A good film, telling the truth about not the most famous, but extremely important movement of football fans. They are usually not mentioned, except in articles about pogroms after the next match. And even then, nobody really cares who he is or what motivates them. Lexy Alexander on the contrary, tried to understand their motives and show them as ordinary people.
For better perception, we are introduced to the subculture very slowly and thoughtfully. The fact that the main character does not belong to the company allows the author to explain seemingly obvious things to the fans themselves to the general public. Also, this technique allows you to better associate yourself with the hero and see what is happening from an independent point of view. But later in the story when Elijah Wood becomes one of the members of the company. We can look at the fans through the eyes of one of them.
The film is distinguished by a qualitative plot, and expressive acting, and an honest display of the fans themselves.

- I'll take you with me, maybe learn something. - You mean the ball game? - No, mate, not the game.
The film “Hooligans” (2004) about the showdown of football fans was released in theaters a year later than the film “Fans”, shot on the same theme. Both projects were excellent in their genre. But, as you can see from the rating of "IMDb" and "KinoPoiska", the picture with Elijah Wood and Charlie Hunnam in the lead roles fell much more to the liking of the audience. And I think it's not just about the cast.
The story revolves around a Harvard student (Elijah Wood). Expelled from the university, he flies to London to his sister and meets her husband’s brother Pete (Charlie Hunnam), who turns out to be the leader of the group of fans of West Ham United football club. This is where the young man’s acquaintance with the world of obsessed “football lovers” begins.
Hooligans is not a movie for the faint of heart for many reasons. And the abundance of violence is far from the only one. Much more important here is the atmosphere, which sometimes puts pressure on the viewer steeper than any showdowns. For example, a scene where fans snooze a song in a pub, screaming at the throat and reaching to hoarseness. It is reminiscent of the battle cry/wild howl of the Vikings as they rush at their enemies waving axes and swords. And the quiet streets of London can at any moment turn into a battlefield, and stained with the blood of followers of another team.
The picture is shot, though cruel, but endowed with a deeper meaning than what may seem at first glance. And unlike "Fans," where everything is very gloomy, there is a kind of romance. No matter how strange it may be to call romance “wall-to-wall” muzzle, there is still a space between these “walls” that is not filled with anger and hopelessness, but with hope for something better.
One of the ideas of the film becomes clear towards the end of the final episode. Then you ask yourself, “Who is better?” Who looks more like a man? Looks can be deceiving. A beautiful apple can be rotten inside. What can we say if football fanatics, who often hit the faces of enemies, turn out to be not so bad guys who are not alien to love and friendship, compared to the newly slapped businessmen who did not care about everyone and everything. Who will not hesitate to betray friends and not even blink an eye. No, I'm not talking about being like Charlie Hunnam's character. But not in the same way that the roommate of the main character is shown here. Don’t go to the extremes of our diverse world.
The film only presents two sides, each of which has its advantages and disadvantages. And the main character walks along a narrow path that is somewhere in the middle between them.
'Thinking that only the death are forever young...'
Film 'Hooligans from the Green Street'- about prejudice.
“More than the Yankees, only cops and journalists hate here,” Pete describes the situation to a weak-knuckle, Harvard journalism dropout, Matt Buckner, before entering a bar and joining a fan party.
In this case, we have a stereotype that all Americans are goats, and all journalists are rats.
In the case of Matt, a prejudice is revealed that a person expelled from college, without a girlfriend, sluggish, soft-bodied, in short, a total loser, cannot be successful at least in something, cannot grow and succeed.
But the director in an excellent way dispels our stereotypical thinking with the help of soulful play by Elijah Wood: the actor managed to convey an incredibly wide range of emotions, it was interesting to watch the growth of the personality and the formation of the character of the hero.
Great soundtracks, especially the famous ending to Terence Jay – One Blood.
Nice painting.
It is surprising that a film about football fans of the club “West Ham”, which takes place in England – the birthplace of football – was shot by a director from Germany, especially a woman. Even though Lexley Alexander was a football fan herself in her youth, few believed that a woman would be able to make a real “male” movie, especially about British football hooligans. Oddly enough, you shouldn't. Although the main role in the film is played by the world-famous after his role of Frodo in the trilogy "Lord of the Rings" American actor Elijah Wood, most of the actors in the film are British, including talented, and at that time still little-known Charlie Hunnam, who in the course of preparations for his role personally met in representatives of the real group "West Ham" - Inter City Firm, and the script for the film was written by writer Dougie Brimson, himself in the past football bully. In short, having received an MPAA rating "R", under the slogan "Stand Your Ground" on March 12, 2005, the premiere of the film took place.
In the US box office, the film is called “Hooligans”, and the British name of the film is “Green Street”, so it is not surprising that in the CIS the film is usually called “Hooligans of Green Street”, combining the two titles into one. And in this case it is quite understandable, because, just as the title of the film combines two different titles, so England itself has always given birth to two completely different worlds. The world of knights-feudal lords and the world of peasant uprisings, the world of Dorian Gray and the world of Oliver Twist, the world of veneration of the English crown and the world of punk rock and anarchy. And this theme of duality and the coexistence of two contradictory worlds finds its continuation in Green Street Hooligans, where, against the backdrop of a capitalist state with centuries-old traditions, the fight between clubs takes place not only in the stadium, but also outside it.
One of the main advantages of the film is that it explains the very essence of the confrontation between football groups in England, but does not stop there, and gives the viewer a chance to see what is happening wider. Not limited to fights in the alleys and crossings and trips to the cities of the opponent, but resolutely expanding the scope and opening the eyes of the audience to brotherly relations between the members of the group, the problem of fathers and children, the problem of justice and dishonor, truth and lies, reason and brutal violence, real male friendship and betrayal.
Unlike the other cult movie about fans - "Football Factory" - in "Green Street Hooligans" much more clearly traces the motive of family and friendship not fans, but men. Of course, the film was not without Hollywood template (some moments in the story of the hero Elijah Wood), which, however, can be understood, because a large percentage of the audience of “KhZU” were Americans. However, against the background of the wonderful play of other actors, especially Charlie Hunnam and Leo Gregory, whose Pete and Bover are remembered best; stories that perfectly depicted the everyday life of British football hooligans, seasoned with English humor and, nevertheless, truly dramatic; a chic soundtrack, One Blood, from which still touches its unexpected lyricism, the shortcomings are almost invisible, and they do not cause much reaction, since the film is really interesting and does not distract the screen.
