Only he knows what it takes to be the world’s greatest birder.
"Big Year" is a light comedy, with good meaning and, importantly, in an original interesting entourage.
A film about competition, raising the eternal question of price for victory. Participants compete in counting birds: those who see more species of birds in North America in a year will win. But what are the competitors willing to do to become not just good, but the best?
“Big Year” combines two very important things for a good film – interesting, original, little-known themes and, at the same time, the vitality of situations, motives and events are inherently understandable and close to a wide range of viewers.
Cute actors also add positive emotions - no curvatures, but watching them is fun.
This is a movie that is always a pleasure to watch. And due to its lightness and a good share of humor, it fits any mood, and thanks to the thoughts embedded in it, it is not an empty sight.

The film captures with its soulfulness and simplicity. The cast was delighted. There are at least three reasons to watch this movie.
The first is Owen Wilson, who knows how to make the audience laugh in any genre of cinema. Jack Black is an outstanding comedian who can turn any film into a farce (in a good way). Steve Martin, familiar to us since childhood, perfectly fit into such a professional team.
Two: Unusual story, speaking for myself, I have never heard of such a race for birds. In my opinion, the idea is a little unfinished, in the 21st century to take the word? The characters didn’t always take pictures of birds in the movie, maybe that’s just my misconception. But whatever it was, it was a charm movie. Charming birds for every taste, colorful colors are replaced by pastel tones. How rich our natural world is. The film gives you an idea of its diversity, about which a person does not suspect. Before I saw it, after I read the description of the film, I thought, ‘Did anyone make a movie because of 100 to 200 species of birds?’ Such competitions push people to feat. Discover something new, break away from your usual place of stay and just enjoy life.
Three: These different characters ended up being connected by the game. At the end of the race, they drew conclusions, someone gained and someone missed something important. The main thing they were united by one cherished dream. The problems that stand in their way look so real that you believe in them. When watching, I experienced the difficult path of bird lovers, what a thorny path they go in search of these pets to capture rare species for a couple of moments and go on to search for new ones!
For evening viewing, the film will fit perfectly, just what you need before going to bed. Take a break from the bustle of the day, laugh at good jokes, observe nature and just admire.
"Big Year" is the unofficial name of an unofficial competition between amateur ornithologists, which is held annually in the United States. The winner of the competition is the one who sees and hears the most birds, it is desirable to capture them. And for 365 days a year, bird-obsessed adventurers cross the U.S., watching the movements of different species of birds. This is the basis of the comedy melodrama, called “The Big Year”, which is quite natural. Filmed her Oscar winner for best short film David Frankel ("Dear Diary in 1997), who, however, is more famous for his work with the TV series "Beauties", as well as for the films "The Devil Wears Prada"" (2006) and "Marley and I" (2008), in which the main role was played by Owen Wilson, also starring with Steve Martin and Jack Black in "Big Year". Among other familiar faces in the film are Rosamnood Pike, Brian Dennehy, Diane Weist, Kevin Pollack and Angelica Houston.
The film is based on the autobiographical book of Mark Obmashik, a participant of just such competitions. The main screenwriter of the film was Howard Franklin, best known for the films “The Name of the Rose” and “Novel with a Stone” (although in this case it was not listed in the credits). And it tells the story of "Big Year" about three completely different people. One is Stu Pricesler (Steve Martin), a successful businessman who tries to retire and take care of his favorite birds, but his job does not let him go, unlike his wife. The second is Kenny Bostic (Owen Wilson), a bird-obsessed record holder who sees them as a priority while his family life is split. The third is Brad Harris (Jack Black), a disillusioned 33-year-old man, divorced and hating his job, who knows how to determine by the subtle shades of sounds what kind of birds these sounds belong to. All three of them during this “Big Year” will have to put emphasis in their lives, understand what they are closer to, find themselves and their way in the future.
