An amazing woman, a creative person, endowed with multifaceted talent, Leonia Juliana Kuremen was born on June 16, 1928 in Belgium, Charbejek. As a child, the future Annie Cordy was addicted to music and singing, took part in various competitions, where she often took first places. Already at the age of 16, Leoni received a prestigious award - Grand Prix de la Chanson.
When Leonie turned 18, she performed in the capital's revue. There, her talent was noted by the head of the famous Parisian cabaret Lido. After some time, Leonia became a member of the cabaret, but under the name Annie Cordy. However, only cabaret life of the girl was not limited. She sang well in ABC and Moulin Rouge, tried herself in the operetta, as a result of which the play with her participation ran for three years. However, Annie Cordy could not afford to stop there. She was drawn to more. Therefore, Annie began to record solo records, and later her debut in cinema took place.
Her first film was Si Versailles m'était conté in 1953. At the same time, Cordy went on tour in North Africa and North America. In 1954, Annie performed in the Olympia Hall in front of American singer Eddie Constantine. A year later, she is the main star of the evening, and she applauds the whole “Olympia”.
Filming Annie Cordy in the movies does not stop. She successfully combines her film career with singing and performing on the operetta stage. It's amazing where Annie comes from. One of the most interesting productions is Annie Cordy en deux actes et 32 tableaux, which was created on the recommendations of Maurice Chevalier. The program presented various songs, for each of which the scenery, costumes and choreography changed.
The cinema showed us a different Annie Cordy. In her role there are comedic and dramatic roles. Particularly noteworthy are Le passager de la pluie René Clément and Le Chat Pierre Granier-Deferret. The last partners on the set were Jean Gabin and Simone Signoret.
Career Annie Cordy confirms her liveliness and hard work. A bright moment is considered the participation of the singer in Hello Dolly – the French version of the musical. The production was so popular that it took place not only in Paris, but also abroad. Thanks to this, Annie Cordy received the Triomphe de la Comédie Musicale.
The 70s were no less successful and intense. In 1974, the single La Bonne du curé was released, which became so popular that its sales in France were in the millions. In 1976, Annie Cordy again conquered the Olympia Hall, when she gave a series of anniversary evenings. In 1979, for 4 months the singer sang. And no one would have believed that from May to September, in the dead season, the Olympia was filled to capacity. Many believed that such concerts were Annie’s farewell to the audience, but they were wrong.
In the 80s, Annie Cordy continues to perform a lot, actively acts in films, goes on tour, plays on the stage of the theater and releases new albums. In the '90s, her activities subsided, although compilations were still being released, such as compilations of Annie Cordy's best songs. When Annie turned 70, she again gave a concert in the famous “Olympia”, where she had not sung for 13 years.
It is hard to imagine, but in the arsenal of Annie Cordi more than 500 songs, 400 concerts in all corners of the globe, many operettas, television and film roles.
