Leon Shamroy is from New York City, where he was born on July 16, 1901. He studied at Cooper Union University (1918), City College of New York (1919-1920) and Columbia University (where he studied mechanical engineering). Following in the mainstream of the family business, young Leon after school often worked in one of the offices of his uncle as a junior draftsman, but still decided to connect his life with cinema, starting to work as an operator at the age of twenty.
