Tatie Danielle is a black comedy about a widow who is intent on ruining the lives of her great-nephew and his wife. Tsilla Chelton plays the title character, who mourns the death of her husband by tormenting everyone she meets. Eventually, she moves in with her nephew and his vain wife. Soon, her family is at war with Tatie, and takes off for Greece, leaving her in the care of Sandrine (Isabelle Nanty), an au pair who is as equally bitter as Tatie herself. The co-founder of the Gamma press agency, Raymond Depardon, created this documentary of press photographers in Paris and their subjects by following the photographers around for one month, in October, 1980. In-between long hours waiting for a celebrity to emerge from a restaurant or a hotel, boredom immediately switches to fast action as the cameras click and roll when the person appears. The reaction to the gaggle of photographers is as varied as the people they often literally chase all around town. While some of the celebrities, such as Jacques Chirac who was mayor of Paris at the time, are perceived as comical caricatures, others are shown simply going about ordinary pursuits - including Catherine Deneuve, Gene Kelly, and Jean-Luc Godard. close

"In Chile, when the sun rises, it had to climb hills, walls and tops before reaching the last stone of the Cordillera. In my country, the Cordillera is everywhere. But for the Chilean citizens, it is an unknown territory. After going North for Nostalgia for the Light and South for The Pearl Button, I now feel ready to shoot this immense spine to explore its mysteries, powerful revelations of Chile’s past and present history." A musical short film about the extermination of Roma by the Nazis during World War II. One of the first directorial works of Tony Gatlif and the first in which he addresses directly to gypsy themes. In fact, all those elements from which Gatlif will build his famous films in the future are already presented here: ethnographic documentary, fantastic musical “pressure”, attention to the dark pages of history (the Roma will be remembered in Swing as well), the fate and inner strength of a person; a fierce speech against social injustice.
Perhaps that is why the plot of the tape is extremely simple, even schematic. Roma are sitting in a concentration camp, behind barbed wire and trying to use flamenco – “song and dance” – to express their protest, to ignite themselves to fight. These expressive musical numbers, performed in the French-Spanish "narrhechia", however, are wordless. The first number is actually a protest. The second is the laconic statement “I am a gypsy.” The third song is based on the phrase “Run the gypsies, live the gypsies”. Thus, the nomadic image of gypsy life acquires the maximum weight from Gatlif, as the only possible form of existence, and “flight” becomes a life victory. Although, of course, it can be viewed melancholy as a defeat, a lack of strength to fight.
I don’t think the German overseers need translation either. These are monosyllabic orders. Their execution is clearly illustrated by the director. In addition, they are on the "heard" of anyone who has seen at least one picture of the horrors of World War II. close
