This experiment was a “prestige advertisement” for Shell Motor Oil. As conventional animation became dominated by Walt Disney, many European filmmakers turned to puppets as an alternative, and Lye enlisted the help of avant-garde friends such as Humphrey Jennings and John Banting to make the amusing puppets. Exploring the still-complex color process, which involved the combination of three separate images, Lye creates such a vivid storm scene that reviewers hailed it as “proof that the color film has entered a new stage.” The music is Holst’s The Planets. - Harvard Film Archive close

1794. France during the reign of Robespierre's terror. Robespierre is incredibly angry that some English “aristocratic” is helping many of the French aristocracy escape the guillotine. Moreover, in England, Sir Percy is considered an arrogant and stupid veil, albeit an incredible dash. But in France it became known that behind this mask hides the enemy of the French revolution, nicknamed the "Scarlet Primary" - the leader of a group of Englishmen who swore to help the innocent victims of the Robespierre regime. And Robespierre threatens his prime minister, Chavelien, that instead of the rebel's head, the guillotine will test Chavelien's neck. The trouble is that Sir Percy gave his word to his wife, who found herself in the position that, for at least a year, he would not set foot on the soil of France so as not to worry his beloved. How do you get it in England? Saving his head, Chavellin comes up with a cunning plan: with the help of a famous actress, he sets a trap and kidnaps the wife of Sir Percy, a French aristocrat who escaped the guillotine, freed by Sir Percy and who married her. close

A gripping tale of WWII naval warfare in the Baltics, starring John Mills as Lt. Freddie Taylor, a British submarine Captain. The crew of the Sea Tiger are summoned from leave on shore with their families, and sent on a secret mission to intercept the Nazi battleship Brandenburg. In the ensuing battle the British submarine is damaged by a German destroyer. The submarine is leaking fuel so badly that the crew won't be able to make it back to Britain before running out somewhere along the Danish coast. When it seems that their only option may be to blow up the submarine and try to escape to Denmark, seaman James Hobson (Eric Portman) hatches a plan...Working from a well constructed script, Anthony Asquith adds a strong sense of dramatic tension to the interactions between the men in the dangerous, claustraphobic atmosphere of the cramped submarine.
