Joining forces, scammers develop an action plan and “play” the mafia for a large amount.
The film “The Hustle” has long been considered a classic of the genre, there are also opinions that the film shows the best scam in the history of cinema. In my opinion, these are not empty words. What makes this movie so special? First of all, the main characters. The role of Johnny Hooker was played by the well-known to this day Robert Redford, and the role of Henry Gondorff is no less famous Paul Newman. This famous acting duet shows an amazing game, in my opinion, it will be difficult for the viewer to choose the best of them. But what are the attractive characters? Redford's hero is a young and ambitious crook. He is an excellent "actor", for him it is not difficult to deceive someone and leave them in the fools. In my opinion, if Hooker were not a swindler, he would make a great businessman, engaged in buying and selling things. Hooker’s tongue is perfectly suspended, he can easily breed any person, and if he were a so-called “dumpster”, he could sell any thing in a tridorian and buy it for half the price. Throughout the film, we see how skillfully Hooker breeds his victim, enters into trust, makes you believe in fables. I watched all this action and could not help but smile, so great and beautiful work of the con artist. Unlike Hooker, Gondorf is an excellent organizer. Under his leadership, a huge amount of work was done, starting from drawing up a plan, and ending with the creation of a fake bookmaker. Gondorff is a real tactician and strategist, he is constantly one step ahead of his victim, knows all his moves in advance and does everything without undue suspicion. In addition, Gondorff is a crook, the poker scene is a direct confirmation of this. When he starts playing a simpleton, it seems that he is not an important player and it costs nothing to beat him. It is also very well traced his features of an excellent tactic: to mislead the enemy, to make it clear that it costs nothing to beat such a fool, and to strike at a time when no one expects a blow. Brilliant victory! Of course, such a duo will interest anyone. In addition, it is worth noting the amazing plot of the film. If you remember the aforementioned "Ocean's friends", then in the first place, there was no robbery in "The Scam". It was a real divorce that was worth a lot. From the very beginning, we can hardly predict the development of the plot. Every minute we get more and more into the center of events and we want to be deceived. And one day, that's what happens. We look at the screen and do not suspect that something has already happened that led us away from the truth. In short, the development of the plot and the ending you can hardly predict.
To sum up, I want to tell the audience to exclude the criterion of the year of release when choosing a film. Believe me, there are a lot of good old movies out there, and The Hustle is not alone. Well, if you want to have fun and enjoy the beauty of the prank, do not miss this film.
A criminal comedy about fraud and fraud. A film that gave direction to a new genre in cinema and gave direction to numerous imitations.
George Roy Hill is an American director. Young at Yale University, studied music, later during World War II participated in combat, / served in aviation /, fought in the Korean War. He began as a theater director, wrote plays himself, then in television and in cinema.
The film is set in America during the Great Depression in 1936. Chicago, two thieves, a young Johnny Hooker / Robert Redford / and an elderly Luther Coleman / Robert Earl Jones / thrown for money, (as if by accident) courier, mafia boss Doyle Lonnegan / Robert Shaw /. Further, Luther decides to retire from criminal activity and sends Johnny to learn the thief's craft to Henry Gondorff, Paul Newman.
And then, when Luther is killed by Lonnegan's men, Johnny and Henry devise a plan for cunning revenge, for two lemons of greenery. This is not an easy thing to do.
Which I would like to mention in the first place. This is the atmosphere, I would even say the romance of time, in which even if you did not live, for some reason believe that it was so. I don't know, maybe it's because I lived in the nineties, and it's natural to see life during our depression. Interesting times were, (almost like in this film), some were ready to hang themselves from lack of money, others did not know what to do with the money, / there were so many of them /, and exhausted from boredom.
It was also possible to encounter gangster “nobility”. I mean, in the film, the main characters are still bandits, but the bandits are positive. Can a gangster be a positive hero, initially? According to the law of the genre, it can. Under criminal law, we know that a bandit should be in prison.
Nevertheless, the characters of the film cause sympathy. However, we are taught from children's books to sympathize with noble robbers. I am sure that no one who reads this review has ever thought about it, how this robber can be noble. How can this nobility be manifested while violence is manifested? But I do not believe in gangster nobility, friendship, mutual assistance, sacrifice. Because I know that the law of thieves is nothing but the law of force, if you try to understand it impartially.
However, we are not talking about murderers, we are only about crooks, intellectuals, intellectuals of the criminal world, if such definitions are permissible in the criminal world.
