Ha-ha-ha! You thought I was the real Quaid? It is.
Oddly enough, but this film has everything you need for boring viewing. It is only necessary to turn it on and the plot worn to holes will not be able to let go to the final. The initial credits with a powerful soundtrack only warm up the viewer, who will be rewarded with a competent presentation of material, without delaying and sagging. Perhaps my childhood impressions still play in me, but let me admit, there are a bunch of films that I was also once crazy about, but now they do not roll at all.
As a builder, Quaid always thought he deserved more than just being a hard worker. He often had dreams about Mars, but could not understand what they meant. After seeing an advertisement for the Memories company, he goes there for new impressions.
The selection of actors is perhaps the main driving force of the picture. It is good to see them so young and energetic. They can be said to play without forgery. But the striking force of the picture is the director and his team. Such chic productions of fights and shootouts that are breathtaking. And the main secret of this is that everything is done simply, without modern fencing on hands and feet. That's why it looks real and natural.
Special effects add a fat plus. This is not some cartoon and computer graphics. Everything is done with your soul, with your hands. Particularly interesting are all the new technologies that will abound in the future. Of course, when viewing, there is an impression of a narrow framework of the surrounding world, but it is beautifully played and does not cause or go against the general specifics of the picture.
Well, another film where the hero almost single-handedly saves the world and this oddly enough deserves high praise.
8 out of 10
I am ashamed, but as a fan of Schwarzenegger since childhood, this film I watched only now. Most of the old movies are nostalgia for me, and mostly the ratings I put high, but it was a long time ago, and watching the film with a “fresh” look I can objectively assess it.
From the very beginning, we observe the life of an ordinary, unremarkable guy from the future who has a wife and a very ordinary job. But he wants something more, like going to Mars. But there's no way he can do that. Therefore, trusting advertising from TV, he goes to one very interesting company that can implant in him memories of anything. But it's not that simple.
In this film I liked the action, intrigue, humor. I was a little surprised that after watching a lot of action movies, I was hooked by an old film of the same genre. But it is, because the plot is not boring, special effects, very not bad. The feeling after watching it was the same when I saw 12 Monkeys, which is also fantastic, it’s also an interesting plot, it’s just as old but very interesting. So I'm going to put a solid eight, but I'm going to forget all the fantastic action movies I've seen and go up to nine because of the originality of the time.
A very good movie!
About changes. Not so long ago, a remake of the film “Remember All” by Dutch director Paul Verhoeven was released. A few years later, another remake of his stainless Robocop appeared on the screens. Perhaps it would not be superfluous to add to the list the sequel to "Basic Instinct" (where Sharon Stone is no longer so deadly, but still damn sexy). The question arises – where, while his films are being remade with a budget 3-5 times higher than the original, is the Dutch maestro himself? And he turns out to be making TV series.
Although at one time, Verhoeven created not just great films, but the real exemplary standards of cinema of various genres. If "Basic Instinct" for a long time captured the palm of primacy among erotic films (it is possible that to this day), then "remember everything", "robocop", "star landing" and "invisible" (hollow man - more correctly "devastated") forced a new look at the fantastic action movie.
About entitlements. If there is something to praise these films in the first place, then, of course, for the depth of design, thoughtfulness and meaningfulness of each frame. These important attributes of the film ensure the coherence of the narrative and the integrity of ideas, which today are not too common. The second significant advantage is the special effects created with the help of a whole group of specialists (reaching hundreds and thousands of people) still look “fresh”. For the most part, this is achieved by working exclusively with organic material and creating special living models (by the way, what is now interesting is Stan Winston, Rick Baker or Rob Bottin). In this regard, each character has its own individual traits, which are clearly imprinted in memory (what is worth at least the leader of the rebels).
The two factors above balance and complement each other. I think movies like “something,” “blade runner,” or “remember everything” have the perfect balance between an idea and its implementation. And, importantly, leave the viewer free space for his own imagination, free flight of thought and imagination – as in the famous last frame of the film, making you doubt that it all happened in reality, and not in the imagination of the character. In my opinion, this is the essence of respect and trust in the public.
It should be added that all this splendor was also supported by the mighty shoulders of the stars of the outgoing film era, the mere presence in the frame of which already made the film cult.
About the main. But the most important and essential aspect of the picture, in my opinion, is the hidden intonation of the director’s style, the invisible irony or subtle semitones, due to which the images, situations or actions of the characters acquire immeasurable depth. Today, this inner space is almost non-existent. Unfortunately, everything now looks template, too serious and boring. Also, there is no free space between the film and its creator, apparently because there is no attraction between them (as between the product and the logistician), although in such films as “remember everything” it is clearly traced. Another difference is that the film of the nineties, although it tells about the total suppression of the personality, at the same time does not shy away from humor and, sometimes, even parody itself, which can be clearly seen, for example, in the actions and behavior of Arnie, who, like the elusive and cunning mouse Jerry (not quite a good comparison), constantly leaves his pursuers with the nose and even allows himself to mock them, which makes representatives of power structures look not so frightening as in modern films, where they appear like such impersonal, cold, robotic, pragmatic. Thanks to this pretentiousness, the viewer even has doubts - and does he not travel with the main character in his own, bought for cash heroic fantasies? And if this is true, then everything changes dramatically, because you can easily see an analogy between the main character who bought an imaginary adventure and the viewer making the same deal. But none of us can know the truth – where fantasy ends and reality begins. What is the benefit of this knowledge?
In general, fantastic action films like “remember everything” do not become obsolete over the years, but how the wine becomes even sweeter and more pleasant to taste. We can say that the remakes, in this case, serve just to brighten all the advantage of the original.
It's hard to be someone you're not really. Difficulties of reincarnation entail a playfulness of feelings, emotional instability, and in the worst case, a split personality. The exception is considered to be rare cases when the object does not assume that he lives someone else’s life and plays on someone else’s field.
What if your entire existence is nothing more than someone else’s evil fiction and profanation? This sacramental question is answered with brilliance by the duo of the Dutch director Paul Verhoeven and the famous Hollywood actor Arnold Schwarzenegger in the fantastic action movie of 1990 “Remember everything”, based on the story by Philip K. Dick.
... Douglas Quaid dreams about Mars. Nightmares, mostly. In his dreams, the hard worker, who never left his native Earth, staggers on orange dusty rocks with a charming brunette and, bulging the zens, choking from lack of oxygen. Why does he wake up in a cold sweat? But he remains unwavering in his decision to visit the Red Planet, despite the excuses of his wife and colleagues in Stakhanov’s work. It is good that in the future to make such a trip is easier than a steamed turnip.
However, respectable Doug does not want to upset his wife, so he chooses a compromise option for himself, secretly making an appointment with the company “Memories”. Advertising promises that artificially implanted memory will be no worse than a trip. Clutching his teeth, Quaid agrees to false memories. Especially since a sneaky clerk gives him a bonus program to visit Mars as a secret agent. Given that the real Mars is shrouded in a constant expectation of civil war, and Doug’s salary is not news, he signs up for a surrogate. Not knowing that this innocent prank will change his whole life.
After more than 20 years, Verhoeven’s painting became a classic of the genre and acquired a truly cult status among fans of Schwarzenegger’s work. It’s not just because the film’s script is based on a really worthwhile literary work of popular science fiction and has been in development for 10 years, rather than being written on the lap to order for purely commercial purposes. And not because Iron Arnie turned accountant Kuyel's suffocator into Quaid's mighty uncle, the savior of the planets. Just the authors of “Remember everything” treated their creation with due respect and did everything possible to ensure that their film did not go unnoticed.