The movement of football fans has always aroused and aroused the interest of young people, and for most of them the only way to learn about the life of football club groups is through news, articles, books, movies. And if a young man, after watching the notorious “Factory of football”, will be filled with thoughts about life “from Saturday to Saturday”, heroin lanes with a toilet bowl in a bar, splashed out during the fight of hatred and the desire to destroy the enemy, then, looking at “Hooligans of Green Street”, will add to a wide range of new desires responsibility for their actions to family and friends, and try to understand what the road of a football fan can lead to, and was it worth it for you to step on?
Recently, I got acquainted with such a thematic tape of Russian production. It was the movie "Around Football." The film, to be honest, didn’t catch anything. I’m probably out of an age where it should be inspiring. On the other hand, what to inspire? Okay. Hooligans have long been in my sights. But, I began to look, mainly for the sake of comparison with the picture “Around football”. Many, in their reviews, called “Around Football”, an unsuccessful copy of the movie “Hooligans”. And you know, I agree with that. Let me elaborate.
The plot in the film is straightforward. It's clear in advance. Calm and harmless boy Matt, after dropping out of university, comes to London to see his sister. There, he meets the brother of his sister’s husband. Here we go. To write something, I do not think it is necessary. Further transformation of the character of the young man, in these circles of communication, I think you understand. After a taste of blood, it is difficult to stop. But I dare say it's possible. In general, the film, definitely, will appeal to fans and violent youth. My fists do not itch, so I do not find anything particularly attractive in this muzzle. Yes, and ways to “kill the beast” without that enough. More gentle ways. But I liked the movie. What is it? Your dramatic heartfelt note. It is, in my opinion, missing in the film “Around football”. He lacked some kind of instruction and proper morality. Therefore, the "Hooligans" look higher. Yeah. There is a good pivot of sad reality. There's morality. Also, actors are trying. The music is good. By the way, about some actors in more detail. Basically, all the key characters looked normal. But I will highlight the most memorable. Elijah Wood made a convincing statement. He's the one Frodo knows. He played his part well. Trust him. In addition, external parameters, the actor is also perfect. Charlie Hunnam fit in. There's nothing to pick on. Confident, a leader and an innovator. Claire Forlani did a great job. It turned out to be a very emotional character. Most of all, I felt sorry for her. At the same time, screen time, she fell a little. I think I'll mention Mark Warren and Leo Gregory. We played weaker, though. But they're still remembered. A few words about the cameramanship. She's not bad. We can’t say that the camera, always, correctly took the angle, but the main caught. As you can see, the main thing in this movie is fighting. But, fortunately, behind them lies a vitally instructive meaning.
In general, a movie that you can and should watch. I don't think I'd want to review it. But, the picture will definitely make you think. In the end, we need to take the right advice from this story. And, in any case, do not regard it as a call to mass fights and robberies. I'll put a solid seven. For the drama, the efforts of actors, music and a couple - three soured noses. School of Life, or Hormone Rage? It's up to you, friends. That's the end of it.
Honestly, the subject of football is far from me. And I, as a normal woman, fell for the names of the actors - Elijah Wood, still strongly associated only with the role of a hobbit, and Charlie Hannam - a brutal biker from Son of Anarchy.
A decent mix.
It's a great movie coming out. But not about football, but about guys who need to prove their point with their fists. Who are the most common hooligans who come to matches to fight. Very close-knit hooligans, standing behind each other mountain.
But as everywhere - betrayal, deception, unjustified hopes.
In the end, we have to watch. And those who love dramatic films with long portrait shoots, and those who want to see a large number of fights and bloodsheds.

"Green Street Bullies." I'll tell you right away that the movie is an amateur. They say that this film is "boyish" and is unlikely to like the girl. I may be a weird girl or that theory is deceptive, but I really liked this movie, very much. And after two days, I realized that this film should be added to my list of favorite movies.
The plot of the film is quite interesting. It is about Matt, who was kicked out of college, who soon became friends with Pete, who at the time was a football hooligan of the West Ham United team.
This film is about football hooligans and their quarrels and fights between hooligans of other football teams. In general, I don’t agree with these fights, I don’t understand the meaning of them (I was told that they defend the honor of their team, but my opinion is that the team defends its honor on the field), but despite this, the film impressed me deeply. “Green Street Hooligans” is worth watching, even for those who do not like such genres.
I can’t say anything bad about the actors and cast. Elijah Wood and Charlie Hunnam played very well. It was especially nice to see Elijah Wood in a different way, not as Frodo from The Lord of the Rings, but as Matt, a football hooligan.
I don’t think it’s a shame to spend 1:49 of my life on this movie. I love this movie and watch it a lot.
For thousands of years, all the peoples of the world had special rites and rituals called initiation. They marked the transformation of a young man into a man, his socialization, the full acceptance into a society of warriors and hunters. Initiatic rituals were sometimes extremely severe, even cruel, and included the following actions: isolation of the young man from the family and placing him in a special ritual place, intoxication with some narcotic substance, exposure to various tests, for example, boys were buried in the ground, or put in cages suspended from trees, or tied to a pole and left without food and water for several days, often they were beaten, cut off parts of the body (the foreskin, phalangue, little finger, hair), shocking, teeth. The trials could be so severe that some simply did not survive them - died in the process of initiation, while others did not survive and remained forever at the bottom of the social hierarchy of the tribe, below women and children. But overcoming all the trials and surviving boys became equal members of the community, warriors, acquired a new name, the right to hunt and marry, a voice at the meetings of the tribe, that is, they became full-fledged men - earners and protectors.