Of course, this is all so, rhetorical issues, in the film they are not directly addressed. But, nevertheless, you cannot help thinking about these issues.
The film had a very good box office (more than 150 million, with an investment of 5 million), collected a large number of awards, which indicates that the viewer likes such films. Movies in which good guys with a carefree smile take money from bad guys. A person who mostly lives from paycheck to paycheck wants to imagine a parallel reality where you can cheat and still be a good guy.
Maybe that's why you live like this. All you hope is that either a good guy will solve your problems, or you, being a good guy, will solve something yourself. And then to spite fate, common sense, the whole world.
You will become rich and happy.
It doesn't happen. Fate cannot be deceived, there are no textbooks on which to learn this.
Henry, I need a little time and we're gonna nail this bastard.
- You don't learn anything.
- Come on. We just need a couple of days. Will I live that long?
- Maybe. Only a bullet can hit me.
There's an unremarkable basement in the middle of nowhere. A group of strangers dressed in long leather cloaks gathered there. Some of them are standing, others are sitting at a round table, where there is a deck of cards, as well as chips of various dignity. Most of those present have not taken off their hats and no, no, no, but throw wary, and sometimes even hostile glances at others. At the same time, each of those present hides a knife or even a gun behind the sinus, which does not prevent people present here from considering themselves gentlemen and worthy members of this completely rotten society. The bartender, who was hiding behind the counter, periodically pours whiskey and no-no, and looks at the mirror hanging above the bar counter, after which he shakes his head crushingly and reproaches himself for not removing the cursed mirror, because if it comes to a fight, then they will break, eruptives. Meanwhile, not far away than a block from here, several police cars and servants of the law stop, intercepting more conveniently guns and shotguns slowly approach the underground bar where the “gentlemen” have settled.
Oh, no, that's not the plot of this movie or even its prelude. That’s why I love Prohibition America movies, and maybe not just me. There were times when alcohol flowed, sometimes mixed with the blood of those who had recently drunk it. Where jazz could be heard on every corner and where people, despite all the adversity of life, tried to look to the future with hope and believed that maybe, only maybe, they would be able to find the very “American dream” that they heard as children. Doesn't that sound so attractive? So the hero of today’s history tries to live on a big foot, despite the fact that behind his soul he has no broken penny. Well, that's a scam.
Johnny Hooker is a man outside the system. He is young, talented, arrogant and charming, but he does not try to jump above his head and has no great goal either. Robert Redford's hero is just floating with the flow, trying to live each day as if it were his last. And even the fact that Johnny, along with his old friend Luther Coleman, cheated a simpleton in a business suit and became the lucky owners of eleven thousand dollars did not change anything in the long run. Johnny lost his money at the casino and didn’t even complain about it. Yeah, money. But they came, they left. Alas, the person to whom the stolen money was intended thought differently.
That same night, Luther Coleman is found dead. According to police, the poor man jumped out of the window. Johnny Hooker, despite the fact that he is a shirt-guy, understands that all this is not for nothing, but even if he does not understand this, then Lieutenant Snyder will clearly explain to a young man that he robbed a crime boss from Chicago, a certain Doyle Lonnegam, and such a person does not forgive offenses.
Is it time to expect Lieutenant Snyder to help the protagonist? Come on. This is America of the forties of the last century. What kind of help can you get from the police? Only a bullet in the head. Johnny doesn't need that kind of help. And so he escapes from both a police lieutenant and thugs who intend to turn the hero Robert Redford into a wacko. Fleeing to another town? Nope. And Johnny Hooker does not want to run from thugs all his life and shudder at the sight of his own shadow. Johnny Hooker is a player. Even if he is not lucky, he does not cease to be a player from this, and therefore he is looking for the legendary thief and fraudster Henry Gordof, who was an old friend of the late Luther Colman. He is only looking for revenge against the Chicago godfather, not with weapons, but thanks to cunning, cunning and dexterity of hands. Johnny Hooker paired with Henry Gordof decide to pull off such a scam, which will later make up legends. Of course, if they succeed and stay alive...
So here's a story with a dozen variables. In this film there are quite a large number of characters and each of them has a character, motive and ways to achieve the goal. The atmosphere of the film will heat up with every minute, which makes the viewer’s nerves resemble a strained string that is about to burst, but at the same time what is happening will be served in an easy, almost playful form. Life-affirming music will play, the main characters will show sincere smiles, supporting each other in difficult situations while not forgetting to exchange barbs. And this is really fascinating, why it is impossible to take your eyes off what is happening on the screen.
