American actress, winner of awards “Oscar” and “Golden globe”, recognized as one of the leading comedy actresses of the 1930s Claudette Colbert (Claudette Colbert), née Emilia, was born on September 13, 1903 in the French town of Saint-Mande, the region of Ile-de-France.
Colbert spent his childhood in New York, where her parents emigrated when Claudette was only three years old. In school years, she suffered from a speech defect and was very worried about it, however, thanks to her English teacher, she coped with this trouble quite quickly. For a long time dreaming about the stage, in the twenties Colbert became a Broadway artist, then tried her hand at silent cinema and eventually began to appear in sound pictures.
World popularity came to the actress in the early thirties, when the screens came out pictures.
"The lady is lying" (1929), Honor Between Lovers (1931), Sign of the Cross (1932), Cleopatra (1934). Since 1934, Colbert changed her image and role: she became blonde, played the role of model wives and housewives and eventually became one of the highest paid actresses in America. Her most prominent role is the work of spoiled heiress Ellie Andrews in Frank Capra’s sparkling comedy It Happened One Night (1935), for which she won an Oscar.
During her life, the famous actress was nominated twice for the Academy Award: for her dramatic roles in the films Private Worlds (1936) and Since You Left (1945). In the late 1950s, her career declined. Claudette last appeared on the big screen in Parrish. That was 1961. She spent the last years of her life at her summer home in Barbados, where she died in 1996 after several strokes. Colbert was 92 years old.
For her contribution to cinema, Claudette Colbert was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and in 1999 was included in the list of 100 greatest movie stars at number 12.