For these purposes, Arnold personally forced to reshoot the views and landscapes of the Red Planet, achieving the greatest realism of the picture. As the main makeup artist of the film was invited by the famous specialist Rob Bottin, who worked on such films as “Thing” Carpenter, “Legend” Ridley Scott and “Robocop”. At the latter, Bottin met the Dutchman Verhoeven, who shot his first full-fledged Hollywood project. The composer was the legendary Jerry Goldsmith, the author of music for “Alien”, “Rambo” and “Gremlins”. Not to mention the massive, expensive scenery in Mexico City, where most of the footage was shot.
But the most tangible contribution to the success of "Remember Everything" was made by Arnold Schwarzenegger, thanks to which the fantastic parable of supernatural mind manipulation and conspiracy theories, so characteristic of the works of Philip K. Dick, turned into a hurricane action movie with chases, fights and shooting. The filmmakers edited some violent scenes several times, but were never able to drop the rating below the adult R. Which is even better, because it is difficult to imagine that the actor, at that time considered the main movie hero of Hollywood, would turn into another “latex superman”. In the frame, the cervical vertebrae are habitually crunched, fake blood is poured, and Arnie himself traditionally gives out capacious, sarcastic phrases worthy of John Matrix from Commando and Ivan Danko from Red Heat.
However, “Remember Everything”, in addition to juicy action scenes, charismatic villains (Michael Ironside alone is worth it, not to mention Hollywood veteran Ronnie Cox, who migrated to the tape from the already mentioned “Robocop”) and bulletproof heroes can offer the viewer something more. To the depth of thought and philosophical subtext of another film adaptation of Dick, “Blade Runner”, the tape of producers Mario Cassar and Andrew Vaina falls short, but clearly above other straightforward “superfighters”. Schwarzenegger. Sophisticated fantastic background, games with reality and futuristic details of the future allow Verhoeven’s creation to confidently balance at the intersection of genres. Yes, then technology was not yet perfect, and some of the special effects today causes a smile rather than admiration, but for the early nineties tape was considered very advanced in the spectacular part. The Oscar for Visual Effects.
In 1999, the first attempt was made to revive the work of the writer, but the television film “Remember all 2070” (the action of Verhoeven’s picture takes place in 2084) and the subsequent 1 season of the eponymous series of great success with the audience did not have.
Oddly enough, but in the career of the future governor of California, already then receiving eight-figure royalties for the role, “Remember everything” did not find a worthy place. It just so happens that Arnold is primarily associated with the image of the Terminator or, at worst, the stubborn Colonel Dutch from Predator. It is possible, feeling this “replaceability”, Hollywood in 2011 decided to remake the tape Verhoeven. The production of the updated version was entrusted to Len Wiseman, the author of the first two parts of “Another World” and “Die Hard 4.0”, and the main role was approved by Irishman Colin Farrell.

It has already been more than 20 years since the release of this film, and I remember the movie as if I watched it yesterday, in the 90s very often this movie was played on various TV channels.
This movie I have seen more than once, and I think that many times I will watch it, because this classic, which is unlikely to be forgotten.
For 1990, the film is very impressive, I even think that now the film will look in one breath. I remember as a child I was even very afraid of this movie when the characters got out of their eyes, it looked really creepy.
When I hear the film Remember everything, then I immediately remember the magnificent direction of Paul Verhoeven, a cool game Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sharon Stone and many interesting moments that I saw in this project.
Paul Verhoeven shot a very worthwhile and exciting fiction, which impressed and impressive, the picture is amazing dynamics, a lot of shootouts and interesting plot moves and of course the plot itself I always liked.
Arnold Schwarzenegger, played a simple guy whose life is very predictable, he only dreams of Mars and wants to visit there, and as his desire comes true, everything will go a different way for him. Arnie, played a rather interesting character, most of his works are heroes who weed enemies left and right, but his hero Doug Quaid, he is not, he is a simple guy who is tired of predictability and wants entertainment and something new.
Sharon Stone, in the 90s, many went crazy for Sharon, in those years she was very good and sexy, she played a femme fatale, and played very spectacularly.
Movies for all time
A very twisted plot, impressive makeup of mutant Martians and dark humor are still in place. When I was a teenager, I really liked it.
Now I also liked the Martian landscapes, a couple of “fits” from the future (one of which was unobtrusively stolen by Besson in “The Fifth Element” – automanicure) and the image of a prostitute-dwarf. To Verhoeven's credit, there are no such claims to the images of women as in "Robocop" - both main characters are not only proud to fight, but also act sane and reasonable.
But, Gods, how bad Schwarzenegger is! Verhoeven clearly did not work with him as he should. From Arnold you can squeeze a decent level of play, but for this the director needs to strain. Verhoeven somehow didn't. From Schwarzenegger, Quaid, Hauser is like a concrete mixer. There and play something that, it would seem, but still so not in the notes gets that you want to close your eyes.
In particular, because of this, a very good line with Hauser's boss fell through. The idea of a personal friendship between the tycoon and his agent was stated, but was not played and lost in action.
It spoils the impression, and quite a lot. A more compelling protagonist, a greater emphasis on the ambiguity of the finale - and that would be cool to this day, not just as nostalgia.
By the way, apparently, one modern computer game about Mars parasitized great on this film. Well, if plagiarism, it means respect.
It is a pity that the “reboot” of the film did not succeed. To reproduce this dirty world of the gloomy future, so characteristic of the fiction of the eighties, the modern author is almost impossible. Humanity looks at the future differently. We now see the future as in Cloud Atlas or the rebooted Star Trek, whether it’s enjoyable or not, but fast, high-tech, interactive, glamorous. And in such a future, such a plot, and the idea itself, are simply impossible.
Time marks...
2084. The main character of the picture, the worker Douglas Quaid, understands that he is not the same person at all, but perhaps a former interplanetary intelligence agent who has undergone the procedure of removing memory from his head. As soon as he begins to check his suspicions, he becomes the object of hunting by the secret services. He manages to reach Mars, where he can finally find the solution to his mystery. Find the answer and “Remember everything”
“Remembering Everything” is a mind-blowing spectacle that carries an insanely atmospheric and gripping story. Incredibly exciting and bright adventures that cannot be forgotten.
The film “To remember everything” is not just a fantastic action movie, it is one of the brightest adaptations of the novels of Phillip Dick. It's a great visual component. And, of course, "Remember everything" is a cult movie.
Just no grade. The film is mandatory.
- Maybe it's just a dream. Give me a kiss before you wake up. . "
Filming a hidden camera. Salon "Total Recall." The queue before the procedure.
Doug Quaid: You know, I came here because I dream about Mars every night. The endless desert and she, the woman who holds my hand. I can't do this anymore, let it all come true, even if the memories are artificial. I am ready to exchange for this my respectable life, beautiful wife with appearance Sharon Stone and a stable income.
Fool, I would never trade my girls, mansion and money for some red planet, I would buy it. And if I hadn’t sold it, I would have bought a smaller one and painted it in the color I needed.