Although... and maybe it’s the scam itself, which is incredibly complex, but at the same time insanely simple, why does what is happening make you smile? Who knows. I will not go into the details of the scam, because this is the whole essence of the picture and it is much better if you see everything yourself. Well, those people who have already been lucky enough to see the “Frame” all know well without me.
As for the actors, everyone played their part perfectly. Paul Newman, who got the role of Henry Gordof, appeared before the viewer in an image memorable for Billiardist, and with him the Color of Money is a charming, wise and desperate player who knows his worth and never backslides. Everything has been said about Robert Redford, except that it is worth adding that he is a charming arrogant who is rude and releases caustic wits towards others, why the latter want to kill him. Nice kid, yeah. Well, the lame Doyle Longnegham performed by Robert Shaw gives the film a sharpness and a sense of danger. Yes, of course, he is not a particularly smart gangster, which at one time were Colombo “White Getras” (Only Girls In Jazz), Michael Carleone (The Godfather 2) or Al Capone (Any film with this character to choose from), but he compensates for this with the brutality that froze in his eyes.
Outcome? Fascinating, tense, but at the same time light film that can cause a smile on the lips. There is everything that the viewer loved films about America of the forties of the last century and even more. I can definitely recommend this film to everyone present. A good mood is guaranteed.
I have to admit that I rarely watch movies made before the 90s. I do not know what causes this feature of mine, but if I decide to look at something from the “old”, I always carefully weigh, choose and study possible applicants for such a retro viewing. And in the case of Scam, I didn't do any of the above. I just lazily flipped through the pages with recommendations on Kinopoisk and came across this work. And after seeing the names of Paul Newman and Robert Redford, I was surprisingly quick to pick the movie for the evening. I wanted to see the legendary duo firsthand.
And you know, I’m not going to be spraying around here about the plot, about some features, about a great acting job or a script that keeps you busy 40-plus years later. No, they've all said that many times before. I just want to bow deeply to the entire creative team that created this amazing movie. Not aging, not fading, not spoiling. Yes, some scenes are not as intriguing as they were 40 years ago. Yes, some plot twists do not make you frantically grumble and press your hand to your mouth with the words “How unexpected!”. Yes, in our time, the crazy action action movie scene chase in this film capture a little less. And despite all those many yeses, I ended up smiling so broadly that my cheeks hurt. For two hours I forgot about all the problems and troubles of my life. I just felt really good. Such sincere emotions cannot be bought or faked.
So if you want to forget about real life for two hours, plunged into the drive spirit of the 30s and the crazy lives of several scammers, then turn on the Scam. Life will be a little better.
I wish movies could be so sincere and free of charge to entertain.
I've seen this movie before. And even (oh, miracle!) managed to remember that "the chief will come at the last moment." But (and this, I think, is an even greater miracle) forgot when this moment will come, and who specifically will try on this glorious title.
So I sat down to see it for the first time. For little did my fragmentary memories differ from the well-known "introductory data": two "good" crooks "in an amazing and amusing way" must outsmart the third - of course, "bad."
Oh, yeah! I forgot to mention it. The very first and last time I saw this movie, “one of the most unexpected scams in the history of cinema,” really impressed me. You know, right? I completely forgot the details, but kept in mind the main thing: the feeling. A pleasant feeling of sincere pleasure from what he saw. This is important.
It is important because this time there was no such feeling. Despite the fact that even “in the course of the play” I still did not remember a single plot. I didn't remember, but I guessed. A lot. While, from my point of view, to unravel ahead of time some ingenious, allegedly, charade is all one thing that to reject it at the root. Considering that nothing other than an interesting ("three hundred years ago" - why not) plot, this film can not boast. He didn't impress me.
This is not the case with P. Newman. In his 50s, he looks great in this movie. This is his, not otherwise signature, look with a squint, coupled with an ironic smile! "Oh, my God, what a man!" in pure form. But that's not even the point. The way he plays! For me, so in the scene of the acquaintance of the main characters, P. Newman, at least, did not concede to R. Redford (nomination, however!), and how good he is in the episode with a card game on the train - and you can not convey - it is necessary to see.
What this film lacks is a worthy antagonist. The aforementioned “third crook” does not appear to be a smart person. "Angry as a dog" is yes. But only that.
And the final. I never understood the beauty of an unconditional victory, after which it is necessary to rush out the rods. What is the meaning of this?!
They're beautiful. All!! That is, the entire crew.
