Miranda Otto was born on December 16, 1967 in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, in the family of famous actor Barry Otto. Mother after the birth of her daughter, who received the name of the heroine of the play by W. Shakespeare “The Tempest”, refused an acting career and became a costume designer. Miranda Otto studied ballet, wanted to become a nurse, but still followed in the footsteps of his parents. She received a professional education at the prestigious Australian theatre school NIDA, where at one time studied Mel Gibson and Judy Davis. The actress made her film debut in 1986, in the film Emma's War, and noticed her after the film The Girl Who Was Late (1991). Then there were roles that were praised by critics, but the films with her participation were not widely distributed. In Hollywood, Miranda Otto, who has worked successfully in Australia for ten years, was noticed after small roles in Terence Malick’s The Thin Red Line (1998) and Robert Zemeckis’ What Lies Hide (2000). She was assigned to the lead role in the film “Being John Malkovich”, but she failed to act – the producers received consent to cooperate from Cameron Diaz. However, later producer and screenwriter Charlie Kaufman invited Miranda Otto to play in the comedy Animal Nature (2001). 2002 marked the success of Miranda Otto - she played the role of Eovine in the trilogy "Lord of the Rings" by Peter Jackson (for which she was engaged in horse riding and sword fencing for six months) and played in the thriller "Under Hypnosis" and in the drama "Julie Goes Home" (for this work, the actress was awarded a prize at the Newport Beach Film Festival). In 2003, the third part of “The Lord of the Rings” and the comedy “Denny is a Flying Chair” were released, in which Miranda Otto played with Reese Eifens, with whom she starred in “Beast Nature”.
