Mary McDonnell was born on April 28, 1952 in Wilkes-Barr, Pennsylvania, USA. Graduated from New York State University. She began her acting career in the New York theater, making her debut in Sam Sheppard’s Buried Child. For almost 20 years, McDonnell played in various theaters on the East Coast, occasionally starring in minor roles in movies (debuting in Matewan in 1987) and on television, until she caught the attention of the public and critics in 1990 with her role in Kevin Costner’s film Dancing