What costumes, what a game of actors, the plot. Young, beautiful and running fast. I watched this movie for the first time at the beginning of the VCR. Made a lasting impression. One of my favorites. I couldn't help but write a couple of nice things about him.
It's not a simpleton, but a hardened wolf. It's a big deal. The heroes of the film did not spare money for the arrangement of the sweepstakes, the selection of qualified personnel for accepting bets, equipment. And how Henry Gondorff (Paul Newman) played cards with an old wolf Doyle Lonnegan (Robert Shaw). It's in Henry's hands. Even shaking on the train to change the cards. The psychological line was developed from the beginning. Relax the enemy, let him fall into the trap. This is not an easy task. The heroes of the film coped successfully. Aerobatics.
I don’t know what movie to start with about clever scams, robberies and other similar subjects. But one thing is clear, George Roy Hill's The Hustle is a very worthy representative of the genre. It is clear from the title what the film will be about, or at least from the description exactly. It makes no sense to retell the plot, but it is definitely worth watching the film.
I don’t remember exactly how I came out on this film, most likely thanks to Top 250, but I definitely sat down to watch without much interest. True, after a couple of minutes, the film did its original work and I came to my senses already during the credits.
The title of the film "The Hustle" very accurately conveys the meaning, mood and message of the film. It is necessary to prepare for the fact that once two exhausted fraudsters Henry Gondorff and Johnny Hooker have taken up business with the aim of revenge on the leader of the mafia Doyle Lonneganaz, they will go to the end. It is one thing when a scam is done for money without any other purpose, and another when it is personal. In this case, the game is worth the candle anyway, which means the bad guy will lose anyway. And in order to see how it is original and at the same time just diluted, it is worth getting acquainted with the picture. Plus, Paul Newman and Robert Redford pulled their scam to the end. Even when it seems that this is the end, do not be deceived, it is not.
Thanks to this special moment, the brilliant performance of the actors, the excellent trend of Newman-Redford and the scam itself, the film is definitely worth watching!

Paul Newman, Robert Redford, Robert Shaw... What names!
At the time, they weren't just Hollywood stars. They were the people everyone was watching. Hill's film became an appotheosis for them in a joint work.
In 1973, $156,000 million, that's really cool.
Usually, it’s not just about money. The fact is that the film was made mockingly chic. We can say that this project marked the beginning of films with “swindles, robberies, etc.”
A fascinating and intriguing story. A wonderful game of actors, which can give a head start to the current “cinema figures”
The film is definitely a classic.
The film "The Hustle" is, perhaps, an icon of the whole genre, having lived a little more than forty years, nevertheless, looks interesting and relevant. And the point is not only in the production and scenery for the film, which significantly extended the “shelf life” of this tape, but in the concept of the script itself for the picture, which literally makes this period unlimited.
Two professional scammers after the death of their nominal “teacher” and a friend decide to join forces in order to break a really big jackpot of about half a million dollars. Small scams no longer attract them, and, probably, money itself does not attract them, our craftsmen need a certain drug - excitement and risk. Our main characters received such a drug, choosing a large local banker as their victim.
Exactly the same drug is received by the viewer from watching the tape, "Sham" - a film of one act, or action, looks on one breath and with great interest. Actors Paul Newman and Robert Redford do not need special introduction, their tandem turned out to be very powerful and, I would even say, presentable in the frame. I will once again emphasize the quality of the external world recreated by decorators, the entourage of the beginning of the last century is conveyed very carefully, and, most importantly, believable.
The regret is that this film could and should have been seen much earlier, if there are terms like "Best Film of All Time" - the public will never determine the sole leader. However, the film directed by George Roy Hill is one of such contenders, the standard of cinema of the last century and just a positive film.

Something more than a robbery is a real elaborate scam.
Another film by George Roy Hill in 1973. The film about the robbery - "The Sting." Cinema has become a classic and gave the world this classic of the genre, from which came many great films and "Bluff" and all sorts of other scams. The movie, which earned an insane amount of money and was received very warmly by the audience. The film became the culmination, the peak of the development of the genre and received the status of a cult in it.
It’s hard to say that George Roy Hill is the genius of the director’s craft, but he’s a great director who felt and knew how to make a lot of money for producers and entertain the viewer with a great spectacle. This phenomenal flair embodies and turns him into one of the most beloved and popular directors in America and around the world. The Hustle" and "Butch and Sundance" make George Roy Hill one of the most interesting directors.
