Nicholas Baum travels through Holland, Spain and Portugal in search of clues to the mystically fascinating paintings of the forerunner of Surrealism, the medieval artist Hieronymus Bosch (circa 1450-1516). His contemporaries accused him of heresy, alchemy, witchcraft and the use of hallucinogens, causing hellish visions. The world of Bosch is still mysterious and full of secrets. Bosch is a 15th-century Dutch painter whose real name is Hieronymus Van Aken. This name has always been surrounded by a halo of mystery and mystery, too little reliable data about the life of the artist, too unusual and peculiar his work. For today’s viewer, the perception of Bosch’s paintings is complicated by ignorance of medieval symbolism. The combination of things and objects, which seem ridiculous or accidental to us, for the contemporaries of the master had a very specific meaning. For the sake of revealing the inner meaning of what is happening, Bosch resorts to the language of allegory. None of his works have been dated. The world of this artist is such that Bosch’s works continue to delight ordinary visitors to museums who simply love art. close