Salvador Dali: Painting is a thought, don't they paint us memories? Oh, find yourself among the local experts at least one fan of Cubism! And I would have a dream where a three-breasted maiden teases me, and suddenly I take off my pants and I have three... arms. She's surprised, shocked, I'm the first in her memory. Apparently, again I will have to ask in the dreams of a drug addict, the local universe, although futuristic, does not allow my genius to walk around.
Sigmund Freud: You have a serious problem. I've always thought your mustache wasn't just a banana. As for memories, for me they mean another battering ram with which an individual punches through psychological barriers the road to the real one.
Howard Lovekravd (complaintly): And I don't want to punch anything, I came here to forget Cthulhu, we lived with him for a long time, I disappeared into him. But it lives at a depth and it takes a very long time to get to it, so it is easier to forget, never remember ... (neighbors gazed at it perplexedly and moved away, an awkward pause).
Doug Quaid: And what do the pills do to people... So you, Freud, assume that that person on Mars is the real me?
Edmond Hamilton: In one of my books, the main character moves into the body of a person from another planet, in fact getting a new name and a new life. The problem is that he then wonders if it was a dream or not. I think your fate, Doug, will turn out the same. I don't know why you need new memories. I like your world - spacious, large-scale, a good example of fiction, sin to complain. Everything, as bequeathed to fiction.
Franz Kafka: Well, not quite "everything": rattling postmodern. Although... the forms change, but not the outlines of the plots. The same bureaucracy, the same corruption, we are like a drop in the ocean or, if we are lucky, a grain of sand in the mechanism of the clock, and it is still easier for heroes to let themselves be shot, so as not to become an impersonal unit waiting for its turn.
Michael Moore: And the satire, let's not forget it. After all, all science fiction is cheaters. You show this mess in miniature with a documentary, you eat rotten tomatoes. And here all the same direct text, and no complaints.
Arnold Schwarzenegger (coming out of office): Come in and see who's next. Good thing I'll tell you. At first something went wrong, but then it got better. I was told that I was an actor and I did a good job in the movie Remember Everything. There was another option with a cyborg, but postponed for later.
Ridley Scott (malignant): It's no use. I'll come back and see you next time on a cyborg set. True, it will not be a robot from the future, but some creator / creator / god, but flights to other planets and an unsurpassed urban world I guarantee. By the way, it's my turn [to the office].
Tim Burton: Well, the "Terminator" was taken, and "Avatar", and "Remember everything", but what is it! My Gothic schizophrenia has been failing me lately. You see, the studio gives money, I come up with an idea. And this fucking Depp doesn't leave the pavilion. I've already left money at the door. And cloffeline poisoned him, took him to Canada, but no, he's still coming back. And then I'm told that the quality of the movies, drops, the intriguing plots end.
Paul Verhoeven: Calm down, man, pull yourself together. To listen to you, making Schwartz in an identity-snapping movie is the ultimate dream. You think it's that simple? Here you do not chase Batman around Gotham: a colonial system with an impersonal society controlled by someone from above, these scenery, the atmosphere of the future ... Also, morality, they say you are not what was in your memories before, but what you do, those actions that ... ooh, shit. I would like to finish the film about the stripper and shoot it, that’s where I’ll come off.
Late evening of the same day. Everyone's long gone. From the office, looking back, Doug Quaid appears. He puts on his jacket and goes outside without noticing Pelevin sitting in the corner. Gunshots are heard in a few minutes.
Victor Pelevin (thoughtfully): Eidetic images haunt me. Sometimes it seems to me that our life is just a coil of film consisting of these memories lived by someone before us, and when the coil ends, the film we watch ends.
"To Remember Everything" is a classic film of the early 90s, which is a major achievement, both for that time of cinema and for the genre of science fiction in general. Nothing, absolutely nothing unusual and special, but, I must say, for this generation. After all, now there is a huge number of tapes of this direction, and they are mostly not always successful. More of a failure, and it's true, it is. Everyone has forgotten the classics and does not even try to remember them. I was one of them. Until recently. Namely, before viewing the presented picture, which is an unconditional breakthrough. Loudly, I don't think. And it is. Oh, yeah.
The introduction, at first, giving no idea of what to expect next turns into a slightly sluggish continuation, which does not have anything unpredictable or entertaining. That’s what I would think if I were an ardent hater of smart and well-designed projects. That’s what I would think if I were a lover of today’s cinematic deception of the century, shot without much mind and design. Yeah, yeah. Everyone would think that about “Remember everything”, not knowing how to understand the field of cinema at least somehow. Fortunately, but your humble servant more or less understands something, and in general glad that he thinks correctly, that is, in the right direction. It's not a bad start. The script is written in the competent language of cinematography, and this is insanely great for fans of this creation and for ordinary fans too. It is not necessary to force your brain to work when watching this movie, because the film looks really relaxed and even a little frivolous, a little bit. The visual does not cause much excitement, and we do not need this, right, dear viewers? That's right, don't. Those in desperate need of Bread and the Spectacle will be forced to relax and throw their heads back, initially unprepared to see anything supernatural or insanely spectacular. Timekeeping is not large, not small - uniform. You won’t get tired and you won’t get bored either.
Schwartz. His milestone in the history of cinema. A positive milestone, by the way. You'll think. Cool. Strong. Steel. In short, Schwartz. It seems to me that it is not worth giving a large and long description of his character, since everyone has known for so long that Arnold did not star in any film - he will always play the role of himself. Approach, he has the right approach. Natural and very necessary. What else to add, in fact, nothing to add. Well, if there's nothing like that. What to write a paragraph in vain. Still, no one is interested and hardly necessary. Therefore, summing up, I will conclude my short review of the film “Remember all” with the following words: “Classic – it is also a classic in Africa”. Look, love, live: the movie...
Adventures of a simple hard worker who got into difficult troubles, because of his own curiosity.
In theory, such films should, after the expiration of time, be released from any boring criticism. How can you look at the situation when so many years have passed? For its time, it was a genre classic, especially for children. Now it looks with full understanding of all sagging and other numerous shortcomings. But anyway, everyone wants to leave a positive impression about the project, if only for the sake of nostalgia.
Paul Verhoeven ("Flesh + Blood", "Robocop") did everything possible for the nineties to carry out a qualitative transfer of the literary work of Philip K. Dick to the screen. Arnold Schwarzenegger ("Commandos", "Predator"), Sharon Stone ("King Solomon's Mines", "Above the Law") and Rachel Ticotin ("Fort Apache, Bronx", "Critical State"), also toiled for fame. In general, it is difficult to express any claims to the picture, because everyone understands that at that time everything looked and felt much better than now. However, according to the established tradition, people's memory will retain only good impressions about this fantastic epic, and petty nagging, still expressed aloud, can sound only from the younger generation, which already has its new idols of childhood.
And as a result, on the agenda we have action, which every moviegoer needs to familiarize himself with, because this is, after all, a whole milestone in the history of the film industry (+ deserved Oscar for visual effects). The rest of the viewing is recommended, but not mandatory.
Speaking about the most “kinogenic” incarnations of the Martian theme, it is impossible not to mention the film “Remember All” released in 1990.
The film adaptation of the story “From the depths of memory” (written in 1966) of the great “destroyer of reality” Philip Dick, who even the shortest story combines the qualities of a first-rate candidate in Hollywood blockbusters and a psychedelic trip, forcing an inexperienced reader to utter the sacramental “what did the author smoke?”