Of course, the film is stupid, passable and meaningless. But it is charming, light and interesting, and also has an immortal atmosphere. Style, various scams and stunts, great actors and an outstanding soundtrack - all this has absorbed this film, and there is no imbalance in it. He is very neat, with great humor and wonderful charismatic acting.
Robberies, stunts, thefts, done in a great humorous style - that's what you had to come up with, and the director took a risk and did not lose. Irony and self-irony help in the success of the film.
The tragedy that occurred in the film pushes our heroes to revenge, which they commit in cold blood, thoughtfully, cunningly and very intricately.
Excellent work of the writer, who created the perfect world and ideal conditions for all sorts of “phrasing tricks”. The script develops dynamically and all events get along well and get along with each other, giving harmony to the plot. This is an interesting and interesting film.
Magnificent soundtrack. The title theme inspires and rivets the viewer to the screen. a topic that will not come out of your mind for the near future, and you will constantly sing it, and only a person who has watched "A scam" will understand and support you. Magnificent and successful, stylish musical background. Outstanding soundtrack, selected almost perfectly.
A trio of great actors Paul Newman, Robert Redford, Robert Shaw. Everyone plays amazingly and shows the aerobatics of the acting game. Charismatic, intelligent, cunning and whole characters. An excellent acting duet (Paul and Rob), embodying the main actors-friends in one of the coolest and most powerful tandems. Fantastic and real classic roles from outstanding actors of his time. I imagine them as the most famous and successful actors of their time. Robert Shaw in the image of an opponent and a villain is magnificent. The role of a great British actor. All three played great roles .
A film that needs to be watched and shown periodically. It’s much better than empty Oceans and all that kind of movies, sequels and remakes.
Light, entertaining, extraordinary and atmospheric film is a film that I adore and think you can watch it at any time. Since the classic is immortal and relevant always, and all films of this genre will be equal only to him.
I just have to look at it.
It’s hard to overestimate the importance of watching this movie for a novice filmmaker like me. First, I was introduced to a truly classic, most influential, and perhaps the best American robbery film. Now, in the various film debates about whether, for example, Ocean's 11 Friends is a significant film, I can throw a solid trump card, saying, as if by the way, "Yes, all this was already in the Scam: 1973, 7 Oscars." Haven't you heard of it?
Second, I discovered brilliant actors like Robert Redford and Paul Newman. You can poke a stick at me as much as you want, but the fact remains that I have never seen a movie with them before. The more enthusiastic my reaction today! Robert Redford plays very dramatic and feels great, so that you want to experience with him. Paul Newman, on the contrary, takes others: from him comes such charm, such charm that even after watching the picture, you remember his character with great pleasure, almost rubbing your hands with satisfaction.
Third, the music from the film – Scott Joplin’s ragtimes arranged by Marvin Hamlish – was also a real revelation to me. And in this I am not at all new: it is known that the soundtrack of “Humans” topped the American chart. The success of the film contributed to a significant increase in interest in the work of Scott Joplin, an unjustly forgotten black composer who died in 1917. Thanks in large part to The Scam, its status as a classic is not in doubt today.
I’m glad to inform everyone that “The Hustle” is just incredible what a luxurious tape! Colorful, realistic, subtle, ironic, dramatic, exciting, instructive - any epithet you want. To watch or not to watch, I think the question is clear. Personally, I am terribly glad that I chose to watch this film: it hit me like a bull’s-eye, and from now on, undoubtedly, will be considered one of my favorite films.

7 Oscars about something, so they talk. This is the first thought flashed in my head after a cursory acquaintance with the description. And you know: 7 Oscars about something, so they say.
The time of the Great Depression is a terrible time in all its forms, especially in terms of economics: with work, as with money, it is a little tight. That's Johnny, and he's a little fraud. True, even in this craft he did not reach great heights, only intercepts a couple of hundred here and there. What was his surprise when another simpleton, instead of the expected amount, suddenly turned out to be a pack ten times thicker than expected.
But nothing good comes of it, neither for Johnny nor for the people around him. A little later, however, a young criminal matures to the cause of his life and begins to think out a plan, not without the help of an ace in the field of scammers. By the way, there is no less than half a million dollars.
The story holds until the very end, during which you sincerely worry about the heroes balancing on a knife blade. Serious money is a serious bet, but what is surprising is that the picture, despite the high-quality dramatic scenes, does not declare itself exclusively as an extremely tense movie, skillfully introducing injections of excellent humor, which is why viewing is not at all boring, and the pace is successfully kept at the same level.
A scam - in every sense of the classic of the genre, do not ignore such a work and deprive yourself of a lot of pleasure, especially if you are not indifferent to the "predatory" theme.
