After graduating from the Academy of Dramatic Art, Sergio began working closely in the theater, and success came to him after the first production. He persistently studied the subtleties of dramatic art and later applied his knowledge in cinema. He began to be invited to various theaters in Italy, theater critics predicted a bright future. Indeed, for a long time Sergio worked exclusively in the theater, equally brilliantly playing in the plays of the classical repertoire and in the plays of the traditional Italian comedy del arte. But over time, the movie attracted him more. He felt that he could achieve more significant results in cinema.
In 1983, Castellitto made his film debut in the anti-war drama General of the Dead Army, where Marcello Mastroianni himself became his partner. Castellitto had the opportunity to work with Ettore Skola, Luc Besson, Marco Ferreri, Mario Monicelli and other masters of European cinema. Viewers were delighted with his roles in biopics shot for television.