Honestly, the correct designation of the genre of this film is still melodrama. But the melodrama is unconventional – there is no romance, except for the love of our birds. In the film there is a purely male competition, chasing a record, the desire to be first, to prove to everyone and everything that you are worth something. Therefore, we are presented with three main male characters of different ages with different kinds of occupations, different views on life. Not everyone gets support, but someone gets more than expected. So it turns out that “Big Year” is not only a photo hunt for birds, it is a male melodrama, where there is a place of love, friendship, and in general a lot of good things, although they will have to come to this after overcoming several barriers that have become the main ones in their lives. There will not be a set-up here, which you can expect, because three comedians play in the film at once, they are unlikely to make you laugh in the Big Year, rather the heroine of Angelica Houston will be funnier than all of them combined, but they, it should be understood, had a completely different task in the film.
Steve Martin, the most respected actor from this film, has recently not pleased us with his new roles - the 70-year-old actor, screenwriter, writer and musician decided to take a break, engaging in close literary and musical activities. “Big Year” is his last movie role so far, but we’re really looking forward to his return, and the Hollywood comedy has lost a lot without Steve Martin. A nice and kind of "warm" actor causes a gentle smile when he appears on the screen. His main task was to show that it is necessary to be able to leave in time and devote the rest of his life to himself and his family. Owen Wilson knows how to play a few self-absorbed comoros. His job was to show that you had to decide what was more important to you in life, and even though I personally disagreed with him, Wilson also did the job. And Jack Black showed that you should never give up, and in pursuit of a prize you can miss something important, but you need to be able to look back and get back to something important. All three comedians showed mature wise play, filling their images with a philosophy of life.
I cannot say that with pleasure the revision of "Big Year", one viewing is enough to understand everything in the picture. But I will recommend it to a potential viewer if you consider yourself to be fans of Steve Martin, Owen Wilson or Jack Black: Your favorites will appear before you in not quite standard images. And you should also look at those who decided that comedians can only play in comedies.

The wonderful comedy film "Big Year" was expected by many fans of the genre long before its release on the big screens, because for the first time on one set the paths of such recognized stars as Steve Martin , Jack Black and Owen Wilson. It is worth noting that at the time of filming in this film, the famous comedians were experiencing not the best stage of their career, and therefore the opportunity to work together gave them a chance to reassert themselves as Hollywood figures that are worth considering. So Steve Martin knew the unfortunate failure of Pink Panther 2, because of which all thoughts about the third part of the adventures of the brave Inspector Clouseau were postponed until better times. In turn, Jack Black did not live up to his hopes in “The Beginning of Times” and could not rehabilitate even in the relatively good “Gulliver’s Journey”. And finally, Owen Wilson, after saying goodbye to the franchise “Meet the Parents” was in a state of creative uncertainty, looking for a project that could once again improve the level of his tarnished reputation. However, whatever setbacks Martin, Black and Smith may have had, one thing is clear: their participation in the filming always ensures that the film will be at least entertaining, and certainly not a failure in creative terms. And "Big Year" really pleases its viewers comedy in the good old style, without unnecessary vulgarity and unnecessary fuss. For such a heartfelt approach to the creation of the film, first of all, we must thank director David Frankel, whose melodramatic comedy “Marley and I” became a real event and won both critics and audiences. Unfortunately, Big Year failed miserably at the box office and could not recoup even half of its $41 million budget, which came as no small surprise to the public, producers and Frankel himself in particular. Moreover, the modern viewer will hardly remember what was discussed in the picture, which was born recently, in 2011. Such a course of things cannot but upset, and therefore it is worth describing the Big Year in much more detail in order to reveal all the strengths of the project and thus prove to the ignorant viewers that failures are often undeserved.
So, the plot of the film tells us about the extraordinary competition “Big Year” in which the “berders” compete from all over the United States. Long ago, in the 19th century, the English invented a game in which shooters hunted birds and at the end of a certain period had to present their trophies to the jury. The hunter who shot the largest number of birds and became the owner of the Big Year Cup. Over time, such a brutal competition decided to replace the usual photo-hunt, and it stretched for a year to match its name. The competition does not offer any special awards for the first place, but this does not stop enthusiastic observers, because fame is much more important for them than a fee with six zeros. Well, the most famous and revered “berder” of all time recently became Kenny Bostic (Wilson), for whom the victory in the “Big year” has become the main goal of all life. The hero went to his triumph for a long time and his patience bore fruit - Bostic became a real record holder, having seen the largest number of birds in one year. Only now stop on what he has achieved, he is not going to go hunting again in order to beat his own record and not allow competitors to eclipse his glory. And the rivals at Bostik picked up truly ambitious. So on the “path of war” came a retired millionaire, the founder of one of the richest companies in the United States, Stu Preisler (Martin), not used to give way even in small things, as well as a modest employee Brad Harris (Black), for whom “Big year” is the last opportunity to raise self-esteem and prove to the whole country that he is not such a loser, as it seems at first glance.