It's definitely a woman's movie. Despite chases, shootings, poker and bookmakers, this is still a woman's movie. How else can one explain the absence of at least one pretty woman and the presence of these two mind-blowing gentlemen: Robert Redford and Paul Newman? Elegant as vampires, attractive as temptation itself, charming as crooks. Who they really are. To be fair, these are the highest-class crooks. They are so cleverly fooling the police, other scammers and the spectators themselves that it takes their breath away.
As for the chases and shootings, they seem to have been introduced purely to admire the impetuous Mr. Redford, gracefully drawn into a three-piece suit and beautifully eluding the mafia and corrupt police. It seems that he filled the charm of the concept of “Hollywood smile”. His character absolutely knows that it is necessary to conquer a woman not with the help of hints and veiled appeals, but using clear instructions:
Go to the bathroom, open the window and wait for me.
Paul Newman doesn’t have to smile because he has the most smiling eyes in the world. For the first time appearing before the viewer a descended drunkard, pretending to be an uncouth rude man on the train, he then grows in all the splendor of his captivating genius of fraud.
Be prepared to see scammers of all stripes. A swindling labor exchange (“Go get a list and see who’s ready to work now”). Entire families of scammers with their dad - the best street fraudster in the States and their mother - an ex-fraudster. They even see God as an accomplice in another small enterprise.
You have never been to church before.
- I want to win the lotto. May God help me.
But they are indignant at the lack of piety in the son:
Leroy, it's time for church.
- Well, Mom, the most interesting.
- Who do you think you are?
The funny, adventurous mood of the film is given by moments that cause tension and anxiety in the viewer. These are the endless stalkers of Redford's character, the dashing Hooker, who literally step on his heels. Sales cop Snyder - with his clumsy crispy shoes, the elusive Salino - the subtle step of an invisible person.
But still, for a moment, the shiny curtain of the reckless and daring life of fraudsters opens, and we see fatigue. From endless pursuits, from eternal balancing on the edge - not even a knife, no - a poisonous sting. Why? The curtain opens, and the true scenery of the life of two brilliant con artists is exposed - screaming prostitutes rushing to the carousel. It remains only all night to sit in a hat on the bed and smoke, warding off thoughts about how it could have been different.
But this is only a moment's despondency, then again rush into the fight, more like a fight of cocks, and dancing in a hot pan. To bet your life and get everything or lose everything! . .
Experienced street thrower Johnny Hooker (Redford) is very unlucky. Together with an accomplice and his teacher Luther (Earl Jones), he had the opportunity to rob a mafia courier - the henchman of a large bandit Doyle Lonnegan (Show), who is not used to forgive his abusers. On the same day, Luther is killed by mercenaries. Wanting revenge, Hooker finds a clever scammer Henry Gondorff (Newman) and offers him to throw Lonnegan in a big way. He certainly agrees. And the jackpot is good, and the object is incredibly nasty.
It was still a time when paintings such as “The Hustle” and “The Exorcist” were seriously considered favorites of the Oscar race. For comparison, imagine that in our time, the preferences of the members of the Academy would be on the side of, for example, “11 friends of Ocean” and “Devil’s Advocate”, so forgive me film lovers for such a loose comparison. It's neither good nor bad, just different times - different values.
So, the film “Crazy” is a purely entertaining comedy-melodramatic movie with an interesting plot and good bright actors. Perhaps the story itself will seem simple and predictable to the current generation of moviegoers, but then, I am sure, it looked quite fresh and entertaining. Not too cunning scam, which erected around the mafia main characters, is based on the banal greed and stupidity of Lonnegan. And as it often happens, not the most virtuous Hooker and Gondorff look on the background of the head of the criminal world almost Robin Hoods, taking money from the rich and giving it to their loved ones.
A beautiful tandem of outstanding actors Redford, Newman and Shaw plays almost standard: easy, fresh, bright and relaxed. They take the viewer into the world of big money, beautiful women, booze, card games and ubiquitous cheating.
For all its merits, however, I wouldn't call "The Hustle" anything genius. Yes, maybe it was one of the first really successful genre hits. However, for example, the already mentioned film “Ocean’s 11 Friends” in addition to the novelty of the idea, does not lose anything to its “older brother”. It’s just that the scam has been there before, and it should be treated with respect.
I recommend watching this movie. Believe me, the past 40 years have not influenced the perception of this tape. It's just as simple and fun and easy. Excellent evening entertainment, which is automatically supplemented by a bit of information about the classics of cinema. So to say, pleasant with useful.