Dick, unfortunately, not only smoked, for this reason his departure from life and literature was premature and tragic, but his influence on world culture, as a thinker and visionary, is invaluable, and the list of creators inspired by him, full year after year.
Then, at the dawn of the nineties, the following remarkable people took up the film adaptation.
Director - a fan of jokes "on a wide foot" Paul Verhoeven, who has already joked about the robot-comic and medieval-knightly discourses in the films Robocop and Flesh and Blood respectively (and later, as we now know, there will be such “mass breaks of the pattern” as Basic Instinct or, for example, Star Troopers).
The main role is a man-titan Arnold Schwarzenegger, who does not need long performances.
The action of this, in all senses, blockbuster (at one time received an Oscar for the best visual effects, and, among other things, known for a record even by the “Schwarzenegger” standard of the number of antiheroes destroyed in the frame), takes place in 2084. The film is about a simple American worker. He dreams of flying to partially terraformed and densely populated Mars, sees him in strange dreams, but in view of the high cost of the tour, decides to limit himself to artificial memories, which, if you believe the advertising, is successfully implanted by everyone for a reasonable amount by the company Rekoll.
An attempt to work with the memories of the hero leads to a systemic failure, it turns out that a simple hard worker is not at all simple, and someone has already managed to work with his memory. Further, the attempt to break the networks of corporate conspiracy leads to a journey to the real Mars, the hero is hunted, no one can be trusted, not even his own wife (especially since she is played by Sharon Stone); enemies are all around. The dishonest businessmen who hold power over the Red Planet trade air and promote the growth of generations of mutants. Resistance movements are in full swing, and alien mechanisms are hidden in Martian caves.
The hero’s attempt to understand what is happening in his own head, leading him through all the inhuman trials, gives a real chance to give the Martians a blue sky, run an atmospheric generator, teach the planet to breathe. Looks like it's all, Happy End, win! But was this whole odyssey really there? Or is our hero still in the office of the company “Recall”, fastened to an uncomfortable chair and experts methodically write in his memory, one by one, the chapters of the catalog of spy adventure “Blue Sky over Mars”?
Verhoeven’s eccentric and, in some places, existential action movie gave rise to a whole series of imitations combining a “household” portrait of the future with the problems of the dark depths of the human psyche, laid the foundations of genre style for several years ahead, and Schwarzenegger himself, then still seriously striving to develop his career as a dramatic actor, not a politician, in the role of a person who embodies his dreams about Mars in reality, moving to the very core of them through mountains of corpses and rivers of blood-ketchup, seems to give off the screen a key metaphor for understanding of the role of science fiction in modern culture.
The most eloquent confirmation of its importance is the fact that in August 2012 the premiere of the eponymous remake from director Len Wiseman, with artist Colin Farrell as Schwarzenegger, took place.
Long ago, in a galaxy far away... Some fools have gone to Mars.
John Gray said in his best-selling book, “Men from Mars, Women from Venus.” It affects everything: in tastes, preferences, views. However, we are not only able to get along together, it is necessary for us and even a condition for our happiness. So from the August premieres of this year, my choice fell on the film “In the rhythm of the heart”, because at one time I gave dance classes 10 years, and my husband, being a fan of fiction, bought tickets for “Remember everything”. Oh, I was so angry. I went to the cinema with only one purpose, to criticize this creation to dust. Surprisingly, I liked the film. I quickly thawed and switched to the action on the screen, and when I came home, I decided to revise the original, which here is called only a “masterpiece”. Moreover, critics of Len Wiseman in everything cited the example of Paul Verhoeven. So from the film of 1990, which I saw as a child, but did not remember, I expected much more than from the “passage” fantastic action movie of 2012.
But my notions of "masterpiece" diverged again from most, because I almost died of boredom while watching. Having hardly looked it to the end, I came to one single conclusion - what was interesting in childhood, it is better to leave it there. After all, the technology of filmmaking has stepped so far that the film of 22 years ago looks ridiculous. The cardboard scenery resembles a scene for a morning in kindergarten, the action scenes are so sluggish that I wanted to press the rewind so that the characters began to move faster. The visual range is frankly weak. No, of course, for 1990, it must have been great! But now it looks ridiculous.
Next is a story that everyone admires. I may not be a fan of science fiction, but I accept it reasonably. So here the whole laudatory plot is a two-hour raving, the main character of which is a huge uncle from the category of “there is power – there is no brain”. Unfortunately, I haven’t read Philip K. Dick’s story, and I don’t know if it’s the fault of the writers. In general, Doug Quaid is a dull-headed villain, with one emotion on his face, with the same emotion as the girl in the helmet from the joke about a brick. The "idiot" dream for him was Mars. Reasons are hard to understand. It was a dream, so what? No matter what the child does, So he went to a company that sells fake memories and made an adventure on his ass instead of memories.
In the 2012 film, there was a problem, the atmosphere of discrepancy between reality and the aspirations of a particular person was transmitted, dissatisfaction and the actions of the hero were understood. It may be just a stamped Hollywood action movie, but it has psychology and revealed images. That's not in Verhoeven's work. Apparently, the emphasis was on the fantastic aspect, so all the characters turned out to be "neither fish nor meat." Tell me what's brilliant about this? Well, Schwarzenegger's running, pissing everyone right and left. Well, his goal is global, sort of. Thousands of them. The only difference is that it takes place on Mars. But this makes it even sicker, because you don’t believe anything, and because of the presence of the red planet, even a hint of plausibility is lost.
And then there's acting. Magnificent Arnie! Schwarzenegger's charisma! Oh, so much praise that I want to wear glasses to see something. Where? I probably never really liked Schwarzenegger, because, apart from the impressive dimensions, he has nothing to show. Of course, for the roles of duboloms, he is not replaceable, looked good in “Terminator”, where it was necessary to play not a person, but a robot. In the rest of the films, we just see a violin face with “not disfigured intelligence” and two emotions. In Verhoeven's film, this is: a Hollywood smile expressing "oh, I'm happy and I'm all right," and the second "bewilderment" - the result is very good, because, apparently, Schwarzenegger and in real life constantly walks with a similar face. That's where I believed him, it's in the scene where there's a dialogue with Harry about Remember Everything. "Don't joke with your brains," Harry advises. “Exactly,” agrees Doug with such a look that his brain has already been joked, and, not quite successfully.
Sharon Stone also does not treat my favorites, but did not annoy and that is good. But Melina performed by Rachel Ticotin turned out to be an inadequate fool. Then she grabs Arnie "for the housekeeping", then slaps him, after a second she jumps with kisses, and after a few more states that he used her and puts a gun to his head. Yes... a very logical girl. In intelligence, it seems, to be like your chosen one.
A lot of violence, blood, vile scenes. Lots of pathos. Perhaps 22 years ago, it was all a novelty and was received with a hurrah when the viewer “did not eat anything sweeter than carrots.” I'm sorry, but it's time. And the time for 1990’s “Remember Everything” is gone forever. If you loved this film, it is better not to review, so as not to be disappointed, not to love – do not torment yourself. Watch only true fans of Schwarzenegger, who consider his stone face the height of the art of the lyceum.
A movie where the eye rests. No 3D is pure action. Real fights, great acting, beautiful video sequence, Schwarzenegger with a towel on his head. And also – everyone’s favorite endless rounds in the clip and Sharon Stone.