This has been the case throughout archaic societies from ancient times to the present day. In modern modernized societies, initiation is almost completely lost, remaining in rudimentary form in the rites of Christian baptism, Jewish and Muslim circumcision. To be considered a man, a boy no longer needs to be subjected to torture and trials. The boundary between childhood and adulthood today may be associated with the first sexual experience or, say, with military service, but these actions are not sacral-ritual in nature, and therefore can not serve as an explicit expression of initiation.
Actually, that's right, that's right -- child abuse is not acceptable. But there is also a reverse, not quite pleasant side of this attitude: most seemingly adult men do not become either adults or men (ie, breadwinners and defenders), remaining infantile adolescents until old age. Add to this the modern tendency to suppress male aggression and assertiveness in every possible way, imposing from childhood on an unusual manner of behavior for boys (dolls instead of slingshots), as well as the notorious tolerance and political correctness, and you get a situation where, for example, 40%, if I am not mistaken, German men (descendants of militant and formidable Germans!) would prefer to be... housewives, that is, like sitting at home, doing homework, like washing, cleaning, cooking, going for food, watching tearful TV shows. It is believed that service in law enforcement agencies and professional sports contribute to the development of a real male character, but what to do with the rest?
Another problem: no matter how to mask aggression, pugnacity, toughness and other “boyish” properties, they do not disappear anywhere, but only hide deep in the psyche, breaking out in the form of outbreaks of unmotivated violence (family violence, including), mass fights and murders, psychoses, neuroses, manic states and other unpleasant phenomena.
A simple solution to this problem is to take and redirect the aggressive energy of the most passionate representatives of the stronger sex into some neutral channel, so that they do not get involved in crime, and revolutions do not suit. An example of such a decision is football fan clubs, the so-called “firms”, and their semi-legal situation, when the authorities, as it were, do not approve of the self-harm they commit, but also do not suppress their activities harshly, they say, let each other be maimed rather than civilians. And the members of these "firms" are not some scum, but quite ordinary people, in their free time - decent workers: teachers, guards, sellers, couriers, office workers, pilots, etc.
Well, from America to England comes a young man, a kind of mama's son, a divine dandelion with huge innocent eyes. At home, he was offended, Harvard was kicked out for nothing, his future journalistic career was ruined. And he, grieving, ran to his sister to cry in the apron. Although, in vain, I am, in fact, a normal, good young man: intelligent, kind, cheerful, honest, decent, intelligent, but only too soft, insecure, unable to stand up for himself, to prove his point. If he hadn't come to London and met Pete Dunnam, he would have stayed that way all his life, and all sorts of rich scum would have pushed him into the background forever. But meeting Pete changed Matt forever.
Because Pete Dunnam, unlike Matt, will be able to stand up for himself, and will not give others offense, for nothing that a bully; you look at him, and believe that this guy will never cheat, betray, do meanness, will not commit, will not leave in trouble, he will remove the latter from himself, but he will help a friend, he will not humble himself with injustice, he will not cowardly and will not flee, he will sacrifice himself, but he will save his own. He would explore the seas and oceans, discover new lands, but, as they say, the times are not the same. Although he is good in his place: such a teacher (um) of history and physical culture can be safely entrusted to children - he will not teach them a bad thing, on the contrary, he will educate them with real men, and it is unnecessary to talk about the fact that the guys probably adore their teacher. In combination, Pete is the leader of one of the fan "firms", where he leads Matt, apparently, pitying him and deciding to "teach life."
Everything that happened to Matt Buckner after that is a spontaneous initiation. Judge for yourself: isolation from the family is, intoxication with a narcotic substance (specifically, beer) - as much as you like, pain is obvious. All the conditions for initiation have been set up, and it's up to Matt how he behaves. To his credit, I must say that Matt withstood all the trials with dignity, showing considerable courage and courage. As a result, he became a strong, self-confident man who can stand up for his principles and will no longer allow scoundrels like Jeremy van Holden to ruin people’s lives. Still calmer when good has fists! Of course, this does not mean that Matt will become a notorious bully, or a football fan, or a super-duper hero, most likely not, but he will not shame Pete Dunnam’s good name.
P.S. What does football have to do with it? - That's right, nothing to do with it.
When you get a couple of punches and realize that you are not glass, you want to see how far you can go.
It happens that you look for “what is it to look at?” for quite a long time, for hours, you do not find anything at all suitable and continue to sit on social networks until you go to bed; or after a long search, you watch the film you chose, but it disappoints you, after which you immediately lose your mood due to wasted time. But it also happens that in just a few seconds, spontaneously, you choose a movie to watch, and after it is over, you remain completely satisfied, shocked, motivated, whatever. Hooligans joined such films in my list today, which in just 110 minutes caused a sea of emotions, amazed and laughed, frightened and gave a lesson in philosophy.
This film tells us about a modest guy named Matt Buckner, who was expelled from Harvard for possession of drugs that he did not store, just set up by a respected roommate, against whom he could do nothing. Arriving in London with his sister, the husband of the same sister introduces him to his brother, whose name is Pete Dunham. For some reason, Pete is forced to go to football with Matt, not wanting it with all his heart, but still he introduces him to his company and they all go to football, after which Matt witnesses the quarrel between the fans, getting involved in this fight. He becomes more confident, discovers the meaning of the words “Friendship” and “betrayal”, which here go along the same road. He changes his worldview, modesty fades into the background. But what good can this senseless struggle bring? . .
I am very glad that in recent months I have come across such extraordinary films that make me think, nervous, empathize, envy some moments in the lives of the main characters, think and think; films that make thoughts run in different directions and do not understand how to treat whom and why exactly this happens! The movie is really worthwhile, touching, sad, frightening, filled with some energy, which at the end of the viewing keeps the viewer between the two shores of the state of mind - despair and joy. You are happy for Matt, in whose life there is a true friend, for the fact that he was able to overcome insecurity, opening up to people. But also throughout the film I hate this stupid movement of fans who kill each other for empty principles; annoying this injustice reigns around the characters. I didn't know if I was against Pete and Matt dating or not. On the one hand, it changed the life of the main character - brought both happiness and unhappiness; on the other hand, it is endless beatings and beatings that bring grief and failure! A sea of contentious thoughts. The sea of mistakes of the heroes, which the creators successfully exposed, showed all the disadvantages of this way of life.