David Frankel didn’t set out to make his audience laugh. His picture first of all describes the fate of three completely different people who abandoned all outside affairs and went to conquer their dream. Of course, at the heart of the story is a fierce competition between the characters who do everything possible to get the trophy. Someone does not disdain dirty methods to remove competitors from the path, and someone on the contrary to the very end acts according to the code of honor, because sometimes it is not the final result that is important, but the path that leads to it. There are not as many truly hilarious moments in the film as we would like, but it does not affect the perception of the production at all. "Big Year" tries to show us in detail what drives Kenny, Stu and Brad in their quest to win. The tape of Brad Frankel is actually an instructive parable with small splashes of cute humor and brings to us the forgotten simple truths that need to be trumpeted for all to hear.
The story itself is conducted on behalf of the hero Jack Black, who is also trusted to read the voiceover text. Brad Harris, played by Black, is fond of birds from an early age and really admires them. Yes, his life is not smooth, and sometimes "birding" ruins his happiness, but at the same time "Big Year" is able to give his morale new strength. And it is not necessary to win, because true well-being lurks closer than it seems. Harris knows that others respect him only when he wins his crazy race, but he clearly does not intend to sacrifice his family for him and, perhaps, the love of his life.
Self-respect is also evoked by Steve Martin's character, Stu Preisler. The brilliant comedian plays a man who has already achieved everything in life that one can wish for and now he can devote himself to his favorite hobby. A millionaire can use unlimited resources to win, but he doesn’t because he has a spirit of justice and equality. Stu dreamed of winning the Big Year for many years, but the birth of a grandson, as well as a friendly acquaintance with a sweet loser Brad, open the eyes of the “shark” of business that victory is not always the first place.
And finally, through the prism of his character, Owen Wilson shows us how manic attachment can destroy a person’s fate. Kenny Bostic can't stop and just leave the Big Year. And it does not matter that his wife is waiting for him at home, repairs and even a child are planned. Winning the competition is what he needs first. For the sake of recognition, he is ready for anything and for the time being, does not notice his mistakes. However, even he will realize that his true happiness is not where he sought it. The main thing is that such awareness does not come too late.

Over the past few months, I have seen two incredibly enjoyable films. Considering how many films I’ve seen in my entire life, I think it’s a lot of luck. The Big Year is one of those movies. If Americans can make and act in such films, then everything is not lost for them. Rarely can you find a film absolutely without vulgarity and rudeness. Is the film based on a book and the book based on real events? But anyway, we got just an amazing soulful and kind film. It's laughter through tears and tears through laughter! It's both drama and comedy. These are beautiful landscapes, this is a huge variety, as it turned out, quite boring birds. The obsession of the heroes with bird hunting is transmitted through the screen, and you do not notice how you yourself get involved in the competition, experience with the characters and wait for the results of the game.
At the same time, the “Big Year” covers a huge number of problems and issues. The relationship of fathers and children, love, dream, meaning of life, friendship and communication, choice, community of interests. What to choose? What's the point of life? Do you need to follow your dream, no matter how “delusional” it looks from the outside? The answers to these questions we get in the face of three main characters - Stu, Harris and Bostic.
I like each character, each has his own story and his own understanding of happiness. It is a pity that not everyone realizes in time what is really important.

Love for birds, nature, and, in the opinion of most sane people - a completely stupid event "Big Year", which really takes place in America in the form of a run of bird-turned "Birders" behind each pichuk, occupies not the last place in the tape and does not interest the masses at all. To make a box office comedy, you need to cram ordinary people into an extraordinary situation, which, however, will be close to most viewers. Of course, the main message of the film is not in the pursuit of birds, but the competition itself was able to interest an extremely narrow audience, the mass viewer of the film seems to have nothing to present.