Interestingly, the main character himself is from the “bad” guys and that he has two completely opposite personalities in his brain. Although, the personality is probably one; just Doug Quaid is a kind of Hauser conscience, which crawled out of the depths of his soul and finally took its rightful place.
But the main thing is a clear metaphorical description of modern life. The powerful never tell us the whole truth, and very often people suffer from lawlessness and injustice. Vilos Kohaagen literally privatized Mars, forced its inhabitants to fight for survival. But even at the bottom, they continued to believe in something and hope for a better life. A hero or something. And Doug may not be superman, but he gave people a breath of air. He gave them a new home.
In early 1990, intriguing posters appeared in US cinemas. On passing viewers, they stared sternly textured face, in which the features of Arnold Schwarzenegger were guessed. The posters were crowned with a meaningful slogan: “What will you do if someone suddenly steals your consciousness?” No one paid much attention to them then. Just as no one expected that the premiere of “Remember All”, held on the screens in the summer of the same year, will produce the effect of a bomb exploded. The story of the earthly (in all senses) working man Doug Quayde, who was suspiciously dissatisfied with his respectable life in a fancy apartment, as well as his wife with the appearance of a Playboy girl of the month Sharon Stone and the possibility of an annual family vacation on Saturn, became a subconscious response to the aspirations of those who dreamed in the era of a one-dimensional society of consumption of something larger and significant. Paul Verhoeven's new film gave shocked viewers such an opportunity in full.
Pure-blooded hallucinatory fiction. No alternative blue pills. Exceptionally magical red. Shoot the one who offers it as a way out of your sleep, and your fantasies will become your memories in a second. An exciting schizophrenic quest that begins at the starting point of “you are what you remember” and ends with “you are your actions, not your memories.” Embodied on film spy graphic novel by Pierce Anthony, the naturalism of which was achieved with the help of hand-made model miniatures and grandiose shooting in the Mexican deserts. Mesmerizing Martian landscapes and gray urban cubism, shaded by the barbaric luxury of fountains splashing from shot arteries of blood. The lack of 3D graphics not yet invented in those days was more than compensated by the appetizing availability of Martian women and the acute phantom pain of the male half of the audience in the place of a potentially missing third hand. The surrealism of the future in all its eidetic flesh: bright, realistic, large-scale, depicted in full-fledged audiovisual sensations of the present. The movie’s motto might well be Total Recall’s slogan: “Your brain can’t tell the difference, or we’ll give you your money back.”
A physicist and mathematician by training, Paul Verhoeven came up with his own formula for the successful intellectual blockbuster of the 90s. As a primary source, the director took the book by X-Man Philip Dick, multiplied the irony over the canons of the genre by a frank mockery of the laws of physics, the personality of the main character of the film split into two, the number of killed was forced to reduce to seventy-seven, raised the female breast to a cubic degree, and the adrenaline drive to an absolute. Characteristic for Verhoeven addiction to beautiful charismatic actors with powerful energy and increased attention to the quality of the created film space plus careful detail helped to create a great example of a high-quality futuristic action movie. In response to accusations of cruelty, the Dutchman aplombly declared his love of realism, referring to his childhood spent in the Nazi occupation and endless bombing. With a sly smile, citing as an argument the poetry of trivial Flemish painting as a national source of "landliness" of his cinema.
An unsurpassed master of fooling around the head, he later admitted that he specially shot his film in “two worlds”. The plot of “Remember everything” can be tried on both objective reality and a tourist dream bought on credit. Schwarzenegger believed that the adventures of his hero are real. Verhoeven was initially silent about his point of view. Stone did not know whether her character was real or a figment of the protagonist’s imagination. As a result, both viewers and critics were divided into two hoarsely arguing camps, which was only to the benefit of the film's phenomenal box office success. Salvador Dali once said, “False memories are as different from real ones as fake gems are from diamonds.” Fake ones are always brighter and look better.
Verhoeven’s film illustrates numerous studies of false memories. Human memory is not an archive with folders. And not even a documentary newsreel. It’s a fascinating feature film based on real events, with our brain rewriting the script every time we try to remember something. We’ll never know which part of the script is real and which one the writer wrote because he thought it would be more beautiful. Falsification of memories is akin to the Supreme film fantasy implanted in the mass film industry, with the same force tempting a new and new generation of viewers. What a tempting, paranoid temptation to find out one day that your whole life as an average person is not true! Who knows – perhaps someday, in the distant future, humanity with the help of the implant of truth will be able to fully understand the explosive mixture of their secret desires and real facts and remember everything.
After watching Len Wiseman's "Remember Everything," which is filled with great detailed graphics and great action, that is, "action", I decided to turn to the original of the 1990s. Numerous “film critics” who denounce the remake often compare it to Paul Verhoeven’s film, defining the latter as a benchmark or even a masterpiece. It was necessary to refresh the memory of the original picture, as with the passage of time a lot was forgotten, and it was necessary to remember everything.
I'll start positive. Schwarzenegger is undoubtedly a much more charismatic figure than Colin Farrell. One phrase, "Don't crap me," uttered with a signature Austrian accent, is worth it. The permanent surprise on the face and "house-brows" of the new Douglas Quaid rest. Firmly entrenched in memory images that stirred up the lively childhood imagination still please the eye: a hellish machine-driller, bulging above the normal eye, the leader of the Martian opposition to atypical appearance, a deceit head, a three-breasted prostitute-mutant. An interesting plot twist, in contrast to the simplified remake, looks more justified, although it does not make special weather in the context of the inevitably impending happy ending. Views of the red planet complement the positive component of the film. That's it.
Otherwise, Verhoeven’s “masterpiece” is unrestrainedly losing to the 2012 film. Incompetent staging of action scenes, striking with their clumsiness; squalid scenery, made either for an ambulance or for a drunken hand; “futuristic” cars, plowing the expanses of three filming pavilions, sometimes cause serious feelings: suddenly such a miracle will fall on a bump and all the booth glued with excessive work will instantly fall off? It'll be embarrassing. A tracking device is something (no offense to old Carpenter). The relic Pac-man will have better graphics. All this nonsense methodically, step by step, destroys the main thing - the atmosphere of the future.
If you analyze in detail what and how, then there is a tangible risk to go beyond the review. One thing is important: despite Arnie’s presence and some of the undoubtedly successful images listed above, it seems that this is not a declared blockbuster, but a passing B-Movie. Don’t talk about the 90th year. At the time of the onset of the distant 90th year, there were already cult “Terminator”, “Predator”, “Aliens”, “Die Hard”. So why does Remember Everything, which has a budget many times higher than the films listed, look, if not hopeless, then very outdated? Why does any of the four mentioned, when viewed now, many years later, capture almost as much as the first time? The answer is simple: Verhoeven is neither Cameron nor McTiernan. It’s just not the right level and no amount of money will help. The overrated Dutch director shot a good fantastic action movie - a product of his time, but nothing more.
“Remember Everything” is a typical representative of the sad category of films, the memories of which are much better than themselves. For this reason, I would probably refrain from revising RoboCop, The Running Man, and the like—there is too much risk of disappointment. Why destroy childhood memories? Let these films remain as they were remembered in childhood. Sometimes you don't have to remember everything.