Well, I want to say that “Hooligans” is a strong, moral, criminal film that causes a sea of emotions, contradictory feelings, sadness, longing and at the same time satisfaction with a drop of joy and inspiration. Controversial thoughts, yes, but this shows life, and it can not be painted on the points, you can not guess. There are few actions in the world that bring only a positive effect: as they say, there are two sides to the coin, as the Hooligans showed us. You hate all the characters, you empathize with them, you rejoice for them, and the friendship of Matt and Pete can only be envied, a friendship that defeated all the prejudices of football fans and knocked all the nonsense out of your head. The actors are good. Not so want to praise Charlie Hunnam (who perfectly entered the image of a bully, but still with these features of the face and a short haircut it was easy for him), as Elijah Wood, the hero of which from a small frightened bookworm in front of the audience turned into a confident, faithful and, we can say, a scuffle. A great movie that deserves to be praised!
Despite the fact that I am a fan of English football, ' Hooliganov' long did not want to watch, although many friends have long recommended.
I had many reasons: first of all, I live in Moscow, and there are many members of different football groups among my friends, and I am a frequent visitor to matches, so I know that really terrible things often happen in fights between fans. I expected the film to be full of gangster romanticism, that fragile children’s minds would look at such things and want to be a part of it, go out against other bullies & #39; fight not for life but for death and consider it the norm. There, even movies about it are made, it is not terrible.
As it turns out, the expectations partly coincide with reality. Another thing is that in the film, in addition to the advantages of such groups - a common idea, a real brotherly unity, mutual assistance, also shows the negative sides. There's betrayal, and death, and the possibility that even yours & #39 may turn against you. As a result, if the tape praises the fan movement, in particular, football hooligans, then it reflects the danger of this, the terrible and irreversible consequences.
The second reason was my prejudiced and hostile attitude towards Elijah Wood: which Frodo is a football fan? However, I was wrong, because he played well, and fit into the role extremely well.
Actually, the movie is very beautiful. Excellent camera work, acting, correctly placed accents in the script. By the way, the story turned out to be quite snotty, and pathetic speeches were present, but a tear broke, and at some points there was just incredible tension when you try not to even move until you find out the end.
So, I am glad that I was finally able to appreciate this work, because this is a masterpiece, a film on such a narrow topic can be liked even by those who have never watched football, however, this story is very sincere and true.
Maybe it can be attributed to the first strong impression, but now my assessment of this film:
10 out of 10
I wrote a review a year and a half ago, but found only now.
Let’s make a reservation right away – I am not a movie lover, I understand little about cinema and do not act as a film critic. Everything written here is pure emotions and new impressions that overwhelm me completely. There are so many thoughts that it is difficult to choose where to start.
The reason for this little upheaval in my brain is the feature film Green Street Hooligans. I had heard about this movie before and finally decided to watch it.
The story begins with a spectacular verbal skirmish of football fans, and then we see an unexpected pirouette in the fate of Matt, the main character of the picture. These two scenes at the very beginning seem completely unrelated to each other, but later it is clearly shown that these people turned the worldview of the main character. Matt was an ordinary young man, but changes in life - moving to the UK, new acquaintances pushed him head-on with the so-called informal culture.
Representatives of this subculture are called football hooligans - they are ready to shed sweat and blood, tear veins and break bones for the honor of their team and themselves. In England, this is quite typical: football is the second religion for many and therefore there are enough opponents for all sorts of battles.
Although this hooliganism for some is the first religion, these people are simply insane in their ideas. They play football and make the most expensive bet - the life of a stranger or even their own.
The film ends quite definitely, but there are several scenes after which it is time to put the end. After these episodes, we see the protagonist enriched spiritually and stronger morally.
“Green Street Hooligans” surprise with their realism – the actors, the scenery and the game itself look absolutely monolithic and harmonious. Every detail immerses the viewer in the great London – mostly poor houses, urban suburbs, wastelands and pubs, but there is also a scene of the traditional view of the British capital – the Thames and Tower Bridge. In the film there are elements of many genres – the drama with elements of an action movie is diluted with lyrical and comedic scenes.
The film is high-quality, and I think everyone will find something for themselves, find interesting thoughts. I saw new evidence that “the best leave early” and, of course, “all is well in moderation.” You can do a lot and as one of the characters said: “When you get a couple of beats and you realize that you are not glass and you want to see how far you can go...” – so play, play! – but sometimes it does not stop you from thinking that it is dangerous to flirt too much.

All girls love bad boys and all boys love football. Every football club has a group. Fans who love their club loyally. We are caught in the storm of events. The life of the young people of London. In one of these companies is Matt Buckner. It penetrates into the thick of things. In all the showdowns and carnages that take place not on the fan, not on the personal level. This film is about boys who love their job. They love each other, they care, they trust each other. This film is about revenge, about pain, about suffering, about loss and loss. This film is about how shaky borders that can not be crossed.
The cast is magnificent, the game is amazing, and the soundtrack is above all praise. My only choice is to watch.
“Trust. You always said I trusted people too much.
From the first minute of viewing, I was tormented by the feeling that this is the most ordinary film about football fans. And besides, the film began with a blatant injustice that happened to the main character. Yeah, it's been worse than ever. However, the film made me absolutely delighted when I realized the deepest essence.
A young journalist, almost graduated, can be said to ruin his life, covering the back of the son of another politician. He's not even trying to fight. And it is at this point that he meets someone who will soon teach him to "defend his position." Defend your position as a man, even at the cost of your own life.
The film shows us an exceptional character, masculinity and self-sacrifice, which is inherent in everyone, but not everyone is able to reveal it in himself.
The film makes you wonder what I personally think is a good indicator.
I first watched this film two years ago, and I confess, it did not impress me - a gang of football fans periodically arrange fights with other gangs and so the whole film. I looked and forgot. And yesterday something pulled him to reconsider, I don't know why. And after the second review, I completely changed my original opinion.
The movie was about friendship. About a real, strong, male friendship. A film about how to value friends and take care of family. About the bitterness of betrayal, about repentance, about how to forgive. Real nobility and self-sacrifice. The director masterfully managed to show all this through the prism of relations within a separate group of football fans.
