When Ward was sixteen, she received an offer from a modeling agency to try herself as an actress and play a small role in the television series Swan Crossroads. After filming in the series, Susan began to study acting. In parallel with her studies, she went to various castings, and soon she was offered a role in an episode of the television series All My Children. For a year, the studio looked at Susan, and then she was signed to participate in the project as the main actress.
In the winter of 1996, the TV mogul Aaron Spelling offered Ward a small role in the television series Malibu Coast, but due to low ratings, the project was closed after eight episodes.