Paul Verhoeven is known for all his unsurpassed masterpieces, which have already become cult classics and in many countries of the world have long been listed in the list of the best films in the history of cinema. Paul his film products can surprise the world with a vision of the future, which he clearly has in his paintings. His fantastic action films personally impress me in such a way that there is no comparison in modern versions. When I was a kid, everyone watched "Remember Everything" like I did. But even ten years later, I remember the beautiful Sharon, the big Arnie, the three-breasted girl, the fat transformer and much more. The director has his own style, inherent only to him - from the moment of showing the final credits, the viewer begins to wait for the continuation. The stories of the characters seem endless, and the film made only one, but what!
Fantastic picture, based on the story "Philip Dick", tells us about a man who has nightmares, and in the panic of everyday flashbacks, he wakes up all in sweat. Quaid has a charming wife who is constantly jealous of a brunette whose presence in a dream somehow makes the hero Arnold condescending to this. Despite all the instructions of his wife and colleague, Doug still goes to the company for memories. From the very beginning of the film, we are shown a strong picture, which manifests itself in large interchangeable blocks of billboards, huge and flat TVs, cars. Entering the office of the administrator, he begins to choose the ingredients for his future sleep with a charge of new memories. Something goes wrong, and he knocks out all the doctors and begins to see a conspiracy everywhere to destroy his spy figure, although the workers in the white coats tried to tell him before he hit them that they hit the wrong part of the memory, as a result of which the failure occurred. When leaving the building, he is attacked by people of a certain Richter, and Doug quickly eliminates them, leaving torn and bloody marks on their body from bullets. And when she comes home, the sweet wife starts to beat him up so that he has no choice but to knock her out, which he does. Trying to get away from the chase of bad guys, he picks up the phone of a random call, under which his old friend, whom he naturally does not remember, hides, and hands Quaid a case with spy things, is removed. The main character begins to delve into what is happening that he really must go to Mars in order to end this mysticism.
Mars looks perfect. I still remember beautifully made-up characters whose appearance caused disgust and interest. There is no atmosphere there, as Vilas Cohaagen does not want to allow bankruptcy in his business, because he relies on the money that citizens pay for air. And because of his constant lack, they begin to mutate and acquire certain skills, which helps them hide their underground group for a long time, in which Quaid joins, finally meeting their black-haired passion. Under such pressure of fear and violence, they must protect themselves from further adventures and air scams by Cohaagen.
The atmosphere of a real planet is present, as if they were not actors, but real beings. The scenery is perfect, for which we can thank many decorators who took part in this. Humor, like Mars, plays the most important role here, and it comes not only from the main character, but from everyone else. A real black humor that you will grin and laugh at! Jost Vacano a great cameraman. We can say that he is a personal operator of the Pole, as he accompanied his success with his work on many projects. I liked the editing work, although sometimes there are no docking, but for such a dynamic and fantastic action of that time it is normal. And Jerry Goldsmith has created intriguing music that alarms the sensation of a thriller.
Personally for me, the final was two-fold, for which I also thank Paul.
Arnold Schwarzenegger is a very strong actor, and his strength is manifested primarily in acting qualities, and only then in physical structure. Charon Stone plays very passionately and sexually, which is rare in modern cinema. I was pleased with the presence of Dean Norris and Michael Ironside.
Based on the above, we can conclude that I recommend this picture to everyone without exception. Everyone should see it! For how can one understand modern cinema without relying on the knowledge of classical films? The fantastic world of Philip Dick is perfectly conveyed, so that the viewer will think about it for a long time. Clear humor, cool muzzles, interesting shootouts will not let you get bored.

The huge commercial success of this expensive (with a budget of $ 50 million (according to other sources – even $ 65 million) box office was $ 261.3 million, of which $ 19.39 million came at the national box office), as well as “one of the most complex and visually interesting science fiction films in a long time” (an epithet of Roger Ebert) ironically explained by the fact that the audience, exactly fascinated, attended several sessions in a row, trying to understand the intricacies of intrigue. Of course, there was also the magic of the image inspired by the superstar. Arnold Schwarzenegger, as impressed by the amazing screen world, combining the sophisticated imagination of artists, uncompromising severity and even cruelty (originally the film was given an X rating - and the authors had to urgently remove and rewire scenes containing violence) with a passionate denunciation of anti-imperialist (essentially revolutionary!) pathos. Separately, I would like to note the technological breakthrough made by filmmakers who used the possibilities of animatronics with brilliance (special Oscar) and at the same time turned out to be among the pioneers in mastering the methods of computer image generation. And yet, the main achievement of the creators of the tape is seen – especially retrospectively – it is the discoveries in the field of film drama, a hundredfold justified the tenacity with which screenwriters Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett, who bought from Philip K. Dick the rights to the story “Memories in bulk and retail” (or, according to another version of the translation of the name, “From the depths of memory”) a decade and a half earlier, tried to implement the project.
What in “Blade Runner” /1982/ remained at the level of subtext and vague hints, in the film “Remember everything” acquires full force. And although Dr. Edgemar fails to convince Douglas that what is happening is only appearance, the result of a failure caused by a schizoid embolism, and the director seems to consistently adhere to an objectivist interpretation of events, the cunning remark in the finale is legitimate. To begin with, the very possibility of ambivalent perception of the world was sufficient, which, even if it is not a dream or an implanted memory, is still not equal to itself. The artificially created personality gradually gains the upper hand and becomes independent, like a Golem or Frankenstein’s monster – only upside down, since the ex-Hauser, not accepting the imposed role of a double agent, does not hesitate for a moment, moving to the side of good. Paul Verhoeven goes even further than in “Robotic Policeman” /1987/ (by the way, which delighted Arnold, who insisted on the candidacy of this Dutch director), painting in gloomy colors a possible future of mankind in which growing scientific and technological progress while maintaining a dominant position among omnipotent corporations will provide manipulation of consciousness of such density and depth of penetration into the psyche that one can only be horrified. The only hope is, oddly enough, the person himself, who at the key moment still receives, listening to obscure subconscious impulses, freedom of moral choice.
“Remember everything” is a rare example of a work whose spectacular potential is reliably protected for decades to come, in which at the same time the hurricane power of the images created serves to defend complex, philosophically significant ideas, and the structure of the picture itself excludes the possibility of thoughtless pastime at a session. It is funny that a kind of gift was given not by Rachel Taicotin, who portrayed a modest and selfless brunette Melina, but Sharon Stone, for her persistence in working on the part of the duplicitous blonde Laurie, who received an honorary membership in the Association of Stuntwomen and inspired Verhoeven for the next production - "Basic Instinct" /1992/.

Paul Verhoeven’s 1990 “Remember Everything” is an undeniable classic of fantastic cinema. Despite the fact that the time of the creation of the film is the early 90s of the last century, the spirit of the cinema of the 80s is felt in the style and atmosphere, when the authors did not think about excessive naturalism, humor permeated the plot from beginning to end, and the main character did not look back at anyone and did his true justice. The brilliant spy-paranoid plot of Philip K. Dick was successfully translated to the big screens by the Dutch Verhoeven. Good luck was the invitation of Arnold Schwarzenegger for the main role of Doug Quaid. Then he was still in his best form, and some lack of acting talents did not go to the picture at a loss.
The film about the mysteries of Mars turned out simply fantastic in every sense. The creators saturated the picture with a mass of interesting and memorable moments: beautiful Martian landscapes, areas of mutants, holographic deceptions, alien structures and much more. Of course, many things in our time are very outdated. This is especially true for the massive video communication devices and the ridiculous design of the cars of the future. But if you are fully imbued with the spirit of the picture, enjoy its lightness and dynamism, then you simply do not pay attention to the small details!