I love birds and many of them truly admire me, and, of course, I will not fail to grab a camera if I see a flamingo or a polar owl somewhere, but, of course, I will not take a vacation for this occasion, leave my family and forget about everything in the world. But this movie isn't about birds. For me, this film is also about the dangers of fanaticism in any form. Whether it's a job, a relationship, a hobby, as one of my teachers said, "No bigotry, guys, no bigotry." And after all, in the pursuit of a ghostly dream, which is not enough that it can be a puff, you can lose all the good that you have at the moment.
Men can’t help but compete – this phrase from the movie can make it a slogan, but in any competition there has to be meaning. Why are you doing this, why? How important it is - for what or for whom. From a true hobby that gives pleasure to an addiction that spoils your life - one step!
For the heroes of Martin and Black, Big Year was an exciting adventure, a way to break out of the long-term routine, for one - from the endless corporate meetings, where you increasingly feel old age knocking at the door, for another - from the boring, gray everyday life of an office clerk. But for them, being the best is not an end in itself, as for Wilson's hero. The journey is more important than the outcome. They're really curious, they really like birds. For Bostic, it is only important to be first always and in everything - it is more important than a pregnant wife, work, repairs in the house. His life was full of important and necessary events, and all these events he missed, being busy exalting his exorbitant ego. For Martin and Black, it was part of their lives and didn’t stop them from feeling supported by their family, meeting new people and sharing experiences. Eternally stuck in solitude Bostic, who abandoned everyone and everything for some ephemeral recognition, causes nothing but pity.
In the comparison of these characters, the morality of the film is born, the film itself is born. Being the best in total solitude is not that great. The end does not always justify the means. Sometimes, walking on your head, you lose your own. When you get to the finish line first, look around, maybe no one chased you. All this is openly read in the film, you understand it, digest it and believe it. The authors say this with knowledge and in a heartfelt conversation. It seems as if this topic is close to all actors – after all, Wilson, the favorite of the audience, in 2007 almost killed himself, Martin put his whole life on his career, and, having understood something, barely managed to get a child at the end of the sixth decade, and Black, who dreamed of losing weight to turn from a fat loser into a tough guy, just had to admit himself as he is, getting rid of drinking and drugs, and not from excess weight.
The whole film seems to say – whatever you do, do not miss the main thing, let not cover your eyes with the veil of ambition. The cost of their satisfaction may be too high. Those who have achieved everything, as a rule, remain deeply unhappy people - and the death of the all-powerful Stalin, for example, is proof of this.
Oddly enough, its message, the film is closest to the picture of the Farrelly brothers “Getting started”, although there are not birds, but bowling, there is all the same: the spirit of competition, a journey across the country, an ambitious villain-winner and “losers”, who found during the journey much more than the main prize-winner.
They found themselves, each other, Black’s hero – found a father and love, Martin’s hero recognized the inevitable old age and reconciled with her, convinced of the love and support of his wife, took a newborn grandson into his arms, made several important decisions. They didn’t break away from life, it was a really big year for them. And the “big year” of Wilson’s hero turned out to be a phantom in which the weak consolation for a broken marriage and complete loneliness became the first place in an unnecessary competition.
This is a charming, touching and uplifting film in which a trio of wonderful actors are incredibly truthful in their roles. I never cease to be amazed at Martin. A man in the cinema for 40 years, most of the stars of his generation either safely rolled, or plays small roles - on the backup. He is still the main character of comedies, not knowing serious defeats. Winning this year’s long-deserved Oscar, he seems to be out of fashion. And in this film, he pleases not done, but sincere good nature, especially when he picks up his “grandson”, amazing ease, incomparable with age, some charm. Now Martin is not responsible for crazy episodes in the paintings, but rather for ironic, warm notes, slightly brightened by a smile. Martin is very good, and just after this picture he took a timeout in his career. I guess I understood something too.
"The Lighter Boy" Jack Black is sadder than usual, but also truthful. His hero in life is generally a complete despondency, and the guy regains his life - he does it fun and relaxed. There's chemistry between him and Martin. They have a duet, in the sincerity of which you believe unconditionally.
Owen Wilson is good against them, too. He is not an antagonist in the usual sense. He is not a scoundrel and does not do nasty things, the only big thing he did to himself. Wilson is beautiful both in the obsession of his hero and in the final shots, when he looks with unspeakable sadness at the departing couple with a baby in a wheelchair. The man who lost everything.