Guys from this group will do anything for a friend, they never leave their own. They are not afraid, they are not shaking for their skin. They're free. In this environment, and gets quiet Matt (Elijah Wood, I love you!). It is this atmosphere of freedom that attracts him in the first place. His new friend Pete (a separate bravo to Charlie Hannemu) shows him a whole new world, the existence of which the downtrodden Harvard student did not suspect. Having become a member of the OIE, having fought for the first time, feeling the support of comrades who stand up in your breast to protect you, Matt changes before his eyes. Matt at the beginning of the film and Matt at the end are completely different people.
Every actor, every hero, every episode is in its place. Remorseful traitor Bov, insanely loving his wife Steve, unhappy, driven to the extreme Tommy. All of them together form an integral picture of what is called life.
Summary
If you are with us, you will not run, you must defend your position.
I put off watching this movie for a long time, because, despite the fact that I love football, I did not expect anything special from it. Only after watching the film, I realized how wrong I was - after all, it really deserves attention.
It all begins when Matt Buckner, an American student, is kicked out of Harvard and moves to London to meet his sister, where he meets her husband’s brother, Pete. Pete is the head of the West Ham fan football firm, Green Street Elite. He takes Matt to football, but he is a fan of the Nsu York Yankees and has no idea about "playing ball." That's where it all starts. I will not retell the whole story, because it can be read in the description.
The film takes, first of all, its purely English atmosphere. All these narrow streets, pubs, club anthems greatly affect the quality of viewing and drag to such an extent that it is impossible to come off. Acting also deserves special attention. If we take in general, no one fell out of the picture, managed to create a harsh and very tough atmosphere. Elijah Wood – perfectly evolved in the course of the film from a shy, fearful nerd into an ardent participant in fan brawls.
Special praise deserves Charlie Hunnam, who played just fine! He perfectly succeeded in the role of tough, daring, charismatic.
And the fearless leader of the Green Street Elite. All of these qualities are in him. Bravo. I also liked the fearless and crazy Leo Gregory, the role was less important, but very bright and high-quality.
A very beautiful film that opens the eyes of the viewer on football. Oklofootball hooligans are the elite of football. In this film everything is accurately and correctly shown. There have been similar riots in England before. A great movie that makes you think about friendship and betrayal. A movie can teach you a lot.
Charlie Hunnam did a great job in this movie. I think he was a football hooligan in the past. He played his part so well. The plot of the film is just great. Everything was done at the highest level. The film draws from the first minutes of viewing to the final credits.
The musical accompaniment in the film was also very much liked, the music was selected very well. This film can be re-watched many times and it does not lose its interest. In my opinion, the ending of the film was instructive. It doesn’t always work out the way we want it to.
Without a doubt, this film is worth watching and learning a lot about football hooligans. There are no flaws in the film, I really liked it. I give this film the highest rating. Hooligans are a high-quality and very spectacular film.
This is a film that leaves a serious mark. Of course, nothing to do with football. The film could be made about the life of street gangs, about the life of biker gangs, about the life of fans of any other sport.
For me, first of all, a film about growing up. Every growing man sooner or later will face the need to set priorities. And, of course, every guy living with risk and adrenaline sooner or later, growing up, will be forced to choose a pack or a family. Whatever he chooses, he is entitled to it. But, having made his choice, he must be faithful to him.
Is it about friendship? Yeah.
Leadership? Yeah.
Honor? Yeah.
Are these values of life? Absolutely.
This is an adrenaline-drenched animal movie that makes you think a lot. But the thing that struck me the most was that there are no right-wingers or culprits. Usually, when we see gangs/people/ideals on screen, we know exactly who is right. It shows life on one side of the barricades. With the same success could be made a film about those who were on the other side (I am about the father who lost his son in a fight - he could also be served by the main character of the drama, but completely different: about revenge, about the pain of loss ...).
Of course, we empathize with the heroes of the film. They know what honor is, what betrayal, repentance and true friendship are. But it cannot be said that this is the standard, men without fear and reproach. You can't give that kind of assessment to gang members. But the film is not about how high their ideals are. It is not worth discussing what they sacrificed and risked their lives for. You just have to look at the formation of the character of Matt, at the leadership of Pete Dunham, at the incomparable throwing of Bover, at the fate of Steve Dunham ...

The film “Hooligans” is one of those that leave an indelible sense of belonging to what you see on the screen. In the media, topics dedicated to football fans are found almost at every turn, showing the next footage of bloody brawls between fans chanting the anthem of their favorite football team, for whom the world is conditionally divided into those in blue and those in red. Such a sight always causes fear and awe, and a terrible desire to be part of this large-scale rampage.
Surprisingly, it was the woman who managed to embody on the screen the unique atmosphere of the English confrontation of fan groups, touching on the difficult topic of relations between their participants, built on the concepts of friendship and honor. Lexi Alexander also managed to get away from banal love stories, which allows you to feel what is happening without being distracted by various romantic manifestations from the main characters. However, Lexi’s merit is not only in this, thanks to the exclusively female approach, all scenes of muzzle and violence did not resemble a rehearsed stunt performance, but looked like from around the corner of his own house. Thus, skillfully balancing between drama and crime, it turned out such a real spectacle that grabs the soul at every viewing.
Thanks to the film, the world also saw a matchless actor in the person of Charlie Hunnam. His daring image, an extremely self-confident and fearless leader, nevertheless, evokes only respect, and I sincerely want to believe that somewhere there are really prototypes of such personalities. As for Elijah Wood, the image of Matt is something very similar to Frodo, modest and quiet, but as it turns out, too stubborn and persistent. So another goal in favor of Lexi Alexander and her team.
"Hooligans" is a story told through the eyes of an ordinary guy who just crashed out of Harvard for falsely accusing him of drug use. This is the view of an outstanding history teacher, who is also the leader of one of many such associations. This is a brother and father tragedy. This is the truth of life, woven from the fates of its heroes, for someone the end, and for someone the highest measure of justice. We are all “hooligans,” we all have to stand up for our position.