Among the secondary actors, I will highlight two negative characters - Laurie performed by Sharon Stone and Agent Reacher (Michael Ironside). These characters came out so interesting and charismatic that in them rage successfully combines with charm. And their humorous component distinguishes them from the mass of modern antiheroes for the better.
Despite some loss of relevance in the way of storytelling and outdated technical aspect, “Remember everything” 1990 is the best representative of a fantastic action movie and one of the best adaptations of novels by Philip K. Dick.

Once putting an assessment of this picture, I did it almost in advance, because the last time I saw a film like eleven years. Oddly enough, but the eminent three-breasted prostitute I just did not remember, in my memory there were only two scenes – when during a shootout on the escalator Arnie is covered by some guy and this guy is turned into shit and the moment when Ironside was torn off by an elevator. But overall, I remember that the movie was good. Therefore, I took an unprecedented step for myself - I assessed the film, which I almost did not remember, and even very highly appreciated.
The reason for the revision of the picture was, as you can guess, the remake of Len Wiseman, which is about to be released and, as I see, does not particularly please either critics or viewers. Well, the more profitable the film of the singer of violence Paul Verhoeven looks. And the more you begin to doubt the expediency of the remake, which I am unlikely to watch (sorry, but I still have to save money for the new “Dark Knight”, “The Expendables 2” and “Judge Dredd”).
So, the film tells about a simple builder Douglas Quaid, who from nothing to do decides to go to a company that creates customers false memories – they say a person will be able to happily remember how he, for example, tumbling with Claudia Schiffer, even if this actually did not happen. Doug wanted to remember a good weekend on Mars, because in reality, Doug’s wife (Sharon Stone) didn’t want to fly into the hole. But the procedure revealed something interesting - in fact, Quaid remembered that he had already been to Mars, and moreover - his name is not Quaid, his whole life is a lie, plus some personalities begin to hunt for him. But the worst thing is that his wife is with them.
The film is based on a story by Phillip K. Dick that I haven’t read (sometimes). But even though Verkhoven’s colleagues have changed a lot, it still feels that the literary basis is strong – the script is very original and can present many unexpected plot moves. Well, that was Phillip. But the rest did not lag behind – for 1990, the budget of 65 million was solid, and even more so for a film with an R rating. But they gave it to the right hands – they knew that Verhoeven is able not only to show violence, but to show it with taste, besides, the film breathes not only blood. Although, I must say, the shootouts here are very brutal and bloody, there are explosions ... yes, everything is here. Even Schwartz wrapped his head in a wet towel. I'm pretty sure that's not in the remake. And a PG-13 rating. It's sad.
Well, come on, it’s somehow unfair to scold a film that I haven’t seen yet, and for sure there will be fans on Wiseman’s tape, so I’ll release the Farrell movie in peace and continue to list the merits of the original. Actors, for example. They say that Schwartz is wooden, and in my opinion, quite normal. The only thing I didn’t like (probably embarrassed) was the fake laugh at the moment where Quaid cheats a platoon of soldiers with a hologram, but you forget about it instantly, because then he . . . knocks them over again! Only in a different way. Well, anyone who's seen it will understand. In fact, Arnold did a great job. And the writers tried, coming up with him as always a couple of catch phrases, which confirms the scene with an improvised divorce from the heroine Stone.
Also, Arnold is helped by the beautiful Rachel Ticotin, who also played at the level, well done. But this is not the main thing - the villainous backbone, that's who pleased. Michael Ironside is generally a good actor, so here he perfectly played a frowny and stubborn agent, maniacally pursuing Douglas. I also liked his assistant Michael Champion. Well, Ronnie Cox is as always chic, only he mostly repeats his own Dick Jones from RoboCop, but you do not have to complain - this is Cox, this is completely his image and his role.
It’s scary to say, but the movie is 22 years old. Is he pissed? Fuck it. Yes, a particularly sensitive eye will be able to see the outdated editing, for example, in the scene where Arnie is riding on a train and talking to a man, you can notice that the background of Mars is inserted, but... Jesus, who cares? The plans of Mars are astounding. And Rob Bottin's make-up and special effects (guess who won this year's Oscar?) are just amazing -- it was shot in 1990, with virtually no computer graphics -- but it's unforgettable. Technically, the tape is not outdated. And Jerry Goldsmith’s memorable soundtrack is still as audible as ever.
It’s a pity, of course, that Verhoeven is not in Hollywood now (and in his native Holland he, I wonder, shoots anything else?), it’s a shame that Arnie has aged, no matter how much they love him. And not only Arnie – Ironside day with fire (as an option – you can run Splinter Cell and listen to his hoarse voice), Ronnie Cox mainly works on television. But, so to speak, they retired for good reason (especially those who have left - Arnie is about to return to the new "Expendables"), leaving behind a really imperishable movie. Thank you.

Paul Verhoeven’s film “To Remember Everything”, based on the book by Philip Dick, seems to be an indisputable classic. I don’t think he deserves that title.
1990’s “Remember All” is a movie that can be easily missed. At first, watching it is even a little interesting and exciting, but then the frank trouble begins. When the action of the film is transferred to Mars, there comes a point when any desire to continue watching the picture is discouraged. The reason for this is too boring plot development. I don’t know about Philip Dick’s book, but Paul Verhoeven’s film was a total failure.
Particularly surprising is the fact that Remember Everything won an Oscar for its visual effects. Are you serious?! That in those years, such visual effects could be considered qualitative, I understand. But there were stronger representatives.
Of the cast, I didn’t even like Arnold Schwarzenegger, who played the lead role here. At some point, he looked stupid.
Sharon Stone could please only his appearance, Rachel Ticotine could not please even this.
In short, 1990's "Remember All" didn't make a good impression on me. Typical fiction, which in itself almost nothing special, interesting and fascinating does not have.
I’m ashamed to admit it, but until I sat down to see the movie “Remember Everything” and saw the credits, I didn’t know that it was an adaptation of Philip Dick’s science fiction novel “For You We Can Remember Everything.” Therefore, unfortunately, I will not be able to draw parallels between this novel and its adaptation. What I am definitely convinced of is that even though the film adaptation of the novel in the face of the movie “Remember Everything” is hopelessly far from it, in any case it is not a bad film. It’s a great movie, it’s a great movie!
All right, before I turn to the endless epithets of admiration, which, as you know very well, ask for their own language after watching a good movie, I will try to explain myself to you. The first thing that hooked me in a good way in the movie “Remember everything”, perhaps, the plot. It is interestingly confused, at some point you do not understand what is happening in front of you, but this only creates intrigue, and the fact that you are confused is the idea of its authors, which really works. During the first half of the film, viewers are forced to literally rethink what they have just seen. A truly original plot, full of interesting and confusing tricks for the viewer. Definitely there is no chance to understand all this tangle of plot on their own, without watching the film to the end, which, you know, is a huge plus.
The second thing I can’t help but mention in the film, because I’m a slasher lover after all, is the brutality of the local shooting scenes. "Remember everything" - action movie is not in the first place, but, nevertheless, the film pays a lot of attention and action. Special thanks to the makeup artists for putting the murders on "hurrah." Not cardboard men fall to the ground, as in many militants - even famous ones, but really corpses with characteristic "tunnels" from bullets on the body and blood splashes in all directions. Really cool, spectacular and dynamic shootouts give us that part of the film, which is an action movie.