George Roy Hill’s film “The Hustle” has long been a real classic of cinema. It is hard to imagine a more thoughtful, intricate and action-packed crime comedy in cinema. Based on David W. Morer’s book The Big Crook, which depicted the most famous cheaters of the early 20th century, screenwriter David S. Ward came up with a remarkable story about two scammers who once decided to take revenge on one mob boss for the death of their very dear friend. The crooks started an unthinkable scam, which literally amazes with its resourcefulness and ingenuity. And we, the audience, it remains to watch how cleverly the characters set traps to their enemy and no less deftly lead him by the nose throughout the film. And this spectacle, I will tell you - amazing, because so many unexpected, stunning and impressive plot twists and author's decisions in one picture, you can hardly see anywhere else! Despite the fact that one of the main stars of the tape Robert Redford at first was very skeptical of this film project and almost refused to participate in it, “The Hustle” brilliantly performed at the box office and received as many as six “Oscars” including the award for best film of the year!
The picture is almost 40 years old, and it does not cease to please the audience with its thoughtfulness, fascinating and sophistication. In addition to the grand storytelling, it has many other cinematic aspects that look great. And first of all - this is the stylization of the film under the classic gangster tapes of the 30s. Well, firstly - the action of "Crazy" takes place in this period of time, which implies the appropriate scenery and interiors, and secondly - the work of decorators, costumers, lights and props was performed so talented and skillfully that it seems as if you are watching a picture that came to us from the golden era of Hollywood. Deprived of all computer effects, “The Hustle” is able to literally move its viewer to a given time in the film, and charm the criminal atmosphere of Chicago – one of the most gangster cities in the United States of the first quarter of the 20th century. By the way, the mayor of this town, Richard J. Daley for several years flatly refused to let filmmakers into Chicago if they intended to shoot anything incriminating and negative about him, but fortunately, he made a pleasant exception for the creators of “The Scam”. However, most of the filming still took place in the studio pavilions.
In order to list all the successful episodes of the tape, unfortunately, there is not enough space in this review, but I can not tell about the most memorable and beloved ones. Apart from the stunning final twist with Doyle’s swindling, which was preceded by no less stunning traps set for the vigilant thug, there is also a dizzying scene in the night express in the picture, which, perhaps, deserves one of the most worthy places in the annals of cinema. The main characters in it for the first time probe the object of their deception in the face of the bloodthirsty and vengeful Doyle, and with the help of a cunning scam, first at the card table, and then, in the personal compartment of the gangster, put him on a hook, from which it, according to their cunning idea, is unlikely to be able to uncouple. And here you can watch not only the great script decision and excellent directorial incarnation, but also the amazing acting from themselves: Paul Newman, Robert Radford and Robert Shaw. These names, I think, do not need special representation, because each of them literally personifies classic Hollywood and is the idol of a multi-million audience. Newman played professional fraudster Henry Gondorff, who agreed to a major scam by one of Chicago’s most powerful gangsters solely because he killed his best friend. And Robert Redford turned into a petty scammer Johnny, who was the partner of the murdered friend Henry and who needed his help to take revenge on the cunning bandit. And, finally, the bandit - Doyle Lonnegan, portrayed the talented and charismatic Robert Shaw, who, by the way, was not supposed to be lame - his limping gait was invented by the authors after he injured his ankle. It must be admitted that the given went to his image only for the benefit, because it is very interesting to distinguish Lonnegan from many other cinematic villains.
Throughout the viewing, I never left the thought that young Robert Redford is insanely similar to the modern Hollywood actor - Brad Pitt. Brad Pitt looks like a young Redford. And the similarity here lies not only in appearance, but also in relation to acting. However, the latter was seen only occasionally. I would not be surprised to learn that in preparing for some of his roles, Pitt was inspired by the character of Redford, whom he so charmingly and deftly portrayed in this picture. The rest of the actors also pleased, and especially here I want to note Eileen Brennan, embodied on the screen the image of cunning and stately Billy. I will never forget the amazing episode with her participation, in which she protects her friend talking with the wanted Johnny from a cunning policeman, whose role was very eccentricly played by Charles Durning. I also want to mention Dimitra Arliss, who managed to present her simple-looking waitress Loretta so mysteriously that in the climactic scene with her participation, you literally wonder what an unexpected trout her heroine throws out!