.
They are simple British guys: not majors, not Yankees, not poor people, not journalists. Their passion is football (not soccer, remember, otherwise you’ll never be yours), or rather what happens after exciting matches. To defend the ideology of the group, to beat the enemies, to fight in the name of a fight – their credo. And finally, it’s fascinating to watch.
Yes, at first glance they are just a gang of bandits: noisy, not shy in expressions, aggressive young guys - in our, simple words - cattle. But is it so bad to have meaning in life, even if not shared by everyone? Maximalism accompanies them in undertakings, hormones bubbling, the desire to feel alive, made of flesh and blood prevails over other instincts. At the same time, some manage to be history teachers in the mornings in elementary schools, and in the evenings to defend the honor of their team with blood and sweat, even if it happens exclusively at their own will, which is meaningless from the point of view of a sane person.
The film is in no way going to read us morals, and especially not put into propaganda - it just shows the everyday life of crazy guys - and wow, it's really interesting! Real male friendship, a sense of unity that arises during fights, betrayal, revenge for what was once foolishly lost, the rethinking of life by some heroes is not a complete list of what can be taken from “Hooligans”.
Charlie Hannam is wonderful. Once again I see his reincarnation, this guy is not afraid to try on a variety of images, and he is also damn attractive, a kind of “bad-good” guy with his own principles, which invariably attracts the opposite sex.
References to Fight Club, some resemblance to City of God are obvious advantages for me as a genre lover. Thank you to the UK, thank you to the director (who, by the way, is unexpectedly a woman), thank you for the atmosphere of involvement in what is happening, energy, drive, cheerful soundtracks and a neat note of tragedy. Great movie!
Hooligans is a great film that tells us about the difficult everyday life of football fans. And at first, I didn't understand how Elijah Wood would fit into the company of bullies. But after 30 minutes of the film, I realized it fit perfectly.
After Matt Buckner is expelled from Harvard, he goes to London to visit his sister Shannon. Later he met her husband Steve and his brother Pete Dunham. And it is Pete in the whole family and is a real football fan. Pete’s life is full of violent fights between fans, full of fun and football. And it so happened that Matt became friends with Pete, who in turn took him to his team of bullies.
You can’t help but praise Charlie Hunnam’s great performance (Pete Dunham). He is a very suitable actor for this role. In the film, mass fights are very competently staged, and in general everything is very cool. The first time I watched without interruption, because the film keeps to the end both the plot and the play of the actors, in general. From the second and third viewings, after some time, I again received only positive impressions, and I am sure that I will watch it more than once. I can confidently say that “Hooligans” was included in the list of my favorite films.
And although the film is quite funny and dynamic, do not forget that this is primarily a drama, because courage and carelessness never bring a person to something good.
In conclusion, I will say only one thing, if you have not seen this masterpiece, do it and you will not regret a minute of wasted time! The film is very worthy!
The important thing is not that you can always cover for your friend, but that your friends can always cover for you.
I'm not afraid to say that better than a film on the subject of football, no.
Here we see everything: from male friendship to father’s love for his son.
Pitt is the character who makes you fall in love and regret that it was just a movie. His courage, fearlessness and leadership qualities make him extremely interesting. From the very first episode, where he appears, the film acquires a certain vigor and passion.
Matt is a typical American who was unfairly thrown out of Harvard. Once in the company of Pitt, he throughout the picture is consistently reincarnated from boy to man. In his expressive eyes, the viewer can read devotion, sympathy and despair.
Bower added the missing paint and painting. Eternally energetic and hot wolf in the pack, who is not afraid to express his opinion. He is guided by rage and anger, which then turns into regret and a desire to make things right. The actor has played a brilliant role.
The opposition of fans of different football teams is simply incredible. The picture teaches patience and sober rationalism.
It is impossible not to fall in love with these guys, charming hooligans!

Someday there will come a time when you will consider family relationships to be your best reputation.
A greenhouse boy from Harvard flies to England and joins one of the movements of football fans. He doesn’t take it seriously at first, but over time it becomes an important part of his life.
Of course, the events do not look too plausible - the guy has never fought, and here is one of the members of the street gang, for which fights are the main component. But if you omit this error, the film deserves the attention of the viewer.
The cast is decent, some even appeared in other films. The original plot, after all, is not a banal crime drama with some drug dealers. Everything is not even bad – the picture pleases the eye. And of course, in the course of the film you will find a few surprises, reserved by a clever director is also a plus.
For fans of football and people eager to see the original crime film or drama - suitable.

I only watched the movie “Hooligans” because Elijah Wood is in it. I decided to close my eyes during fights, and if the film turns out to be quite “hooligan” – I will turn it off altogether. But, it turned out (relax, girls), it is not so much scuffles, and the film dragged on.
The general impression is that it's weak. Why? First, the same fights. In their production there is neither originality, nor dexterity, nor beauty, nor even cruelty. Even I, an inexperienced person, felt some kind of falsity in them. People rush to push each other (you can’t pick up better definitions), picture swing their hands, stuffing the opponent’s face, and then quickly run away. Our heroes with bloody faces go quietly to drink beer, as if they were not wounded, but just doused with red paint. Could this be the case in English?
Secondly, the ill-conceived scenario. The idea of the film is good. It has a tie, a climax and a denouement. And most importantly, meaning. But the actions of the heroes that determine the course of further events seem inconclusive or devoid of logic. For example, Matt's quarrel with his sister and her husband, Matt and Pete's sudden friendship (why are they called best friends?!), Shannon's arrival at the meeting place with a small child (it would be better if the police squad called), etc.
Thirdly, the pretentious scenes and phrases that your friends can always cover for you, etc. did not make a special impression. Probably, it is not only in a bad filmmaker, but also in acting. Pete Dunham (Charlie Hannam) is the film's most striking character. But takes not so much acting data as charisma and personal charm. Playing himself. Matt Buckner (Elijah Wood). The hero causes neither sympathy nor antipathy. No fish, no meat. Nothing from the beginning to the end of the film. Whether Wood is talented is a controversial issue, but it seems that in this film he does not even use the skills of a professional actor. Well, he is not mounted in a duet with Pete, well, does not fit into the company of football fans. It doesn't spoil the picture, though. Best Actress: Mark Warren. Plays brother Pete, and part-time - the former leader of the "firm". In ten minutes, he managed to fully reveal his character.