Drama? She is practically absent in the film, but, following what is happening, it is impossible not to experience with the main character the situation in which he fell. By the way, due to the fact that he lost his memory on the plot, the film also contains several comedy scenes, which I will not disclose details. In fact, in films, memory loss is often presented as a curiosity, serious films sin with this, and “Remember Everything”, without jokes, is a rather serious movie.
What's amazing, for me personally, as a sci-fi film, "Remember Everything" is a weak film. Here you need to understand one thing and come to terms with it: the main thing in the film is the plot itself, many moments of which exist only for the sake of creating and maintaining the atmosphere - you should not think about something otherworldly, and you should not. This is the kind of fantasy where you should be primarily concerned with the characters and their experiences, and not something detached from the foreground. Paul Verhoeven did not for nothing shoot “Robocop”, where the action itself is at the forefront, and the surrounding world is just scenery, when replacing which the essence would not change by an iota. Intellectually, I realize that perhaps with the novel For You We Can Remember Everything, things are a little different. But I have not read this novel, and therefore I have to be content with its adaptation, of the arbitrariness of which I do not doubt.
Verdict. Movie tour into the golden past of science fiction. Not so technological for our days, but so interesting that until the end of the film no one will let go. Trust me.
Many in the late 80s and early 90s liked the action movies with Arnold Schwarzenegger. That “Terminator 1 and 2”, that “Conan the Destroyer”, “Commandos”, “Predator” and other films with his participation. But “Remember All” became truly one of the most iconic fantastic blockbusters in history!
In the film, we see how the life of a simple hard worker Douglas Quaid changes. At first, he lives an ordinary life in a nice house, with a wife of model appearance, satisfied, in general. But human nature is such that he always wants to try the new, the unknown. Doug Quaid is no exception. He decides to apply to a special company that provides services for changing memory and creating illusions. After this appeal, his whole life turned into one continuous chase and finding out who he is now.
The film is absolutely amazing. What are only species of Mars, automatic robot taxis, and life itself on Mars? I especially enjoyed filming in a bar on Mars, as well as a woman with 3 breasts, which was something new at the time. Verhoeven's hand is clearly felt here, probably only he would have enough imagination to remove such a thing using rubber materials.
But it's not just the delights of Paul Verhoeven that made the film. The film is simply magnificent for 1990 special effects and visual range. Much is worth noting, especially the landing on Mars of the main character, as well as the ice melting reactor just looked amazing, and especially can be noted the scene with a machine for brain scanning, from where Quaid managed to escape, and in addition, killing all the guards, as well as the main villain Kohagen, who sells oxygen on the planet. Especially this episode manifests itself when filming on the elevator, where the main character deals with the villain, and so spectacularly that at first this episode with hands was not childish. And what Quaid did in the cab looks good even today. In terms of dynamics, drive, action, combat scenes, the film is just wonderfully shot. Especially the Martian part of the movie. I am silent about the bug in the skull and about the reactor for terraforming the planet, this is just a brilliant execution of the director’s idea.
I can say a lot about the actors: there are many star personalities. This is Schwarzenegger, and the famous Rachel Ticotin, who played Quaid’s partner very well, as well as the young Sharon Stone in all her glory. And, of course, the main antihero played by Michael Ironside played for all 100. But, of course, a special place in the film, of course, Schwartz. Without him, all these chases, fights and the film itself would not have succeeded. Arnold Schwarzenegger is a great actor.
It is worth saying that even today, viewing this picture occasionally on VHS, you are surprised at how well the picture was shot. Many scenes of this film look relevant and quite acceptable even today against the background of stamped characters from the comics. After all, it should be borne in mind that at that time computer graphics was not as developed as it is now, so more time was spent shooting in the pavilions, rather than drawing in 3D MAX special effects, as most do now. Therefore, the director and the film crew have great respect and fame for creating a film for all time.
My opinion: a masterpiece for all generations, especially for the generation of the 80-90s, but young people should definitely watch this film who has not watched.

If you’re an ordinary working-class person who can’t afford a real trip to Mars, you can always use the services of an artificial memory company. Here is our main character and goes to this company, which with the help of drugs revive real memories, in which he is no longer an ordinary guy, but a super agent, who is hunted by the Martian authorities.
Judging by the slight nostalgia felt when watching, the film can already fit into the classics of fiction, and I want to note that it looks still worthy.
In general, a good fantastic action movie about the world of the future and about the situation with the development of Mars. The idea of selling air where it didn't originally exist was a worthy movie idea, and Remember Everything did the best it could for 1990. Invested money, hired great actors, built impressive and believable scenery of the world of the future and the world of the red planet. It worked out.
The works of the American science fiction writer Philip Dick are quite difficult to film successfully, because many of them the author wrote under the influence of hard drugs, transferring his hallucinations to the texts. Fantastic action movie “Remember all” is still the best adaptation of the works of this writer, because the director of the film was Dutch troublemaker Paul Verhoeven, the features of the directorial style of which are excessive violence and sex. In this film, Verhoeven remained true to himself, filling the tape with erotic background and bold scenes of violence, many of which the director had to soften in favor of censorship in order to avoid obtaining an NC-17 rating.
The story of Doug Quaid (Arnold Schwarzenegger), who decided to travel to another reality and discovered that he is a completely different person, whose life is far from routine, is told to the viewer with a sweep and unprecedented special effects. A beautiful script by Dan O, Bannon keeps in suspense, and unexpected plot twists will bring great pleasure to fans of quality action films and thrillers of the 90s.
In this picture, Schwarzenegger revealed himself as a good dramatic actor, having managed to embody the complexity of the character of Doug Quaid, who got into a difficult situation. Sharon Stone perfectly played the typical role of a femme fatale in her career, which is of great importance in the intrigue of the film. Michael Ironside once again impressively played the villain, creating one of the most memorable antiheroes of the 90s.
The special effects and camera work of Jost Vacano are still admired, and therefore I recommend seeing this picture without exception.

After watching it, you don’t know what the cult of 90 is all about. On the one hand, because of the famously twisted plot, “ageless” special effects and cool Arnie, the film is reluctant to perceive it as a simple, but high-quality fantastic action movie, since throughout the film, the authors of the film want to get an answer to the main question: Who was Douglas Quaid really? An ordinary builder who was implanted with artificial memories or was a government Martian agent who lost his memory. And the reality that surrounds him is really reality or a dream? But because of the understatement of the film’s authors, the film remains to be perceived as just a high-quality cruel fantastic action movie, which it is in general. But then why was it so cool to confuse the plot - artificial memories, a trip to Mars, mutants, if in the end turn it banal action with a rating of R. and not give the answer to the main questions? I don't understand. The most interesting authors left to think the viewer.
From the point of view of the militant "Remember all" has all the components of the action of the 90s - the main character of the militants in the person of Arnold Schwarzenegger, excessive cruelty characteristic of Paul Verhoeven's paintings, dizzying chases and shootouts, as well as slightly thrashy, but high-quality special effects, time-suffered and an interesting plot. All this makes "Remember Everything" - one of the most memorable fantastic action films and a real, ageless cult of the late 80s and early 90s, which does not need a remake.