This comedy is not shocking, shocking or even trying to please. It is simple, elegant, not to say that brutally funny, but very pleasant and good-natured smile and, how to say? - environmentally friendly. The director managed to resolve the situation without offending anyone from the star cast: there are three completely equivalent roles, no one pulls a blanket, everything is played and staged perfectly. Of course, it is a shame that he failed, but, putting his hand on his heart, he does not belong in the current box office. The current heroes of comedies smuggle drugs, drink in Vegas to the point of unconsciousness, shoot home porn, turn into vulgar grandfathers and obscene bears.

Despite the initial external unattractiveness of this creation, the film has a very unusual plot clue.
The film is very kind, albeit naive and not serious.
But very beautiful landscapes, calm and sweet.
It was very unusual for me to watch Steve Martin as a touching pacified grandfather.
Family values, mutual respect and love of children and parents – this permeated the whole film.
But the main advantage of this picture, I see, of course, with a slight stretch, its painlessness and not harmful to our younger generation.
Children and teenagers love movies very much, and this creation is certainly not ideal from the point of view of morality, but in comparison with modern "horrors for children" - this is a great entertainment.

Ornithological film for everyone, except those suffering from ornithophobia
Only Americans could make a competition out of contemplation.
Are we going to compete? What is the meaning of a “big year”? This is an informal competition in which participants need to see or hear in the natural environment the largest number of birds in North America in one calendar year.
Don't put off the big year
In the center of the plot is the story of three Birders (birders – “birders”): Stu Prissler (Steve Martin), Kenny Bostic (Owen Wilson) and Brad Harris (Jack Black) – who decided to take part in the competition “Big Year”. The script is based on the novel of the same name by Mark Obmachik, which, in turn, is based on real events. Kenny Bostic, the winner of the competition, decided to break his own record. But what he doesn't yet know is that the head of a major corporation, Stu Prissler, and the job-hating Brad Harris have also set their sights on "The Big Year." Ignoring their personal lives, all three are passionately drawn into a contest that demands total self-denial.
The film reveals themes: obsession, misunderstanding, problems of father - son, husband - wife, boss - colleagues.
The first thing that caught my eye, as a person who saw America only from postcards and cinema screens, is that there are many beautiful places inhabited by no less beautiful birds. And there you can see hummingbirds and polar owls, one of the most beautiful birds.
In addition to the cast, it is also necessary to highlight the director David Frankel, known for the films Marley and Me, The Devil Wears Prada.
Behind these manic “rat races”, the director carries the theme of what is worth living for and what can be lost if you blindly go to victory.
This is a rare good film about what we sometimes do not notice. It doesn’t have a lot of jokes, but the movie is positive and makes you smile all the time. If you want to watch the birds, don’t be surprised. You don’t have to go to America, you just have to look out the window.
The director of this picture, David Frankel, has a quite decent background ("Marley and I, The Devil Wears Prada, Brothers in Arms) in order to, if not categorically assert that all his creations are good, then at least honor the new film with attention. Although, I confess, in this case I was tempted not by this remarkable fact, but by the presence of Owen Wilson among the main characters.
I’m probably very biased, but I haven’t seen any bad movies with Owen in the lead role. He can be stupid, charming to the screech, ironic. And in "The Big Year," Wilson is gambling and literally obsessed. To be fair, he's not alone. Two other recognized masters of the genre - Steve Martin and Jack Black - for the time being are not inferior to the character of Wilson, and even surpass in terms of the desire to win a competition that normal people seem to at best cause a condescending smile, and at worst (like the father of the hero Black) - condemnation and misunderstanding.
There is no need to look for a very deep moral in this film. The main message of the director here, most likely, boils down to one thing: in the pursuit of a prize, we sometimes forget what and for whom it is really worth living, spinning, running, winning and competing in this life - clearly not for the sake of ephemeral glory.
I generally like these funny movies, where the sadness passes by.
The Wilson-Martin-Black trio is very good. They are all very different in age, style, manner of play. They have different bargaining chips. And that's great.
Beautiful nature, beautiful birds, crooked Owen Wilson and a relaxed atmosphere.

