The film tells the story of Sakamoto Ryoma, a real historical character. He hated the shogunate, but wanted to defeat it without blood; a samurai and a great warrior, eager to adopt European achievements; a man interested only in ideas, not personal gain. A bourgeois revolution and civil war were brewing in Japan, threatening to flood the whole country with blood. Sakamoto Ryoma saw the possibility of solving the existing problems in uniting the forces of the opponents of the shogunate, primarily the southwestern principalities of Satsuma and Choshū. This was an almost impossible task, as there had long been enmity between these clans. In the possibility of such an alliance, no one believed, but Ryoma still managed to find a compromise, and in January 1866 to achieve the formation of a military alliance Satsuma-Chōshū. It was this alliance that played a decisive role in the overthrow of the shogunate. close

Once Farina manages to climb aboard himself, the kids attempt to stop the runaway locomotive, but have no luck until the engine crashes into a grocery truck. As it turns out, however, the entire incident is revealed to be a dream Farina had as Joe and Chubby's father lectured the kids about rail-yard safety. close

Ukrainian agitprop film from 1929 that was banned and long forgotten until its rediscovery in the 1970s, imaginatively shot by the gifted cameraman Oleksii Pankratiev, whose panoramic long shots feature dynamic compositions. The background, barren field and bare sky, raise the agricultural subject matter to the level of an epic poem. Using innovative editing, Shpykovskyi transformed an incredibly simple plot into an avant-garde work. Created the same year as Earth (Zemlya), the film forms a paradoxically conceptual, ideological, and aesthetic pair with Dovzhenko’s movie. close

A day at the carnival — sensational tent shows where miracles can be seen for the price of admission, boisterous noise of crowds and barkers, shrill and gaudy circus music, the violence of the street ten-fold. This is the substance of Everything Turns, Richter’s first sound film. At its premier at Baden-Baden Richter got into a fight with two Nazi officials who disliked the film's ‘modernism.’ Yet in 1936 it was awarded first prize for artistic merit by the Nazis, with Richter’s name suppressed from the credits. He had long since left Germany. close

A poetic documentary tribute to the famous Eiffel tower, built for the 1889 World Fair and intended to have been destroyed 20 years later. A vocal subset of Parisians (among which, one may surmise, Clair would've been counted) insisted the Tower remain above the River Seine, a continued display of French engineering excellence. Clair makes strategic use of double exposures and dissolves, capturing the mechanical exuberance of the Tower; The great swooping steel latticework edifice a bounding symbol of the modern age. close