But there are also positives in the film. First, the dynamic of the narrative. Of course, this is a matter of personal perception, but I didn’t notice any sagging of the plot, although there are only five main characters.
Second, atmosphericity. All these English pubs, fan chants, football clubs and their support groups were new to me.
Third, morality: participation in such groups sooner or later ends in a bloody denouement, there can be no happy ending.
If anyone is interested, you can watch the movie. It's my assessment.

This is my favorite movie after which I asked my friends to watch it. I love football, but I don’t like football movies. . . That's not what I expect in these movies. At least Nike’s Guy Ritchie will have to make these films for the best dynamism and effect that comes from this best sports game in the world. But the Hooligans movie is the exception.
This is a film about England, their football and their fans. After watching this movie, you are convinced that England is the birthplace of football. At first glance, the film seems ordinary. Without special effects, pulling hundreds of thousands of dollars, and the cast is not so deadly. But if you immerse yourself, understand, comprehend what is happening on the screen, then you begin to understand that this is a great movie!
I'll start with the main character... Elijah Wood. This is the only game I liked about him. Alas and ah, but his play in the Lord of the Rings trilogy infuriated and annoyed me. I also want to mention Leo Gregory. His performance after the bar fight made me very happy.
The plot is absolutely delightful. The ending makes you sad, some let down a tear, etc. The directors in the film perfectly portrayed the football match in all unprecedented angles. It was interesting, dynamic. The film shows how football fans live in England. These are not the scumbags who throw firecrackers at players and beat all the innocent on the street and on the subway. These are people who have a job, a family, after which they become even more humble and calm.
Hooligans is a story of friendship, showing that completely different people, regardless of their preferences, can go side by side to achieve their goals.
I am more surprised how a director manages to make such a great film in every sense of the word. You have to watch this movie!
And not even about the fans, not about the quiet boy and his becoming a man. A movie about values. In my opinion, “Hooligans” is an excellent work of Lexy Alexander. A dynamic plot, good old England, the absence of all sorts of love lines, which are perfectly replaced by another, more life-affirming lyrics - these are the components of this picture.
I didn’t want to talk about “b” actors. For if I say that they are all well-chosen, I will be disingenuous. In principle, few characters are remembered in the film, perhaps only Pete (Charlie Hannam), Matt (Elijah Wood), Shannon (Claire Forlani) and Bover (Leo Gregory). Of course, there is a heartbroken and intoxicated with a thirst for revenge father – Tommy, and Major, who once resigned, but this is another story.
Shannon is on the memorable list because she is almost the only woman in the picture. In general, Forlani from film to film shows the same thing, but for some reason it seems to me that it is not her fault, just over time, a certain role has developed, which the writers do not tire of feeding. If we talk about “Hooligans”, then no, Claer did not shine here. Bover, as for me, one of the brightest characters in the picture. I don’t even want to use words to describe his character. However, such characters with some regularity appear in different films, but I must note that Leo Gregory perfectly coped with this character. Charlie Hunnham as Pete was beautiful. And it's not the pretty face that probably makes a good half of women think about Hannam at night, it's Charlie's charisma. He's a great leader, bad guy with a good heart, that's probably his role, and let it be that way, he's good at the roles, he's great in them. And finally, in my opinion, the biggest mistake of the Hooligans is Elijah. He was so organic at the beginning of the film, such a sweet, such a good boy. But what he's turning into next, alas. No, it's a great role, but it's not for him. Everyone understands that Matt must become a man bold, daring, tough. But Matt managed only to wander around the city with the blue eyes of an innocent maid and a claim to rigidity in his eyes, ridiculously smoking and still waving his fists worse than a girl. I don’t want to offend anyone, but I don’t even know what you can play with such a face, since even a hobbit came out a hell of a thing. The movie didn’t make it any worse.
As for the director’s work, it was good, it was very, very good. No confusion. Even numerous fights are filmed so that you feel the scale of what is happening, but you do not have to rewind and see who was put there.
Sound series was also very good. Very organic and appropriate soundtrack.
The only question left after watching is how Matt was allowed into such a chic restaurant (or hotel, I can’t remember) in “sports”? But this scene did not smear the impression.
In general, the film turned out to be atmospheric, partly philosophical, terribly courageous and very, very strong.
This film is one of those in which, despite the negative behavior of the characters in general, you sympathize with them and worry about them. After all, they are all really hooligans, who do not need anything in life except fights. They are not particularly interested in football deeply - winning or losing a team is just an excuse to kick the other team's ass. They are not interested in their own future, although they all work.
The film follows a storyline about two brothers – so different and so identical at the same time. And despite their differences, they love each other, try hard, do not abandon in trouble.
The main character is a confused young man who, by the will of fate, was lured into the dubious company of these hooligans. But it is in this “group” that he understands where the truth is and where the lie is, who are real friends and who are enemies and so on. The result is an ambiguous ending, which is worked out quite well.
The actors played their roles very well. Charlie Hunnam has eclipsed Elijah by a hundred. My personal opinion. In general, the film is not bad and it can be revisited more than once and every time with tears, not in the sense that the film is so bad, but because you want to cry from such a realistic injustice, which is full of life, although not so cruel.
A cruel film that I am sure will be remembered for the rest of my life. Soaked in blood and fights, the film penetrates into you, into your very essence and into the depths of your soul. You can’t watch this movie with a normal expression. All the time events develop, all the time interesting. You wait every second. Even though I watched this movie tonight, I never yawned, I was so interested. Perhaps one of the most interesting films I have seen so far. I, a lover of blood, fights, punches and football, it may not be very pleasant, but it is terribly interesting to watch this film masterpiece. This is an ordinary movie, about ordinary guys and men, a little about ordinary football, but about such intercession for friends who are no longer like friends, but as brothers, in which you can give your life for another person, hit your opponent so that he has to be taken home. I can’t look at them with a calm soul, but when you get into the essence of this film, when it captures you, you begin to realize that this movie is not only about fights, you begin to realize what friendship, family and love mean in your life. A well-made film with a good plot, with great actors, with really the right lines, in general, I was pleased. Perhaps all my complex sentences are not enough to describe what happens to me after watching. This film is (at the moment) in the top 250 of the best films and I think it is for good reason; there is a place for this film and I hope that this film will remain there forever.