"Big Year" introduces its viewer to such a unique phenomenon as birders. In Russian, they are lovers of bird watching. Simply put, these are people who are sick (in the view of a layman who lives in front of the TV) who are able not only to recognize hundreds of species of birds by appearance, but also by voice. Moreover, they know how to talk to birds. And these guys are spending money, wandering around the country, in order to see as many species as possible and win the Big Year.
In general, the film can be considered quite frank propaganda of many universal values: from fair play to family priority. I can’t say that she is too frank and deliberate, but she is clearly visible. To be honest, it’s hard to scold the film for the good.
"Big Year" is a very good movie about sincerely passionate people. A pleasant cast, magnificent landscapes and birds, a decent level of humor in every sense. And the main message is that when you realize that you can not catch two birds with one stone, you should not hesitate for a second to choose the main one that will stay with you for life.

In our rough and lustful age, it is rare to find such a simple and cute film. The “Big Year” was a pleasant surprise for me. Of course, it is difficult to call it a comedy, because jokes here are one, two and screwed up, but the style itself, sustained in the spirit of the good old comedies of the late 80s, sets it up exclusively in a positive way.
The idea of the film looks very fresh, which is a curiosity today. However, the authors did not squeeze the maximum possible out of it. Beautiful landscapes, many exotic birds and a good acting - that's all the advantages of this film. But this is enough to lift the mood on a gray weekday.
I want to talk about Owen Wilson. I am a huge fan of this wonderful actor, and I was doubly pleased to see him in this simple, but at the same time soul-warming film. And then, frankly, after the terrible “Criminal Week”, I was already beginning to be disappointed in old Roy O’Bannon.
Yes, and thanks to the authors for a good intrigue - until the very end it will not be clear who will be the best edger in the world.

A big year attracted primarily by its cast, as both Jack Black and Owen Wilson I treat with sufficient respect, appreciate their work, especially since this plot pattern, in my opinion, is not so much dragged down.
To be honest, I do not imagine whether there is an analogue of the big year, shown in this film, or whether it is pure fiction of the writers, but it is not so important for this film.
We have at our disposal three heroes: the owner of the unbeaten record to this day and two contenders for the title of “best of the best”. As the plot develops, they naturally get acquainted, and their competition gradually develops into a real friendship. But it is not only the birdwatching that lives the tape.
Gradually, the reverse side of the medal of chasing a world record is exposed, periodically all the characters face a choice: whether to continue by all means to achieve the realization of their cherished, but selfish dreams or to direct life in a more creative direction.
It is a pity that at the box office a big year failed, apparently, the United States is waiting for the humor of a purely toilet environment, and comedy with some morality is doomed to early oblivion.

After the trailer, I expected a lot more from the movie than I got. And the colorful poster liked (especially the little parrot, funny peeking into the binoculars of Steve Martin).
I tuned in to something very funny and something very funny. But I saw something ordinary (I don’t think I even smiled once).
At the beginning of the film, we talked briefly about what a “big year” is. What they said in the pictures. For general development, it was interesting to learn that in the early 20th century there was a competition among men who shot more bird species. And that some kind soul suggested the option of not shooting at birds, but capturing.
I wanted some incredible adventures, like in "Pretend to be my husband" ("You can not kiss the bride"), some mind-blowing chase, like in "Rat Race". Or comedic situations like "Pretend to be my wife." But nowhere, again, did I smile.
Nowhere did I worry about the characters, but only did that I was indignant, why Bostica (Owen Wilson) throughout the film is exposed as such a negative character. Just because he's a favorite and record holder? I was rooting for him from the beginning. He was the only one who knew what he was doing. I was really interested in birds. While the other assumed that he was on vacation, and the third was proving something to his father.
But every comedy has its own dramas. And the one that was Bostic (with his wife) was the most... dramatic.
In addition to some empty events, the film was not liked by the fact that the hero B. Jack, on behalf of whom the story was conducted, was forcibly exhibited by some hero. It was annoying somehow...
Quite unexpectedly wonderful film. Yes, there is an indisputably excellent cast: neither in Black, nor in Martin, nor in Wilson as comedians, there is no doubt in principle. There are beautiful female characters of the second plan (one favorite Rosamund Pike is worth it). Here is a wonderfully selected light and unobtrusive music. And even the fact that the idea, so similar to some "Red race" or something like that, does not cloud at all.
