The couch at Andy Warhol's Factory was as famous in its own right as any of his Superstars. In Couch, visitors to the Factory were invited to "perform" on camera, seated on the old couch. Their many acts-both lascivious and mundane-are documented in a film that has come to be regarded as one of the most notorious of Warhol's early works. Across the course of the film we encounter such figures as poets Allen Ginsberg and Gregory Corso, the writer Jack Kerouac, and perennial New York figure Taylor Mead. close

Filmmaker and artist Jack Smith described his own film as a “comedy set in a haunted movie studio.” Flaming Creatures begins humorously enough with several men and women, mostly of indeterminate gender, vamping it up in front of the camera and participating in a mock advertisement for an indelible, heart-shaped brand of lipstick. However, things take a dark, nightmarish turn when a transvestite chases, catches and begins molesting a woman. Soon, all of the titular “creatures” participate in a (mostly clothed) orgy that causes a massive earthquake. After the creatures are killed in the resulting chaos, a vampire dressed like an old Hollywood starlet rises from her coffin to resurrect the dead. All ends happily enough when the now undead creatures dance with each other, even though another orgy and earthquake loom over the end title card. close
The young Chinese Liu Jiaying (Liu Jiaying) showed in her new film “Bowfish skin 2” the whole time-consuming process of cooking Chinese dumplings at home more
The young Chinese Liu Jiaying (Liu Jiaying) showed in her new film “Bowfish skin 2” the whole time-consuming process of cooking Chinese dumplings at home – from buying flour, mixing dough, cutting meat and onions until their subsequent absorption by the whole family. As in the previous film, Oxhide, recognized as one of the best Chinese films of the past decade, Liu again shoots himself and his parents in their own apartment. Unlike the prequel, however, no oxen skin in this film is not observed, but Liu explained that all the films about her family will be called “Box skin”. The whole film is captured with a static camera that changes its position periodically, but always focuses on the kitchen table. Each installation gluing is perceived as an explosion of "action". And if you want to leave the hall immediately for the first five minutes, the remaining two hours will not come off the screen. close

Daily life in an impossibly cramped Beijing apartment takes on epic proportions in this, intimate portrait, with unprecedented access, of a working-class Chinese family. Boldly transforming documentary into fiction, Liu Jiayin cast her parents and herself as fictionalized versions of themselves. Her father, Liu Zaiping, sells leather bags but is slowly going bankrupt. He argues with his wife, Jia Huifen, and his daughter over methods to boost business in the shop. A cloud of anxiety follows them into sleepless nights shared in the same bed. But through the thousand daily travails of city life, a genuine and deeply moving picture of Chinese familial solidarity emerges from the screen. close

The Soviet Russia of old is an immobile head without a body that appears in various locations, clashing with the morals and sentiments of a modern rich man. This man seeks advise from the head but finds that it is annoyingly unresponsive or unhelpful as it sends him on various missions and tests. At times he uses violence or oral rape to get what he wants until he grows too exasperated. Most of the movie consists of improvised dialogue or rants, and meandering scenes in a weapons shop, a railway, and a meeting where the man performs a bizarre magic performance with chickens, eggs and a cardboard box.. close

Morrissey and Warhol's commercial take on the Swedish film I, A Woman.
