Impressive with its scope of battle scenes and many units of various military equipment (tanks, artillery, aircraft, military trucks), the film tells about one of the most failed operations of the allied forces during the WWII - the so-called operation "Garden" ("Market Garden"). The idea of the director to show the absurdity of this military operation from the very beginning to the end is unconditionally commendable, but the film itself turned out to be a little ridiculous. Firstly, despite the scale of the operation, the real fights in the film are quite small, a lot of attention is paid to the landing and the display of military equipment (the episode where the character of M. Kane drives along the road and a column of tanks stands all over). Here, the director is far from Ozerov’s films. Second, the length of the film, almost 3 hours of continuous action, is a bit tiring. Thirdly, a lot of ridiculous moments like the German officer (I think, played by M. Shell) who "holds out" a chocolate bar to the British captives - what a nobility! Talks about a ceasefire for the sake of evacuating wounded soldiers are not worth discussing at all – this is definitely a complete distortion of reality. Overall, the film leaves a good impression. Separately, it is worth noting the galaxy of great artists involved in the film. Where else will you see together in a movie by Sean Connery, Michael Cain, James Caan, Laurence Olivier, Anthony Hopkins, Robert Redford and Gene Hackman?
