Coleman began her professional career as part of Prince's band The Revolution during the recording of his album Dirty Mind and subsequent tour. She collaborated with the musician from 1980 to 1986. After that, she began to perform in a duet with her friend, musician Wendy Melvin, with whom she composed the duet Wendy and Lisa. They have released five albums, as well as written for film and television in particular, for the TV series Sister Jackie, for the soundtrack to which they were awarded the Primetime Emmy Award.