P.S. Before us is one of the best crime comedies in the history of cinema, which to this day excites the audience with its thoughtful plot moves, intricate actions and atmospheric visual delights. A more subtle, dizzying and fascinating film scam is hardly imaginable! The film should definitely be seen by every self-respecting moviegoer!

This film is called a classic of the genre. More precisely, the founder of the genre of crime films, a certain standard. And he has not lost his wonderful humor or relevance. Perhaps this makes him a role model for all such paintings. Much has been gleaned from the “Scum” by modern legislators of the genre. For example, we easily learn the “division” of the film into several parts / chapters from Richie and Tarantino, and the need to fill these transitions with a funny soundtrack is quite striking. But in no way do I want to say that the subsequent films just duplicate “The Hustle”. They are good in their own way, but you need to know where it all started. .
So the action takes place in Mafia-era America. The main character in an unusual way “throws” one of the members of the mafia group, without even knowing who he cheated. But the mafia has long arms, and soon our hero will face severe punishment, which falls not on his head, but on the head of his mentor, who is killed. And that's where the real scam begins! Having conceived revenge, Jony goes to New York to the best con man in America and a friend of his mentor, offering him a tempting business: to throw the leader of the US mafia in a big way. Well, it's hard to resist, so preparations for the Scam begin. And everything would be quite easy and simple, if Joni did not get on the tail of the corrupt police, or rather its captain, who is also not happy with the clever fraudster. Everyone has their own interests, everyone is driven by a variety of motives, but there is something that unites them - the desire to leave the main mafia with nothing. What all this turned out to be – see for yourself!
To be honest, the film caught me right away. In it, instantly, from the first seconds, you can guess a good American movie, old schood. Wonderful actors, ornate script, scenery - all this immerses us in the atmosphere of old America, conveys its very spirit.
Paul Newman is a master of reincarnation! Who he only happened to visit during the course of the film: a drunkard, and a calculating businessman, and a brilliant crook, finally, a member of Western Union, and in each image he is beautiful.
In general, it seems to me that with so many actors it is not so easy to achieve harmony, to make them work as a whole, but in the film, and in the fraud itself, it can not be otherwise simple, otherwise ... inevitable collapse.

Mr. LoneMan Before us, gentlemen, of course, the king of the genre, the cherry on top of the cake, in this film there is nothing superfluous, everything is done at the highest level: the play of actors, music, directing work. Undoubtedly magnificent blows from the bison of the cinema Newman and Redford: they are both chic, each in their own way. Good, of course, and Mr. Lonegan played by Robert Shaw, very charismatic his eternal bodyguard. Very memorable gesture scammers during the film, scratching the nose, a beautiful idea! The scene with the game of poker on the train is generally a benefit of Paul Newman, who perfectly played the play. Of course, a masterpiece film should have a great ending and the final scene executed with brilliance, perfect wiring, just like in an encyclopedia. I envy those who will see this picture for the first time, I highly recommend it to everyone. 10 out of 10 Original
According to the plot, two friends decided to rob one gentleman, but in fact it turned out that he was a very rich gentleman, very strange you will say, because he looks like an ordinary person, but he turned out to be a courier of the mob ... That's where it all started. In general, the script is the strongest side of this film, however, as well as all subsequent films of this genre. As I remember in one movie, Beware of the Car, the narrator said, “The audience doesn’t like being cheated.” Well, the whole movie is a real hoax. At first everything seems confusing, but in reality it is simple. With a slight hand movement in the last 2 minutes, the director explains all the accumulated questions for the entire film. In general, the manner of shooting is very interesting. It seems that the director did his best. It was a very good idea to set the stage for the Great Depression, when everyone was starving, dying, and so on. In this case, the scam becomes more justified and appropriate. Although he is a scammer everywhere, even in the 30s, even in the 40s, even in the 50s and so on. But I wouldn’t say the movie is atmospheric. For example, in the same “Taxi Driver” Scorsese, there was clearly visible the city, its soul or something. There's nothing like that. I wouldn’t even say that the film takes place in the 30s if it wasn’t said in the beginning. I liked the acting in this movie the least. I expected something more from the Newman-Redford tandem. Just as they both did a great job in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (though it wasn’t interesting, but it wasn’t their fault), I expected no less, but in the end... it didn’t work out. If Robert Redford played even less, I haven’t seen anything like it from Newman. But the secondary roles are all good. The film still has a very peculiar soundtrack. Very good, by the way. It's like the old English movies. In general, I really liked the film, and I am sure that it is rightfully considered a classic of the comedy and criminal genre. Original