I don’t need to talk about acting, I think that from my praises everything is clear, but still I will write about it. Acting is one of the factors in the success of the film, probably the most important factor. If the plot of the picture seems great to everyone, but the roles are recruited by talentless actors, then the film can become a failure. It’s a shame when filmmakers die like that. So, this film masterpiece is not “dead”, on the contrary, rose above many films. Elijah Wood, Charlie Hannam, Claire Forlani, Leo Gregory, Oliver and James Ellison – these actors I really liked. They played so great that I thought I was watching a chronicle of gang life. You should have seen their beautiful smiles, and then not very beautiful fights. You should see the feelings and emotions they expressed.
It's all about stupid football.
Here are some quotes from this movie.
I just don't understand you. Why, you Americans are like that. You start wars, then you regret it. And then we have to get your ass out. (c)
The main thing - do not arise. And then maybe everything will be right. (c)
We do not leave ourselves to our fate. (c)
- Get out of here.
-What?
- There are twenty of them.
As long as you're with us, you're not going anywhere, you're going to stay here and fight.
- I can't fight.
- Just think about someone you hate. (c)
They had a clear advantage. But as we stand for each other, we are not afraid. (c)
And you know what the best part is? The important thing is not that you can always cover for your friend, but that your friends can always cover for you. (c)
Perhaps these words can convey something to a person. What will these words, this film, convey to you, when you watch it, these heroes, maybe cruel, but loving their friends, rooting for football teams and smashing faces, to those who are against them, you will only know by watching it. It is better to watch this movie and think about a little unusual fates of the characters than to watch some vulgar comedy that will turn off your brain and you will not think about anything. I believe that as bloody, violent and, to some, even disgusting as this film is, it deserves your attention. And whether you like it will depend on you and on many factors, while watching this film.
I put this film in the Favorite Movies folder because it's worth it. Bravo!!
Just my heart was squeezing from the fighting scenes, but I close my eyes.

Millwall vs West Ham. Now the actors, as for Charlie Hannem in the role of Pete, praised him for good reason, he really played brilliantly, but I was indelibly impressed by Leo Gregory in the role of Bower, he is bright throughout the film, his play and facial expressions are pleasant to watch, he is a highlight of the acting ensemble. Wood played well, but no more, maybe I just can't praise him. And certainly want to mention Tommy Hatcher, who came out surprisingly charismatic, aggressive and really looked like a leader, instilling terror in the camp of rivals. The plot and the end of the film are also at a high level, the work of Dougie Brimson is visible, fights with moments of pain and gatherings in pubs and the storyline of the film itself are perfectly combined. Very well shown the spirit of brotherhood and unity in the company, from the mouth just asks the famous motto: "One for all and all for one!". Naturally, a good film is not complete without colorful episodes, which in this film is also enough, which is only worth the ending (a delightful soundtrack) and Bover strutting over Pete's body, and such memorable episodes in the film are still a lot. All football fans will enjoy this film, but its main value is that it will appeal to people far from football culture, in general a very high-quality and good picture. 10 out of 10 Original
A German woman, a film about English football fans. There are too many wind directions for one movie called "Hooligans". Although calling the director Lexy Alexander too feminine will be fundamentally wrong before finding herself in cinema, she actively put on gloves and hit pears in different gyms.
Most likely, the director of the film has a fist in his head familiar firsthand, moving at a young age in the United States, she even managed to take part in several tournaments with karate and kickboxing. The film is close to football, but it is not about football, a film about the life of fans, but not in the stands of stadiums and their competition with songs. This is a film about the confrontation of fans on the street.
Director Lexy Alexander made a rather rare film on its subject, such a genre is not a frequent guest in the movies, and if you actively watch football matches, and after the final whistle you rejoice or pour your grief, somewhere it is likely that there is a mix between fans. And one part of that mix loves the football team as much as you do.
In principle, the director presented his idea exhaustively, football bullies can be understood, but the conditional limit of such love for the team is not clear to all members of such groups. And the story of the main characters of the film "Hooligans" is a clear example of this. I liked the acting, liked the well-constructed script, this film was cynically not seen by film critics, and he may be that understanding of the limit, which very often passes football fans.
When you get a couple of punches and you realize you're not glassy, you want to see how far you can go. (c)
There are paintings that are constantly advised to you, and you drag along with the viewing and put them in a distant drawer. One of them. The abstract causes ambivalence, because if you are not a fan of football, do not fully understand the meaning of such fanaticism to the game, there is a logical conclusion that this is not for you. However, at the end of the vision, everything in my head turned. Awesome drama. Everything is shown from the inside out and basically only social aspects, human relations.
For me, it was a tape of one actor, because there was some charisma in Pete and he stood out from the others. The tragic denouement saddened, although not an amazing ending to his story, it was painful to watch it. Before that, I had no pleasure in seeing Charlie Hunnam in other roles, but this role clearly succeeded. It seems rude and arrogant, and sharp, but somehow catchy. And on his part, like the guys of his company, it was not a stupid obsession with the game, it was protecting his interests and loyalty to what he once managed to love for some reason. Pete is brave, strong and principled. In love! He's a tough guy.
Elijah Wood here is so timid, innocent. At first, it was heartening when he called football “playing the ball,” and Pete was angry. And then how it changed when he opened another world, tough and aggressive.
The family of Steve and Shannon gave some emotions when watching. Such love among people, such a reverent attitude and affection. In theory, it should not seem strange, because not so long the union, but after the birth of a child sometimes the spouses cool to each other, but not here!
The Ost is great. Especially when it comes to fighting. When you hear it, you can't sit still! Overall, this film will be remembered for a long time... Dynamic and diverse in the palette of feelings arising when viewing the work.
