I am part of that power that eternally desires evil, and does good. Marcel Carnet's "Evening Visitors"
The film is a parable, on eternal themes such as life and death, good and evil, and of course love.
Marcel Carnet, a classic of French cinema, the director who opened Jean Gabin to the world, the first of the few French filmmakers to be awarded the Imperial Prize.
And just a few words about the film that before the picture, everything was worked out to the smallest detail, the film can literally study those times, interiors, clothes and so on, /however, according to the memoirs of the director, everything was filmed from afar, not that everything was simple, costumes and interiors are beggars, actors were starving / that before the rest, relatively above, the film was shot at a very difficult time, during the German occupation and taking into account the German censorship, / at that time, Carnet was almost the only director who did not emigrate from France /.
“In the month of May, one thousand four hundred and eighty-fifth, the devil sent two messengers to earth to bring despair to the entire human race.”
Now, walking the earth, these same messengers disguised as two minstrel brothers, Gilles and Dominic. In their path stands the castle of the Baron of the South. The castle is just finishing its wedding preparations. The Baron's daughter Anne marries the Knight Reno. But, after the performance of the false brothers, Anna falls in love with Gilles, and Reno and the old Baron Yuga, /also devilish spells helped / fall in love with Dominic. That would have been enough, but Gilles also fell in love with Anna. He fell in love and decided to give up his mission. To somehow resolve the situation in the palace is the Devil, his own person.
You can interpret this film in different ways, (for that it is a parable) as for me the film is far from politics, (except for the politics of thinking about the eternal questions of existence), nevertheless the film was recognized by the people as anti-fascist and calling for resistance. The reason for this is to see the Devil as a loser, with whose machinations you can not only fight, but you can and must win. Of course, much depends on time, time does not choose, but great, and not great works of art reflect their time. And the fact that for posterity looks like a naive fairy tale, for contemporaries it sometimes carries a serious subtext. Viewers at the time believed that Anna was France, and the devil was fascist Germany. Who then is Gilles, perhaps conscience, or perhaps the highest justice?
Or maybe rock, / when nothing is just like that / otherwise from where the good will come. Or maybe rock has nothing to do with it, you just have to think, learns from mistakes, your own and others, /learn the history of God /, live according to people, /according to conscience /.
And then maybe everything will add up, everything will be beautiful, everyone will be happy. As much as possible, but still.
You will ask, “What is it?”
Look around you, I will answer.
Just look and you'll see.
