Dmitry Trofimovich Shepilov was an intelligent and educated man, a talented scientist and military man who passed the entire war and rose to the rank of major-general. At the end of the war, close to Stalin, he worked as editor-in-chief of the newspaper "Pravda", entered the Central Committee of the party, became a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences, later - Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Being already an associate of Khrushchev, he took part in the attempt of Molotov, Malenkov, Kaganovich and others to remove Khrushchev, criticizing him for establishing his own “cult of personality”. Shepilov’s surname was named among the members of the “factional anti-party group” that opposed the “Leninist course.” The statement about the “rebellion” ended “... and Shepilov joined them.” This phrase later became almost winged, turning into a kind of cliché, from which Shepilov could not get rid of.

It was written by Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes creators Matthew Graham and Ashley Pharoah. It was produced by Michele Buck and Damien Timmer of Mammoth Screen Ltd and co-produced with Monastic Productions. Archaeologist and Bristol University academic Mark Horton acted as the series' archaeological consultant. Adrian Lester has described the programme as "CSI meets Indiana Jones [...] There's an element of the crime procedural show, there's science, conspiracy theories – and there's a big underlying mystery that goes through the whole six-episode series."
Much of the series was filmed in the City of Bath, Somerset, with locations including the University of Bath campus. Additional locations included Brean Down Fort and Kings Weston House, Chavenage House for episodes 5 & 6 and Sheldon Manor.

Their mission was a fast daylight raid to kidnap lead terrorist Mohammed Farrah Aidid, who had been killing U.N. workers delivering food to starving Somalis. Aidid’s goal was to control the country by controlling all the food. The mission abruptly changed to a rescue operation. Surrounded by Somali militia, a fierce firefight ensued that left American troops trapped and fighting for their lives. The ordeal left 18 American men dead, 70 wounded, with 3,000 Somalis casualties.