Because:
First, there is no gram of vulgarity, toilet humor or idiotism inherent in many comedies;
secondly, there are stunning landscapes, which so begs for viewing in some hd on a huge screen;
And third, of course, the sea of birds, a variety of species, colors and sizes. A real paradise for those who are not indifferent to birds. This is a film about birds, about bird lovers, about bird lovers. This is probably the only way the movie is shown, but
I love birds. Who doesn't like them?
Of course, ten. One of the nicest discoveries of the year. For the credits - a separate plus.
The film is very intrigued immediately from reading the annotation and a short trailer, as well as a budget of $ 48 million and almost a year of delay of the Russian premiere, in the end to see it in a good translation happened only in September. But about everything in order and here are 5 reasons to watch this funny movie.
First, a brilliant cast, all the favorites in the collection - Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson - a rattling comedian brigade, plus for dessert my favorite Rosa Pike (Doom, Fracture, Education of Feelings) and Cindy Busby (Diary of a weakling).
Secondly, this is an unusual plot and the plot of the film, analogues among the movies I have seen about the competition of bird lovers I have never seen. In general, about animals and birds.
Thirdly, these are beautiful shots of quite real and stunning landscapes of different parts of the world and the feathered heroes themselves, there are at least 752 species of birds (so much the hero of Owen Wilson found). By the way, at the end of the film, along with the credits, all kinds of birds show and list, a kind of bonus to all amateurs and ornithologists.
Fourth, it is the moral side of the film, family values and love for relatives, wife, parents, friends. Although in general the film is comical, but very touching and instructive.
And in the fifth, it is excitement and concern for the main characters, hope in their success and luck, who will win the competition, the purpose of their lives? You will learn about this by watching the 80-minute exciting film product of the director of hits Sex and the City and The Devil Wears Prada. I wish you a pleasant view and stock up on popcorn.
So often it happens that a boring and inconspicuous at first glance movie after watching leaves a very positive mark in the soul.
Comedy "Big Year" - the film is not very funny and "laughs", but in general - very good and, forgive me for naive terms, kind.
Honestly, I did not expect such pleasant impressions from this seemingly banal plot. The story of bird lovers who travel across America in order to set a new record in the number of birds seen in one year. Against the background of such an unusual hobby, a simple, ironic and moderately funny story about different people, their priorities and life values is revealed. Look interesting and exciting, the smile does not come off your face: you travel with the heroes of the film, watching the most beautiful birds and delving into the quirks of human life, friendship, rivalry and selfishness.
In short, this is a pleasant comedy without unnecessary absurdity, idiocy and vulgarity. Not from the category of “rusty”, but one that just lifts the mood and gives an occasion to think about life values.

Every year in the United States held an unofficial competition “Who will see more birds in a year in the States”. And everything is based on honest word and no documentary evidence of the bird is not required. However, you don’t even have to look at the cherished bird if you can identify it by singing. This competition has its own champion, record holder, king (as the voiceover constantly calls him)! Kenny Bostic saw 732 species of birds in one year, which is a world record. A few years later, he has a couple of worthy competitors, try on the title of champion in this dubious competition. Thus, the film shows the lives of three people, or rather a year in their lives, in which they took part in the "Big Year" - that is how this bird championship is called.
The atmosphere of the film is beautiful. So kind, nice, cozy. The plot is quite unusual, although the problems that prevent three brave heroes from watching birds for their pleasure have already been touched upon a hundred times before. The geography of the shooting is amazing, even if the operator gave them a smart one, and then Lawrence Scher missed so many beautiful shots. Well, for me, a very important role was played by the acting trio - Black, Wilson, Martin. The guys just played a good fool. I always would. Jack Black is not a fart at all and gave out a charming chubby who wants to leave a trace in history. Owen Wilson is a stubborn fanatic. Steve Martin once again played the father of the family, grandfather and his boyfriend. And a bonus for fans of the series will be the appearance of Joel McHale, Rashida Jones and Jim Parsons. That’s how everything is simple and unassuming, a light film that is perfect for passing the evening (or morning, as in my case).
